May is still good for a Spring Migration.

argh! I missed that you mentioned the version number. I would have told you that version 6.1 had a workaround for the USB booting problem. It is also available as a standalone utility if one has the need to boot into FreeDOS (i think it works with a couple of other OS's too). https://www.grc.com/bootable.htm

DVD: Pal vs. Ntsc on a linux box
securitybreach replied to Cluttermagnet's topic in Bruno's All Things Linux
Yes, it has everything to do with DRM. Per the DRM wikipedia entry: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD_region_code#PAL/SECAM_vs._NTSC -
DVD: Pal vs. Ntsc on a linux box
Bookmem replied to Cluttermagnet's topic in Bruno's All Things Linux
Back in the days of CRT monitors, was there a difference between monitors for the U.S. and the rest of the world? The wiki article you linked refers to ANALOG T.V. standards and NOT computer monitor standards. DRM has nothing to do with NTSC or PAL. DRM us more like an encryption key. -
DVD: Pal vs. Ntsc on a linux box
securitybreach replied to Cluttermagnet's topic in Bruno's All Things Linux
I am confused, that is literally the answer to PAL vs NTSC. NTSC was for the US and PAL was for the rest of the world. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NTSC -

Malwarebytes v4.6.13.324 component package 1.0.2319 released. From Malwarebytes 4.6: Features and improvements Minor updates to improve migration to Malwarebytes 5 At this time Malwarebytes 5 is also available directly from our download site. Currently we are doing a slow rollout of Malwarebytes 5 via automatic updates as we are working on improving support for some non-standard licensing use cases before rolling out to a wider audience. Please note that if the Malwarebytes Privacy VPN app is currently installed, the Malwarebytes 5 installer will only install Malwarebytes 4. If you are using both Malwarebytes 4 and Malwarebytes Privacy VPN, and your products are activated with two different subscriptions or license keys, we recommend that you do not install Malwarebytes 5 at this time.

Sad news, our friend Eric has passed
Cluttermagnet replied to securitybreach's topic in Announcements
Thanks! Great compilation. It is comforting to read Eric's work and appreciate how he was a great communicator. I had to laugh at the 4th link- the photo of the mangled computer on the floor. How many folks do you know who blogged about destroying their desktop tower? (I know that feeling, though...) Clutter -
This is what started me on this adventure. Did not realize it was a on-line game or how many hoops I would have to jump through to make it work. Trouble is I can not resist a freebie especially as I have paid for Prime. You just have to get your moneys worth don't you. Claim a free copy of Fallout 76 with Amazon Prime Logged into Amazon got the game, easy peasy. Never read the blurb. Fallout 76 Fired up Heroic and, what !! no game, but other Amazon games are there. Hmmmmmmmmm. Back to Amazon, read the blurb. Darn it I need to sign my life away to Microsoft. Over to here, redeem-a-gift-card-or-code-to-your-microsoft-account Which took me to here, login.microsoftonline.com Which finally got me here, Redeem your code or gift card Whew that was long trail. OK now back to Heroic, what no game !! Stuff this I'll try Lutris, what no game. Hmmmmm. As I have some Amazon games and may get some more in the future. I thought I would use the Amazon Games App through Lutris. Thinking that my Fallout 76 was not a steam game I could not install and run it through steam (I was wrong in this assumption). https://lutris.net/games/amazon-games-app/ Darn it !!! it works but only shows the same Amazon games as Heroic does, no good for me but it may be of use for other folk. What to do ? Lutris has a Fallout 76 install file but it is for steam. Stuff it I'll give it a go. https://lutris.net/games/fallout-76/ Use the plain steam version, the top entry. Whoopee !!! it works. Well it installs and you can start the game. Then it asks you to log in to the Bethesda site. Darn I have no Bethesda account.Drat another hoop to jump through. Over to Bethesda and make an account. Back to Lutris or Steam, both work to launch the game. An Bethesda refuses to log me in. Darn I am sure I gave the right details, manually and painfully, as Copy + Paste does not seem to work. Darn still no log in. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm Seems you have to link your Bethesda account with Steam though the site, https://bethesda.net Then the game will work. So far have only had a few hours in as am still getting used to it and it took a while to choose my character. So hard to decide whether to use lipstick or not, do I look too fat or too thin. When I say the game runs ok, it does, trouble is quitting. Yes I know you should never quit a game, but a fellow has to eat and rest. The ESC key will not do anything and there is once you start the game no way to get to the main menu. Luckily I run Window Maker so I just ALT + One Key and swap work spaces, fire up htop and kill the game. I run my games in a separate work space as I have had similar problems before. It is much easier than CTRL + ALT + F2 to a new tty and killing the game from there. I am running Arch + Window Maker fully updated with a nvidia GTX 1070 proprietary drivers on a 2560x1440 165 Hz monitor, ASRock B650E Taichi mobo, AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D cpu, nvme 1 TB SHPP41-1000GM, with steam on a internal nvme A-Data SX8200PNP. I have gamemode running through systemd. Steam uses Proton experimental. I have the game on full Ultra settings. The games runs smoothly and graphics look very good. Enjoy folks This is a good article to read for new players who prefer single palyer playing. Can you play Fallout 76 single player? And should you?

