A pal of mine is building/upgrading a system and tossing some parts my way.

I will be inheriting a Gigabyte GA-890 (AM3) mobo along with an AMD Phenom II X6 1090T CPU complete with water cooling system.

I think I might be able to use this as a base for a new Frankenputer (ericsbane07). Oh, boy! :)

It looks like a good board. The integrated graphics will be fine with AMD's FOSS driver and it supports SATA3 and DDR3. And of course the 1090T is a fine processor - arguably better than the early Bulldozer chips.

The onboard graphics are Radeon. I'm not a fan of Radeon. I'll use my GTS-450 Nvidia card, probably. Once I get it all built and running, it'll definitely be an upgrade from ericsbane06. :)

Oh, and I'm surprised this got posted at all. It was just going round and round in the browser until it 404'd on me. I just closed the tab and forgot about it.

I've had trouble with lagging posts as well lately. I assumed it was my crappy broadband - which BTW has improved now that I have a new deal with Rogers.

What is your friend building? Intel Skylake with DDR4? Maybe you can get his old memory too.

I like AMD a lot better with Linux than I used to - especially the FOSS driver which is streets ahead of Nouveau. Of course Nvidia supports older hardware better with its proprietary driver so you are in good shape either way.

There's a slowdown/bottleneck going on with the board's server the past few days, I think. It's still happening tonight, actually.

Strangely enough, my pal is beefing up his old Phenom Quad Core machine. He took the newer drives, vid card, PSU and other goodies out of this Phenom II X6 machine that was given to him by a friend of his at work. He's happy with his old mobo/cpu, so he's sticking with it and just beefing up a bit.

I'm not going to question his generosity. I could use a bit of an upgrade. My ericsbane06 (built from parts I dug up in the wee hours from the computer graveyard) back in 2013 is showing quite a bit of gray these days.

ericsbane06 (current main system) specs:

Coolermaster Elite 430 case

XFX MDA72P7509 AM2+/AM2 NVIDIA nForce 750a SLI ATX mobo

AMD Phenom II X4 9500 CPU (overclocked)

Ultra U12-40656 Carbon X7 CPU Cooler

8Gig PC6400 DDR2 RAM

Antec 450W PSU

150 Gig WD Raptor 10,000 RPM

150 Gig WD Raptor 10,000 RPM

320 Gig WD Caviar 7200 RPM

Nvidia GeForce GTS450

Generic SATA DVD/RW

It still zips along, but that Gigabyte mobo and 6-core would definitely be a noticeable performance improvement. :)

I have a bin full of computer parts and goodies that I need to start getting listed on eBay tomorrow. I need some cash, so it's Eric's Shop Rummage Sale time.

Well, it took till June, but Santa delivered a Gigabyte GA890FXA-US5 mobo with Coolit Systems ECO-r120 CPU water cooler on an AMD Phenom X6 processor, plus a really spiffy NZXT fan controller device that I probably won't have any use for.

So, I need to get out there some time and see what I can make of this stuff. :)
