In my previous article I’ve tried to investigate the RAM memory requirements for running some of the most common light window managers and desktop environments available in the Linux world. Prompted by a number of readers, I’ve decided to include also the big, well-known memory hogs that grab most of the Linux market, i.e. KDE, Unity and Gnome 3.

Great pair of articles on wm's. A must read for any newcomer to linux. Strangely enough it makes a good companion for this thread,

Nice articles!!

I was going to say I wonder why he did not list Xmonad but then I seen this comment:

you should add xmonad, it is like awesome but a bit more powerful imho.

I’ve tried it, it wouldn’t run. It could be a problem with the package distributed by Ubuntu 12.04, it was complaining about some executable missing. I’ll try again.

We will have to forgive him that ommision as he has done such a sterling job on all the rest of the wm's. Top notch IMHO. B)

Interesting article. I just tried antiX in VBox, the whole distro started in about 50MB memory (OpenBox). Nice.

Still I'll stick with KDE for my main system. It uses a whole 5% of my memory. :o

I like antiX. It is true that most folks do not have to worry about memory usage these days. Unless you are running a Pi. B)
