abarbarian Posted February 6 Posted February 6 HP AMD Ryzen 3 Radeon Vega Laptop 4GB RAM 120GB SSD Windows 10 Ex Demo Clearance Quote Microprocessor AMD Ryzen™ 3 2200U (2.5 GHz base frequency, up to 3.4 GHz burst frequency, 1 MB cache, 2 cores) Memory, standard 4 GB DDR4-2400 SDRAM (1 x 4 GB) Video graphics AMD Radeon™ Vega 3 Graphics Hard drive 120 GB M.2 SSD Display 35.6 cm (14") diagonal HD SVA anti-glare WLED-backlit (1366 x 768) I decide to sell my beloved Tough Book. The dealer I bough tit from in 2018 is still in business and has the above laptop for sale and is open to offers for it. Upgrading the memory would be pretty cheap around £20 for 16 GB. An I have some spare ssd's and even a nvme drive to upgrade the storage. They are asking £99 so I guess an offer of £80 or £85 would be taken by them. I looked at Thinkpads and various other types but they are all £200 ish for a decent'ish one.I want to move on from Dual Core or older Intel and more modern stuff here is too pricey for me. I only want a laptop as a backup and to take on occasional holidays. Question --- is it worth a punt ? Quote
securitybreach Posted February 6 Posted February 6 Enterprise has to dump laptops every three years due to warranty so if you search ebay for "used business class laptops", you will see tons of newer laptops for less than $300. I've bought my last 4 laptops that way. I only figured that out after palletizing hundreds of laptops and thought "what would I do if I had 500 laptops, I would put them on ebay" and sure enough they are all there. HP, Dell, Lenovo, etc. 2 Quote
securitybreach Posted February 6 Posted February 6 Plus being business class, they are much higher spec'd and have lots of accessories/upgrades for them. 1 Quote

You can often find real bargains for them on eBay. But, personally, for my own use, I prefer Lenovo. And I don't like the "ex Demo" bit. They often have screen burn in. With Lenovo laptops there is a caveat. Be careful because the really cheap one are not upgradeable. The RAM and SSD aren't socketed. 2 Quote
raymac46 Posted February 7 Posted February 7 I've got a Broadwell i5 HP with 8 GB of RAM and an SSD that runs pretty well. So they do last OK. 4 GB is a bit skimpy so if you can upgrade the RAM and also the M.2 drive that would be a good idea. I have a Ryzen R5 with 8 GB of RAM (ASUS) that is also pretty good. 2 Quote

I only want the laptop as a backup an occasional use so my budget is £100 t0 £130. I have had a look at the HP Elitebook's and they do seem pretty nice, just too pricey over here. Also looked into the ThinkPads which I do like the look of. I guess I'll have to do some more reading and searching. Good news is someone has put a bid in for the CF-19 and the CF-52 and there are several watchers so I will have some loot to play with. Keeping me fingers crossed that a bidding war ensues Thanks for the input from everyone. Quote
abarbarian Posted February 8 Author Posted February 8 Well after a huge amount of searching on fleabay I have narrowed it down to three contenders at the moment all in my budget of £100'ish. This is of interest as it has a full sized sd card reader and a backlit keyboard and a fingerprint reader. Dell Latitude 5580 15.6" Laptop intel i5-7200 8GB RAM 128GB SSD Windows 11 Pro These two are pretty much the same one is Intel i5-8250U 8th Gen, and the other is a Ryzen 5 2500U. Lenovo Laptop ThinkPad E580 I5 8th Gen 8GB 112GB SSD 1920 x 1080 i5-8250U Lenovo ThinkPad E585 15.6" Laptop RYZEN 5 2500U 16GB 120GB SSD I get the impression that all three dealers are pretty decent and their items will be of good quality. I recon they will be good for surfing and watching videos for a number of years if they hold up. Linux should not be a problem for any of them.Darn it there are so many different models out there with so many different options. I did look at the Thinkpad T460's but even the ones with slightly older cpu's from a decent dealer were £150 and upwards which is out of my price range. 1 Quote
raymac46 Posted February 9 Posted February 9 I think I'd go for the Ryzen 5 as you'll get better video performance for the money. 1 Quote

abarbarian Posted February 9 Author Posted February 9 Well I went with the majority suggestions you all gave, and bid for and won. It should arrive on the doorstep in a few days time. Lenovo ThinkPad E585 15.6" Laptop RYZEN 5 2500U 16GB 120GB SSD I hope it is a winner for me. To fund this expensive purchase I put up for auction on fleabay my CF-52 ToughBook which sold for a mere £ 41 which is half of what I paid for it back in 2018. I though that was disappointing as it had twenty watchers and I though tit would fetch more. More surprising was the battered CF-19 Mk 1 which had no hdd and lots of missing trim as I bought it for spares. That only had two watchers and sold for £ 23. Which I thought was an astonishing amount as you can get Cf-19's with i5 cpu's for around £60 on fleabay. My wheeler dealing is in full swing as I have bids for, 6" Garmin Sat Nav Nook Glowlight Sony E-Reader One Plus 5 phone All of them in a non working condition. Let the bidding wars commence. 1 Quote
securitybreach Posted February 9 Posted February 9 I've only bought via ebay and never did the auction stuff. Quote
