zox
Bruno, is it good idea to join Mandrake Club or not? What I mean is which is better, buying Power Pack or joining the club.I know both would be the best but in your experience, what do you think.I like Mandrake distro and would like to support it, therefore I am not sure how to fork my money out and what would be most beneficial for me.I am still Linux newbie and trying to manage in Linux waters as best as I can.Is there difference regarding knowledge level, e.g book and support manuals in Powerpack are better, etc..Would you mind giving me your advice? Thanks. Stryder
Good questions, Zox. I too am wanting to support Mandrake. And would like to know which would be the best way myself. Linux is no longer that "other" OS for me. I am making the slow migration to Linux full time. So I want to help keep it alive.
Guest ThunderRiver
You could, but there is not much point to.Mandrake tech support is known to be very very lousy, kinda about the same support from ZoneAlarm firewall (which is sucky). You might as well end up reading tons of HowTo's and get moving on your own. That's the best you can do.
Bruno
Hi Zox and StryderMy advice would be member of the Mandrake Club. ThunderRiver is right the support is lousy, their forum is dead, but:1) You get 20% off all packs ( that is if you would buy one, see rest of the text )2) You get access to a faster mirror for downloads only for clubmembers3) You get access to all software normaly included in the PowerPack for free ( also the 3rd party stuff you normaly have to pay for )4) Access to ALL the doc´s on-line, so you won´t need the manuals5) And you can vote for packages included in the next edition. ( don´t know if this is a REAL advatage )Conclusion: you won´t need to buy the PowerPack if you got fast internet access ! In the end you support Mandrake more efficient by being a Club Member, because you pay your fee and they only provide you access, no CD´s, no books, nothing that would cost them money . Also for you it is cheaper to be a member then to buy a pack 2x a year ! :DB) Bruno
Stryder
The biggest thing for me is I really like their product and want to support the company (even if it is French). If we want Mandrake to last and continue to improve on this wondeful product they have brought to us, then we need to help fund them and not just suck up the free distros. Because if we don't, there won't be any more free distros.... there won't be any more Mandrake.

henderrob
I joined MandrakeClub to support the Company. I downloaded Mandrake 9.1 and like it lots. I think it's KDE environment is equal to XP's Luna desktop. I like Kmail as an OE replacement and Konqueror as the Internet Explorer replacement. I am new in Linux so the desktop is important for esthetics and daily use. Command lines will come later when I find time to work throught the "Linux Cookbook" by Michael Stutz and the "Linux eTudes" by David Tanciq.I pre-ordered Personal 9.1 because it includes Real Player, Flash, and a couple other commercial apllications that I could download but I never figured out how to install them. Still waiting it's arrival. On the whole, I'd rather pay my pension dollars to open source then the Great Money Pit.

Still waiting it's arrival.henderrob, I´m a bit worried there. I know that the downloaders have their distro 4 weeks before we ClubMembers get their Packs at home. But that you are still waiting for your pre-ordered Personal-Pack to arrive surprises me. My Pre-ordered Power Pack arrived the first of May. Do have a look on the e-mail you got as confirmation of your order, if you can find an email-address starting with ¨bot¨, send them a mail asking them how and what.I know from previous times that sometimes after a few month they suddenly discover that a certain batch was never send. They even wanted to send me a 2nd Pack a few years ago, because they thought I was forgotten, I replied them that I did have the Pack already and they should check the software they use for their ordering system ! Bruno
This is a snip of the Mandrake Club newsletter I recieved today, Dear MandrakeClub member,Since the release of Mandrake Linux 9.1, the MandrakeClub team has beenworking hard to improve the services available to Club members. We're ready to announce that:* More than 70,000 RPMS, representing over 140 GBs of premium Linux software, is now available for immediate download! The applications contained in this huge repository of software packages may be 'automagically' installed onto a Mandrake system either with the Software Manager or with 'urpmi' (for command-line junkies). This just show you the benefits of being a member again. Guest LilBambi
Stryder --Good to see ya.Yes, always great to help support our distros when we can. They have done a great job with their distro, and it gives you some nice perks too
Guest ThunderRiver
I know that these distro makers rely on funding, but Mandrake is a bottomless pit and even its shareholder is stuck with all the money they put inside. I would not want to give them a chance if I was you

Guest ThunderRiver
Hehe yeah true, but then again, whenever you buy a new PC, you are paying Microsoft tax
Stryder
I build mine, so I do not have to pay that either.
Riff
i have been a member for 2 years. i probably do not use linux enough to justify it, but i believe in what the linux world is trying to do. besides the sooner consumers get a real choice for desktop home OS's, the better. competition breeds innovation and consumer friendly practices. as it is right now, it is basically a "take what we give you, like it or not" situation. so yeah, i would recommend becoming a member. if for no other reason than to help insure that there is a real choice. if not right now, then in the future. Guest ThunderRiver
If they serious want to earn some revenue for their development, they might as well go with the policy from SuSE, offering nothing but ftp install and liveCD..that way, they can sell more packages, and people would have to pay them. That's just me, but paying for something that pratically means useless is just not my type.

That's just me, but paying for something that pratically means useless is just not my type.i would not say it is useless. you can download and install tons of commercial software for free. including all of the commercial software that comes with the PowerPack Edition and more. not to mention tons of other free software. already tested and ready for Mandrake. there is also lots of great technical documentation, full access to their online linux and open source classes, etc. i think it is a great deal if you have a broadband connection and can download the free 3 disk install and then just become a member and get all of the perks of buying the PowerPack Edition and then some. hardly useless.
