Hi Liz, Suspend to disk and ram are methods to save power. " When a suspend to disk feature is activated, it writes the memory contents into a special partition, marks the partition as active, and shuts off the machine. To resume, the memory is restored, then the system boots from the special partition, and makes the OS partition active again."from-http://bugclub.org/beginners/laptops/Suspend2Disk.html "Suspend-to-RAM (STR) occurs when a system enters a low-power state. Information on system configuration, open applications, and active files is stored in main memory (RAM ), while most of the system's other components are turned off. A system in STR can use as little as 5 watts of power, with most of it going to main memory for data maintenance."from-http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/S/Suspend_to_RAM.htmlProblems often occur when resuming from these states.I don't have any use for these power saving schemes so I don't care if they work or noton any OS I might use. I usually disable them.I use my laptop hooked up to A/C almost all the time so I shut off all power saving stuff. Edited by Frank Golden

Kernel: how do I find out what kernel I'm running?
Hi Liz . . . the command Adam posted "uname -r" will show you what kernel you are running :) . . . that way you can complete the info in your post. :P B) Bruno

I cleaned up my post and will add those two uname commands to my notes.I never knew linux had the Suspend features. I don't use those features in windows so I surely can do without in linux because I too Frank, am usually connected to AC power.My next question, "how do I disable the suspend features that I won't use?".

What! only two of us run PCLinuxOs on laptops.
Yep . . isn't it sad ?? . . . Maybe we will have to promote PCLos a bit more ? :P B) Bruno

Umm, well I do on an older system but since the model is the only thing I know for sure from that list, it didn't seem like it made much sense for me to post. B)

It's running on my Toshiba Satellite as well. Some of the specs are in my profile. I'll complete the list once I get to work...which is where my laptop is today.

striker, I also have a rinky-dink Toshiba Satellite M55-S1001 laptop in the backroom. I've had a helluva time trying to setup linuxes on it. So I decided it would be a good test for this PCLinuxOS 2007.I don't know how many times I ran "install" but I remembered what my dad used to say, "If you can't use your brain, hump your back."So I tried it one more time and I'm using 2007 on the M55 for this note.The "lspci" and "lpscidrake" outputs don't tell me much so I'll just enter the M55-S1001 and the Toshiba Satellite M35X-S161 (entered previously) as out-of-the-box.albrtijo

albrtijo,I've put them in but would you check and recheck the specs please ? If anything is wrong with those I put up in the post above, comment on that so I can correct it. ;)Here's how you can do that:

$ pcc

It'll ask your root password, then after a few moments the PCLinuxOS Control Center opens; Navigate to the Hardware tab, click it : in the right pane click on 'Look at and configure the hardware'. A new window will open in which you can see the detected hardware in its left pane.Make a couple of notes of the detected hardware.After you had a glance over it just close the open windows except the terminal, you can close that one with

$ exit

and you're back on the desktop.
