getting to know a lot of folks on here, and there's lots of people here with big computer knowledge. I was wondering what everyone does for a career, if its all in the computer field, or even how many students are on here.since i asked, i'll go first.i work as a tool & die designer, mostly dealing with car parts for Honda, GM and Chrysler, in Ontario, Canada. I work on a sweet P4 1.5gig with 1gig of RAMBUS ram, which is just what i need for SolidWorks 3D and CATIA. I also administer our network on a part-time basis. Its a small, trouble-free network, 12 computers in all, with a Windows 2000 server.

I work as Digital Prepress Specialist in one of the biggest Printing Companies in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. My working environment is bunch of Macs and couple of PC's, running from Win98 to WinXP on PC's and Mac OS8.5 to Jaguar Mac OSX on Mac.Our PC's are of the age and these days we are replacing them.I am also helping with network administration and maintenance, especially since our company is spread in couple of buildings so administrators can't get everywhere all the time. Also Mac knowledge is something they don't understand so basically I am in charge of maintaining our small desktop department ( I am proficient in both Mac and PC and now getting better in Linux too).

I am a 911 Dispatcher/Corrections Officer, not a cop - one that deals with inmates. I do that part-time and I run my own computer services buisness offering a wide range of services. That keeps me busy most of the time

My primary job (the job I was hired for) is a Wyse Terminal Repair Technician... I do component-level repairs on Wyse General Purpose Terminals ("dumb" terminals, or "green screens"). That business is slowed down enough that I've been doing quite a few other things now... I am a certified HP printer repair tech. I also do some PC repair. I've been doing quite a bit more networking stuff lately too... Our company is pretty varied in what we do... It's probably easier to send you to the company website than to try to describe what we sell/provide. Automated Systems, Inc.Our repair department is being axed when we move into our new building (later this summer), so I'm not sure what I'll be doing then (I will have a job though)... History: I was a new car salesperson for 1-1/2 years... Sold Ford, Lincoln, Mercury, Mazda, Jeep, Isuzu, and Saab. I worked at two different dealerships (hence the variety). Business was too stressful and required too many hours... Before that, I was a college student... in computer science... Am hoping to go back and finish my degree soon... will start classes again part-time this fall (probably moving to MIS though). That's about enough for now I guess

I'm the Computer Science Technologist at a community college in Peterborough, Ontario. The position is attached to the Applied Computing and Engineering Sciences program. I have to support the main open computing lab for the computer science area and a host of smaller ones. I'm involved in supporting the curriculum needs of the faculty and helping students using the labs. I'm also the local network admin for the program's servers outside of the IT department. I've got 3 Windows 2000 Servers, a Novell 5.1 server and am building a Red Hat Linux server for the Fall session. Lot's of fun stuff to do! B)

Secondary math teacher, woodshop instructor. Julia, please don't let them make fun of me... B)
Teachers have to stick together! It seems there are quite a few of us tied to education. Here in North Carolina I get to teach an exciting curriculum in an alternative school. :D That means keyboarding, computer applications and basic html. The last four years I taught the Adobe products such as PageMaker, PhotoShop, GoLive, etc. as well as Internet Search Methods in Missouri. Previous experience - Air Force - 13 years. Peachy - how are you on Novell/XP? I would love to figure out a way to get more out of XP than what we are allowed with our current Novell setup. Prelude76 - Good idea for a thread. I had been trying to figure out a lot of the different occupations. Now, can I invite you all to come speak at my career exploratory class? BenHenry - That is some combination -- I guess it makes sure you stay employed?

Started adult life as an auto mechanic - until I realized that I liked working on my own cars, but when you start doing it 9:00 - 6:00, 5 or 6 days a week, it turns into a JOB. Quit that after 15 years and started wrestling the family business from my folks' control! (It took forever because every time I brought up an ownership transfer, my Dad countered with the 1968 Plymouth of my Mom's that I totaled in high school!)I now own/run our family business, a fishing tackle/fishing tackle paint manufacturing company (Dick Nite Spoons, Inc. - hence the screen name of dicknite). We sell in 35 states, Japan, Canada, a bit in Europe, a little in Mexico, and some in Australia. My Avatar is one of the 2 World Record Pink Salmon caught last season on our lures! As the "main guy", I get to deal with wearing all the hats - manufacturing, personnel, administration, accounting, networking, public relations, CRM, advertising, etc...On the side, and for free B), I help all the friends and family that have computer problems - just like all of you do!d|:^)Dick

