Guest LilBambi Posted August 8, 2008 Share Posted August 8, 2008 OK, here's how this started.Awhile back, a friend created a Vista created DVD of images for his band. I couldn't read it on ANY computer here from Mac OS X Tiger or Leopard, to Win2K, to WinXP, to Linux several distros.Took the disc back to him and it worked in his Vista box. Turned out he had not 'fixated, or closed the session' so only his computer could read it. I showed him how to do that and created and closed another DVD and had no problem reading it.That was about 2 months ago I guess.This week, he did the same thing with his Vista box, created a DVD, closed session/fixated the dsk and sent it along. I couldn't read it anywhere again. I emailed back, "are you sure you closed the session/fixated the disk?" He writes back yep, sure did. He was going to take it to a friend and see if they could read it.Well, I didn't go to Leopard on my Mac Mini to see if it would work there, but I was working on an Intel iMac yesterday and popped it in to see if anything had changed with the way Leopard views files done by Vista since apparently Vista changed something. Sure enough, could see them just fine.Now I am on the latest updates for Tiger and it couldn't read it. huh?!Now before you say maybe my Combo Drive is likely going bad, I can read other CDs and DVDs just fine. As a matter of fact I am watching Pirates of the Carribean (gotta love that spelling ) as we speak while writing this post.So do Vista and Leopard have some sort of pact going on? Sounds like Microsoft and Apple have created a situation where stock CDs/DVDs created through the Pictures area of Vista can't be read by anything but Vista and Leopard. Now I understand why you are puzzled..So am I at this point..I'll have to think about this..I wonder how he burned the pictures..Did he just copy them to a cd instead ofburning them with say nero or some other burning program?jolphilEdit: Can you copy the folder to your Hard drive and then open them? When I was there and did the research we discovered the two types, Live File System (which it seems to default to) and Mastered (supposedly readable by any OS as long as you close the session). So yes, I had told him about choosing Mastered. He said he created it like we did that last one. Maybe he didn't? I don't know, I will have to email him on that. I will email him the link to the KB you found. That way he can read it to be sure he's doing it like we did he first time (Mastered with session closed) so I can read it in Tiger and Win2K.Thanks jolphil, much appreciated. I think we may well know why now. You want to do the opposite of what it says there -- that is, have Windows NOT use LFS when it burns the CD.If you ask me, that's very Microsoft-like -- hiding the option of making your CD compatible with everything else under a small button which looks totally useless.
