Printing with QuarkExpress

At the school news paper, we use all macs (some OS X, some OS 9). We use various versions of QuarkExpress to do the layout. We have a G5, OS X computer that won't print correctly from QuarkExpress (version 6 i believe). When we first tried to print, it was a disaster. The printer went absolutely crazy! It just kept spitting out pages upon pages without stopping. On the top of most pages, there was a line of garbage characters. The only way we could stop the printer was to turn it off. The printer is an HP LaserJet 5100dtn (connected to via the network). I did some research on hp's site: The did have this problem listed, but it was listed happening in some program other than Quark. However, the gerneral solution stated that the garbage text at the top of the page was caused by the printer getting binary code that it couldn't read, and that the setting in the program should be changed to ASCII.I changed the setting in QuarkExpress to ASCII, and now it doesn't print at all. The printer says "Processing Job" like it's going to print, but then goes to "ready" without actually printing anything. What's really strange is that the other OS X machines will print from QuarkExpress, but this one won't. I've reinstalled the printer driver and added the printer again from the Print Center... or Print Manager.. or... whatever Apple calls it. I've tried to add the printer via both IP and Apple Talk, but still no luck. Word will print, but QuarkExpress will not. Also, the print center is acting a little strangely. There are printers in there that i can't remove  Also, one of the printers listed in there says it's printing, but it's really not, and there's no way to cancel the job or just delete the printer all together.Any ideas? Thanks everyone

First, what version of OS X is running on the G5?Are you an administrator for the system or one with limited abilities? If running Panther, are you using FileVault?Just throwing out an idea... but is what you are trying to print smaller than the memory buffer of the printer? You said you installed the driver... I'm assuming it's the latest::url: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechS...us&swEnvOID=219Are the printers that you can't remove part of your network? I think that's strange. Though you may not be able to remove them because they are part of your network. I don't know. From Quark's Site:

Known Issues - QuarkXPress 6.0Printing ?  Mac OS only: When you check Fit in Print Area (File > Print > Setup tab) and choose an option from the Page Flip pop-up menu (File > Print > Options tab) while using one of the generic PPDs (File > Print > Setup tab> Printer Description pop-up menu) , the content of the layout is clipped upon output. To avoid this problem, choose a PPD that matches your printer.
Known Compatibility Issues - QuarkXPress 6.0 ?  Mac OS only: When you load fonts using Suitcase 10.1.x, QuarkXPress layouts do not print. To resolve this problem, update to Suitcase 10.2.
This is what I would do...- Make sure you have the latest OS Updates- Download and install the latest updates to ALL your production programs- Download and install the latest printer drivers, as well as any other connected hardware that Quark can access- After that's complete verify disk permissionsIf push comes to shove: Remove Quark, and ALL preference files associated with it; ALL of them! Then reinstall, apply any updates, and try setting up the printer.

Ok… Another idea (of sorts). I’m not familiar with Mac networks and printing, but have you tried to make connections via Rendezvous to print? Maybe print via another system that prints ok; if that’s possible. :url:

Thanks for the ideas. Hopefully one of them will do the trick :)

I don't remember off the top of my head. I'll check when i go in to the office later today.
Are you an administrator for the system or one with limited abilities?
I think it runs as a user acount with limited abilities, but i'm pretty sure i have the admin password. If not, i can get someone who does. When/if I need to be admin for a certain task it will tell me right? or bring up a box where i can type the password?
If running Panther, are you using FileVault?
I've never heard of FileVault. I do i check if i'm using it? (Sorry, i'm really new to macs :url: )
Just throwing out an idea... but is what you are trying to print smaller than the memory buffer of the printer?
I don't think so. It's a pretty new printer, and other computers can print the same pages that this one won't print.
You said you installed the driver... I'm assuming it's the latest:
Yup, that's the one :)

The printers they are pointing to is the same printer that i'm trying to print from. So there are multiple entries. Some of them appear to be frozen though. You can't remove them. One even says it's printing, but there are no jobs listed that it's printing, and there's no way to tell it to stop printing. :) :(

What prints isn't really clipped... it doesn't print at all :) And if it does print, it's just one line of garbage text at the top of the page.

I don't think i've ever heard of Suitcase either? How would i know if i'm running this?Hopefully i'll be able to try your ideas when i go into the paper today. Thanks so much for your help Arena!

Make sure that you have permission to do the following. I know that at the labs at my school if you don't ask the "guy in charge" he freaks out!Ok, I'm not sure a limited user account can do this but it's worth a try. This is the location where you can browse to using the Finder to delete the printers without having to use the Print Setup Utility.Computer > (system OS X) HD > Users > The account you use > Library > PrintersIf deleting them (and them emptying the trash) that doesn’t remove them… then you may need to log in as an Admin, and go to:Computer > (system OS X) HD > Library > PrintersAnd delete the printers there as well. So, if you were able to delete ALL the problem printers via the Finder (mentioned above), I would then reinstall the printer driver. Hope that helps.==I doubt that the system is running FileVault, but who knows… FileVault encrypts the home folder for each user, and encrypts and decrypts on the fly. However, it's been noted that it can cause some problems. To see if FileVault is running:System Preferances > Security > See if FileVault is running.

Thanks Arena. I didn't get to try the problem today. It's the last day of press week so everything was really busy. But unfortunately, since it was the last day today, that probably means that i'm not going to be able to get to that computer untill the next press week which is probably a month or two away.I promise i'll remember this thread and try what you suggested next time! Thanks so much! It sounds like exactly what i need.

No problem. By using the Finder you can manually delete the printers; side stepping the Printer Utility. Should help… will be interesting to see how it turns out. :)
