Windows Update Won't Install

Hi, everybody. I'm running WindowsXP Pro and keep getting prompted that I have a new update to install. It's always the same "February 13, 2002 (MSXML 3.0)" security update. I've tried installing it several times and it keeps reappearing. I read Scot's newletter this week that mentioned the problem and looked at the Windows Update troubleshooting page. There are two mentions of a February 13, 2002 update problems, however one is for MSXML 2.5 and the other is MSXML 4.0. I didn't see any mention of MSXML 3.0.Does anyone have any info on correcting this problem? Has anyone getting the 3.0 notification tried the reg hack for the 2.5?Thanks for your help.Bob

HI, Scot.Yes, as I said, I read your newsletter and went to the Microsoft troubleshooting page. There is no mention there of MSXML 3.0 - only 2.5 and 4.0. That's why I'm looking for additional help.Bob

What happens when you try to install? Does the progress bar appear and go across? Do any error messages appear? The more info you can provide as to what you see will provide a better answer.

Hi. No error messages. It appears to install just like the other updates and prompts me to reboot. I reboot and in a couple of days (I haven't paid attention to how long) I get another message saying there is an update ready to be installed. When I click on details, it's the same update again. The only version number I'm aware of is the MSXML 3.0.Thanks for you help.Bob

Hi Bob I am wondering if you have checked to see what updates have been previously installed successfully.I am still looking for that other info but I have to go out shortly so it may be a day or two. Also what is the number and description of the update that keeps coming back?

I seen this somewhere and may help or fix it......If, for whatever reason, you don't or can't download the service pack, there is an alternative solution. There is a file you can rename or delete to fix the security hole. Here are the steps:Perform a search for a file on your C drive called "uplddrvinfo.htm".Once you have found the file, delete it or rename it. Doing so will not hinder your ability to use Windows XP.
