V.T. Eric Layton
If you like cheesy old sci-fi, Flash Gordon is some fun stuff. My fav of those old B&W sci-fis was "It, the Terror from Beyond Space". Made me mess my nappies when I was wee laddie. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0051786/

How can you kill an alien you picked up on Mars by removing the oxygen from the room? That made no sense at all.

wa4chq
My Netflix disk didn't show up today so I is entertained (laughing) at some of the comments...lol Xf86config.... once I figured this out, future installs got easier. But man it was painful! I can't remember now if I had to do it with 12 but I know I didn't have to do it with 14.1! It's kinda like when I first learned most of my car problems were closed points. A buddy taught me to gap them with a matchbook and all my problems would be solved. Then I bought my first Escort. One day it would not start but I knew what to do....(still puffing cigs at the time) so I got my bic lighter out, popped the distributer cap and and and....couldn't find the points! If you read what I just wrote several time it will all make sense. Slack is where it's at.
securitybreach
Ha, I didn't even know that Archbang was still around till I noticed your sig again and googled it. They had a release this month. https://sourceforge.net/projects/archbang/files/?source=navbar
wa4chq
hey SB....the hard drive on my laptop is partioned with Archbang and Slack 14.1. I was really going gangbusters with AB there for awhile but hardly use anymore.....I haven't kept up with it but glad to here about the new release. I think a fellow named Mr. Green(e)? is behind it. I had fun with it. ....man my spelling tonight....sorry.
securitybreach
Cool. So why not regular Archlinux?
wa4chq
I thought about it. I may one day. It was enough for me to get comfortable with Slack. My first exposure to it was using floppy on a disk stuff....BasicLinux, which was based on Slack 3.5.... Later I got 7 up and running.....It was magical for me since I didn't know what I was doing!! I guess to answer your question, I think it was because Archbang was easy and available as a Live Distro....And the eyecandy, can't forget that....the wm looked cool....just can't remember what it was now! openbox?? lol....don't matter. I ended up changing it to the tiling wm types....on AB I use i3....

V.T. Eric Layton
I know you're not talking about the "rocket fuel" I'm familiar with from my misspent youth. We smoked ours.

V.T. Eric Layton
Well, enough discussion of illicit drugs and alcohol abuse for one day. Sometimes, our free-range thoughts get away from us here at Scot's.
V.T. Eric Layton
Back to the topic of fresh installs of Slackware... You know, I never did install 14.2 on any of my systems when it first came out. I tried to install it on this box when I first built it, but I was having some issues with 14.2. I don't remember what they were right now. There were some things I couldn't do regarding my desktop of something like that. Also, I HATED pulseaudio. So, I wiped the discs and installed 14.1 on this machine. I'm still using that version, but there have been advances in FF, Seamonkey, kernels, and other security upgrades, that make me think I should go ahead and wipe this baby and install 14.2. It'll probably be a while before Pat V. puts out 15. I probably shouldn't wait. Now I just have to find the motivation to do a fresh install. It's time consuming with all my customizations and so on.

Why do you not like pulseaudio? I think it works beautifully with alsa.
sunrat
I hated PA when it first appeared, but got to appreciate its good points eventually. So easy to select the default sound card of which I have 3 on one system. And some of the plugins are quite useful - pulseeffects is great and pulseaudio-equalizer can be used to tailor your tonal preference or enhance crappy speakers a bit. Admittedly I tweak it to use a better quality resampler and 32 bit floating processing.
V.T. Eric Layton
PA just didn't seem to have the richness of sound on my Logitech 5.1 system when I first installed 14.2. Maybe my ears were just clogged up. Plus, I'm old. Old people are like cats; we don't like change. ALSA was working fine for me for years. I didn't like having to deal with PA.