DVD: Pal vs. Ntsc on a linux box
abarbarian replied to Cluttermagnet's topic in Bruno's All Things Linux
It was an early form of DRM. Meant that if you travelled to the USA or Japan say from the UK then you would not buy the latest blockbuster movie on DVD which in those days were a lot cheaper in the USA as they would not play on your UK player. - Yesterday

DVD: Pal vs. Ntsc on a linux box
securitybreach replied to Cluttermagnet's topic in Bruno's All Things Linux
So back in the day, DVD players/burners were region specific so a PAL DVD would not play in NTSC players/drivers and vice versa. I had to learn this back in the day when I was ripping and burning dvds. -
DVD: Pal vs. Ntsc on a linux box
Bookmem replied to Cluttermagnet's topic in Bruno's All Things Linux
Am I missing something here. PAL and NTSC are analog broadcast formats that have nothing to do with digital DVD formats like MP3 etc. The original recordings may have been PAL or NTSC but when converted to DVDs they would be in a computer format, not an analog TV format. -

DVD: Pal vs. Ntsc on a linux box
abarbarian replied to Cluttermagnet's topic in Bruno's All Things Linux
Yeah me too. All my DVD Players lurking around are on the old big hdd type connection and all my mobos do not even have that connection anymore they only have sata connectors. I know you can get connection converters but I have no need. -

abarbarian replied to Cluttermagnet's topic in Bruno's All Things Linux
Whats the DVD then ? Don't keep us in suspense mate. You used to be able to set your DVD player to play UK or USA discs and change it if needed. Can not remember if it was in Windows or Linux though. -

Stanley definitely looks like he has settled in with his new family. I love his coloring.
-
Well we've had Stanley about 4 weeks now and he seems to be settling in pretty well. I have heard of the 3-3-3 rule for adopting a cat: After 3 days - decompresses, starts eating, drinking and using the litterbox. After 3 weeks - really starting to settle in and show his true personality. After 3 months - owns the place. Stan being a bit older and more experienced, was OK with us after a couple of days. After a week he was eager to explore the whole house and had his favorite spots to take a nap. After a month he seems quite happy to live here and snuggle on the couch or on the bed. He still likes to find a cosy dark spot under a table or our bed for his naps. Every cat is different but we sense his gratitude at getting a home, rather than in a foster situation or a pet supply store waiting for adoption.

That was originally used by legendary comedian Spike Milligan. Actually "I told you I was ill". There's even a documentary tribute: Very likely that will be the funniest thing you see on the internets today! - Last week

I have thousands of movies but only 2 dvds, Scareface and Shawshank Redemption. I probably haven't watched a dvd in 20+ years.
