Tiger, Leopard and Vista ... Oh, My!

OK, here's how this started.Awhile back, a friend created a Vista created DVD of images for his band. I couldn't read it on ANY computer here from Mac OS X Tiger or Leopard, to Win2K, to WinXP, to Linux several distros.Took the disc back to him and it worked in his Vista box. Turned out he had not 'fixated, or closed the session' so only his computer could read it. I showed him how to do that and created and closed another DVD and had no problem reading it.That was about 2 months ago I guess. This week, he did the same thing with his Vista box, created a DVD, closed session/fixated the dsk and sent it along. I couldn't read it anywhere again. I emailed back, "are you sure you closed the session/fixated the disk?" He writes back yep, sure did. He was going to take it to a friend and see if they could read it.Well, I didn't go to Leopard on my Mac Mini to see if it would work there, but I was working on an Intel iMac yesterday and popped it in to see if anything had changed with the way Leopard views files done by Vista since apparently Vista changed something. Sure enough, could see them just fine. Now I am on the latest updates for Tiger and it couldn't read it. huh?!Now before you say maybe my Combo Drive is likely going bad, I can read other CDs and DVDs just fine. As a matter of fact I am watching Pirates of the Carribean (gotta love that spelling  ) as we speak while writing this post.So do Vista and Leopard have some sort of pact going on? Did they both have a recent update that makes hem the ONLY ones two can read a Vista created image DVD?

It's just funny to me that Tiger can't read it but Leopard can. Sounds like Microsoft and Apple have created a situation where stock CDs/DVDs created through the Pictures area of Vista can't be read by anything but Vista and Leopard.

1. No, but I will try it2. Memorex Lightscribe but even though the guy said it was a DVD, it says Memorex Lightscribe CD-R
First, is it a Slide show of still pictures or a video? Second , do you know what program created it? ie; Studio,WMM, or another..That would be the first thing to find out..Your player may not have the proper codec to show it..jolphil

It's just a disk of pictures created by Vista itself, from a folder in My Pictures. No slide show, just still pictures. They are all jpg files.

OH OK Just a data CD..You say in .jpg? Now I understand why you are puzzled..So am I at this point..I'll have to think about this..I wonder how he burned the pictures..Did he just copy them to a cd instead ofburning them with say nero or some other burning program?jolphilEdit: Can you copy the folder to your Hard drive and then open them? Hi used Vista's Burn CD button, and previously didn't close the session. But I taught him about closing the session which we did with the last CD of .jpg files he sent me and I could read it in Tiger and Win2K. But this time when he closed the session, I can't read it in Tiger or Win2K. Only in Leopard. I am sure folks in Vista could read it as well. Is this some stupid DRM trick, or something else? I don't get it. It's just weird to me.

Edit: Can you copy the folder to your Hard drive and then open them?
Yes, in Leopard I can. I can't even see the disk in Tiger or Win2K. Says something is wrong with the formatting.

Yes, My guess too is that Vista is using a Direct Record rather than ISO9660..He (your friend) could pick up a free copy of CDburnerXP that also works for Vista..I have used it in XP B4 and it works fine..That way his Cd's would be readable by all systems..Fresh out of any new ideas here..jolphilEdit:typoEdit2: Just found out you can use various methods to burn a disk in Vista1 Live File System (most likely Direct record)2 Mastered (Most likely ISO 9660)There is a MS help page for Vista users explaining "how to" here...http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/windows/e...24a5bb1033.mspxLook under which format should I use Edited by jolphil

Thanks! I couldn't remember what the other name was that I told him to use when he burned it. When I was there and did the research we discovered the two types, Live File System (which it seems to default to) and Mastered (supposedly readable by any OS as long as you close the session). So yes, I had told him about choosing Mastered. He said he created it like we did that last one. Maybe he didn't? I don't know, I will have to email him on that. I will email him the link to the KB you found. That way he can read it to be sure he's doing it like we did he first time (Mastered with session closed) so I can read it in Tiger and Win2K.Thanks jolphil, much appreciated. I think we may well know why now. I bet Leopard can read Vista's Life File System recorded discs and Tiger and Win2K can't.I thought it was very interesting about this quote from here:

I found it, here's an article about Live File System: http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/window-on-windows/?p=536 . You want to do the opposite of what it says there -- that is, have Windows NOT use LFS when it burns the CD.If you ask me, that's very Microsoft-like -- hiding the option of making your CD compatible with everything else under a small button which looks totally useless. Eek.
Once you gave me the name of their 'default' Vista only format, I was able to find much on it! I had totally forgotten the name! Thanks!
