Technically, BSD is not Linux, but you can choose Other... for that if you so wish. Currently, I'm multibooting Red Hat 8.0 on a machine that I've set up to test Linux and RAID 1. This is also my play thing to compile from source a complete LAMP server, a.k.a Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP. My daughter's computer multiboots XP, Win98 and Red Hat 9. Guest ComputerBob Posted April 23, 2003 Share Posted April 23, 2003 I haven't settled on one yet. I've tried Mandrake 9.0, Mandrake 9.1, and SuSE 8.1. I have Xandros, Knoppix 8.2 and RedHat 9 ready to try, when I have time, and I have the newest Lycoris on the way when the new release comes out. zox Posted April 23, 2003 Share Posted April 23, 2003 I tried couple of them with couple of versions.My last try was Gentoo and today I am installing Suse 8.2.If I find Suse to my satisfaction, I'll stick with it, if not, I am back with Gentoo.(I voted Suse). The one I have noticed with RH 8 it that the fstab file needs editing for reading the C & D hard drives , having a few problems any suggestions . henderrob Posted April 27, 2003 Share Posted April 27, 2003 I've used Mandrake 8.2 and have now updated to 9.1 and love the new fonts with anti-aliasing (better browser reading). Mandrake sets itself up almost automatically (easier than XP in my opinion). The only complaint was fixed after reading posts about no sound. Uncheck a mute and turn up some settings in aumixer. I have been reviewing and testing over 30 different flavors of Linux for a computer group and a newly formed Lug here in Yuma Arizona. Have purchased several Commercial Distro's as well as downloaded several. I like them all pretty well But am leaning towards A Debian Distro such as Libranet. I have narrowed the field down to Mandrake, Redhat, SuSE, Libranet and Debian. Bought the commercial distro of ELX But found out that it was not really ready for the desktop and not much offered in the way of support as well as available packages to download for it. I got the power desktop and biz desktop version. Felt that it was way overpriced for what I received. I got one of the earlier 2.0 versions felt that they should have given me the 2.0E version and the manual was still 1.0 I would like to really go with Debian but have never been able to get it to run right on any of 5 different computers all fairly new ones. could never get X or Gnome to work. Bought some more books on GNU/Debian in hopes that I can get it up and running right with a GUI. I have the 3.0 and 2.0 as well as 2.47 versions of Debian.
