I found Cinnamon a little over the top. Immediately took a dislike to
'mouse gestures' or whatever nonsense. I guess they were trying to
create a more smart phone screen environment. Anyway, Betty and
I both disliked Cinnamon so I settled on Mate. Clunky, kind of
minimal, but less so than Xfce from what I remember of that one.
I've been using Mate for some years now...
Well, with Xfce, you just RIGHT click on a blank panel spot and choose Panel > Preferences > Item tab... then create your new launcher. Easy-peasy.
I don't know diddly about Cinnamon or Mate these days.
