Guest ThunderRiver Posted May 13, 2003 Share Posted May 13, 2003 As I know that most of you have never experienced the power of Windows Preinstallation Environment, you can check it out hereWell, simply put, it is the best BootCD (well, it is a boot disk that boots the bare OS based on Windows XP kernel on a little CD-ROM). The whole image only takes about less than 150 Mb, and that alone can do everything you could have dreamt off when you troubleshoot your system. Here is the a short list of features that gives you some ideas of what Win PE can actually do.1. It boots off straight off the CD to load the OS, and it is entirely GUI based though initially shows only command prompt window (it even enable your mouse device on start up)2. It is the ultimate replacement for Recovery Console because it lets you executes everything, even programs with GUI! One of the scary scenario with WinPE (which is probably the reason why MS decided now to release it to public) is that you can copy the sam files off the Windows direcotry and crack all the passwords! For those that tried to crack Windows passwords before should know that there is no way you could copy sam files off to another location unless you are in Linux and so on, but WinPE does everything with breeze! Try it yourself3. It comes with Internet Connectivity, so if you are LAN, you will be automatically assigned an IP just like you are running an normal/regular OS.4. Great tool for troubleshoot! Since it comes with Internet connectivity, you can transfer files from your machine to another using FTP clients (FTP clients not included, but you could install WS_FTP and etc)5. It is FREE! The Windows Preinstallation Environment was originally released to OEM manufacturer ONLY, and now you can create it using Bart's PE builder for free of charge! :)6. It is the default setup wizard for the next generation of Windows Longhorn, which takes about 15 min to installFYI, before Bart's PEBuilder, my copy of original Windows PE saved my life (my computer) many many times before. You probably then need Windows 98 to play game?Also, one drawback in Windows PE is that Microsoft made it so that it will reboot automatically after 24 hours. They obviously don't want you to use it as primary OS..although it would be nice to run a BlackBox all the way :)Bart said people need to patch 4 bytes out of "a" file.. Not that it is very difficult, but someone I feel most people don't really do it and leave the job to IT3. nothing more..it just takes time to build.. :)Finally, one of your misconceptions is that it doesn't run explorer.exe It is true that it doesn't because it doesn't have that shell program in the CD..but if lets say your CDrom drive letter is D: and you boot WinPE off D: and your Windows Xp partition is in C:\You can just go to C:\Windows\and type in explorer.exe the shell should show up immediately. It is just that simple. I was able to run Internet Explorer off WinPE, but what's the point? It doesn't really give you the ability to ajust the screen resolution, but you can hack it though. Another thing I often do with WinPE is to hack to registry on the target system. I can just load up the hive, and start hacking. It tells you that you have to slipstream SP1 if you don't have it on your original cd. How do you do this?
