Linux Mint 21 is now available

Via Martin Brinkmann at Linux Mint 21 is now available.

 

Linux Mint 21 is a long-term support release that will be supported until 2027. Linux Mint 21 remains the base until 2024; expect several point releases with easy to perform upgrades. Development shifts to a new base in 2024, Linux Mint 22, but Linux Mint 21 will continue to be supported until 2027.

The Ubuntu-based Linux distribution comes in the flavors Cinnamon, MATE and Xfce.

I'll likely upgrade in place when possible. I've done this  a couple of times already.

I have now completed a massive in-place upgrade to Linux Mint 21. You can do this using the mint upgrade tool ( a new tool developed by LM staff.) It runs from the command line (sudo mintupgrade.) It is sorta graphical but gives you no indication of what's going on. However you can follow the process in the terminal.

Make sure you have upgraded to the latest version of Mint 20 and updated everything so you get the tool installed.

It took a lot longer than a clean install would, but it did work.  Just had to re-install Synergy and VirtualBox.  I haven't noticed any major changes, but it did cure a couple of nagging little faults I had with 20.3

I have an SSD-HDD fstab setup and scheduler rules that I like and don't want to hose,  plus a lot of data so I just update in place. My VBox appears to have survived the upgrade. One thing that works better for me is thumbnails of photos.

Can I ask a dumb question here?  I put up a copy of Mint 21, which all seems to be fine, except when I try to burn a disk with it I get a message "burn is not enabled here"  (might not be verbatim).  How can I fix this?  I'm guessing the question relates to the 'group' I'm in -- but I'm certain I never saw any question about burning during install.  This worked on Mint 19 and older releases.  Drive is fine.

OK ... here is the exact message from Xfburn .... "Burn mode is not currently implemented"  No further message other than a red circle with a horizontal line through it.  This in response to an invitation to burn a Slax iso disk.

You could also use brasero instead of xfburn.
