abarbarian Posted November 24 Posted November 24 Don't know if it is a good thing for open source this marrying of Microsoft and Linux/Open Source. On the one hand Linux is getting a substantial boost and exposure to the rest of the world which is a good thing. As the more folk know about Linux/OS and use it the more folk will start to use it. On the other hand Microsoft may just steamroller along taking what they need from Linux/OS, either by offering vast sums of loot to developers to jump aboard the good ship Windows, or tie up Linux/OS in so much legal shenanigans that it can no longer operate, or keep on pushing Microsoft into folks minds as the leader of all new tech advances with Linux/OS only mentioned as a very minor part of advancement. You can be sure of one thing Microsoft are not courting Linux/OS for the benefit of mankind. They are doing it to fill their coffers with loot so they can pay out large dividends too their shareholders. 1 Quote
raymac46 Posted November 24 Posted November 24 I'm sure Microsoft is making money out of their foray into the world of FOSS, but they really had to do so because of the widespread Linux penetration into the server space and virtualization. Remember it wasn't all that long ago when Steve Balmer was calling Linux "a cancer." Red Hat hasn't exactly been a darling of the FOSS community since Microsoft took it over. 1 Quote

I thought IBM bought Red Hat? Quote
raymac46 Posted November 24 Posted November 24 You're right. Microsoft is a partner with RedHat not its owner. 1 Quote

Microsoft is the true cancer in IT. They promised products that were wonderful but gave products that were barely at stage one of testing and did it time after time and the poor old public suffered every time. The amount of lost productivity and time wasted around the world due to Microsoft's greedy business ethics is one of the greatest crimes against humanity ever perpetuated. 1 Quote

Same goes for most big capitalist corporations. 2 Quote