I'm a high school student....I just got a summer job at the local ISP, but that doesn't start for another 2 months B) Right now, i'm basically free tech support for anyone who needs it. I fool around with computers whenever i get the chance and i hope to one day major in computer sci with a minor in music; but, that's along way off. Who knows what will happen. I drift from forum to forum, read newsletters and all sorts of tech news and just try to stay up to date.I know that's a little lame... but what can i say.

thanx. one thing thats odd, theres such a big variety of careers among this forum's users, yet they all seem to fix computers for others for free :D i've been toying with idea of starting up a computer training / repair part-time business on the side (i also do web design already on the side), but i think all my customers would be ones that would bring me a beer and say they dont need to pay (friends, brothers, parents).. :D about career day, just fly us all to Myrtle Beach, SC, and we'll present our jobs after a week in the sun B)

A possible cure would be to request a full six-pack, and drink them BEFORE fixing the computer! B) Then, when they got the bill from CompUSA for fixing your repair, they would think twice the next time! :D d|:^)Dick

I have spent the last two years running my own import export company in Europe; where I do just about everything needed to run a business. Before that I was an IT consultant in the banking industry. I mangaged large market data projects, building out trading floors, netwroks, data centers, application support, disaster recovery to name a few. I'll be returning back to the US in a month and will start a new project in August back in IT.I used to build systems for all sorts of friends and family and was always fixing something or on the phone with people for hours trying to help. Even though I'm living 6 hours ahead of the EST and over 4k miles away I still get phone calls from people needing help. The biggest mistake I ever made was setting up remote access on several computers. B) So I can empathize with everyone who is known as the computer person within their circle of friends and family. Hey SonicDragon there'snothing lame about it soak it all in and learn. Good luck with your summer job sounds interesting.

I'm a computer support person for a manufacturing plant that's a one division of a larger whole. I am pretty much self-taught on everything, and just seem to be quicker at grasping it that everyone else around me. That first got me transferred from my cost department job to the IT department (I was the person people called BEFORE they called IT, anyhow, so...), and later the I got the position of systems administrator when the former one left. Then, when the reorganized the corporate structure and split our plant out as separate in the structure from another one 15 miles away, I suddenly wound up as IT manager (some manager, I'm the whole freakin' department). I'm still learning as I go, but somehow I am still holding on after 8 months. Nobody's found me out yet. Go figure.Being self-taught, there are probably holes in my knowledge that you could drive a Mack truck through, but I'm applying patches as fast as I can. I know some about HTML and have my own website - and have coded every bit of it in NotePad or a freeware program called NoteTab. I'll put that up in my profile so everyone can go see that I'm a chess geek, too. But, that's next week. Right now, I'm headed home for the weekend. Bye y'all.

Yes, Julia, as a teacher you know how it goes. I have to do some framing and trim all summer so I can afford to be a teacher the other nine months. And now I have to sell coke at night just to get by. ;) (late night cartons and cans route --- cola!) B)

Don't you know schools never have money for fun stuff. Besides then we would have to figure out a way to get you back up to the Outer Banks. Of course the pay and benefits are about the same as fixing a neighbor's computer - a thanks and a pat on the back. ;)

Hey, Havnblast, when we hear the term "locked up", we might not think of computers first"I am a Registered Nurse. I've done the gambit, from hospitals (ER, ICU,etc) to one year of elementary school nursing (in an inner city school) to corporate health promotion and education.I ran my own corporate education business for while (had some notable customers, like Intel, the former DEC, et al), but I missed Nursing.I have a lot of psychiatric background, as well as management . (I have an MBA, and did that gig for awhile, but I missed Nursing). When I moved from AZ to WI last May, I left the Maricopa County Correctional Health Services, which provides health care to the +/- 8,000 incarcerated folks in MC County. I was there for 6 1/2 years. I had worked part-time in the AZ prison system for about 1 1/2 yrs before that.I worked in mental health here in WI for about 11 months, and then a corrections job opened up. I am going through culture shock as I am acclimating myself as a Jail RN in the LaCrosse County Jails (daily population 200+). Yo usar mi espanol poquito aqui. Different, different, different, yet somehow, the same.Besides, who on Earth has more job security that a nurse (growth industry) working in corrections (mega growth industry).Book um, Denno!(Actually, I think that we are fools to spend the kind of money that we do to incarcerate some of the people that we do...penny wise and pound foolish).
