ibe98765
Very interesting! Museum culls TV ads from 52 years of the selling of the presidents Exhibit serves up half-century of political TV ads - George Raine, Chronicle Staff WriterThursday, August 5, 2004 There's a bit of lost innocence in Gov. Adlai Stevenson's words of 52 years ago as he embarked upon the first presidential contest in which television campaign commercials bombarded living rooms: "I think the American people will be shocked by such contempt for their intelligence,'' the Democratic governor from Illinois said of the nascent form of advertising in 1952 as he engaged Republican Gen. Dwight Eisenhower. "This isn't Ivory soap versus Palmolive.'' True, but the train has left the station. Most of us have weathered the image-preening and character-assassination ads that tumble across our TV screens during the almost continual political campaigns. But in a proper context, some viewers may appreciate their historic and cultural value. That is the intent of an exhibit created by the American Museum of the Moving Image, which has assembled on its Web site more than 250 television presidential campaign commercials from 1952 to this year's contest. It's at http://www.movingimage.us and is titled "The Living Room Candidate.'' It includes streaming video, analysis, election results, a searchable database and a few laughs along the way.
