The Federal Trade Commission sued to break up Facebook on Wednesday, asking a federal court to force the sell-off of assets such as Instagram and WhatsApp as independent businesses.

“Facebook has maintained its monopoly position by buying up companies that present competitive threats and by imposing restrictive policies that unjustifiably hinder actual or potential rivals that Facebook does not or cannot acquire,” the commission said in the lawsuit filed in federal court in Washington, D.C.

The lawsuit asks the court to order the “divestiture of assets, divestiture or reconstruction of businesses (including, but not limited to, Instagram and/or WhatsApp),” as well as other possible relief the court might want to add.

The announcement is a major step that has been years in the making, with Facebook and several other major U.S. technology companies having grown quickly in the past 10 years with little government oversight.

But the lack of scrutiny has changed recently, with a series of lawsuits that now threaten to rein in the dominance of big American tech firms that have grown to be among the world’s most valuable companies. Attorneys general from 48 states and territories said they were filing their own lawsuit against Facebook, reflecting the broad and bipartisan concern about how much power Facebook and its CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, have accumulated on the internet.....

Good, about time. Facebook and its social mates are a serious danger to civilization. It's pretty hard to avoid the lies and conspiracies that spread from there and divide our society.

The Australian government are also drafting legislation to make FB, Google etc. pay for news content they skim from news agencies.

Looks like Facebook is not the only organisation in the firing line.

Dozens of states file anti-trust lawsuit against Google

DENVER (AP) — Dozens of more states are joining an escalating effort to prove Google has been methodically abusing its power as the internet's main gateway in a way that hurts consumers habitually feeding personal information into its search engine and advertisers pouring billions of dollars into its vast marketing network.

The lawsuit was filed Thursday in federal court in Washington by attorneys general of 35 states as well as the District of Columbia and the territories of Guam and Puerto Rico. It seems likely to be combined with a similar complaint by the the U.S. Department of Justice in late October that is also trying to defuse Google's dominance of online search and digital advertising.

Meanwhile. Amazon are using the covid crisis to try and bump up their profits.

Amazon to tag health records to spot threats in patient populations

When it comes to corralling the next virus with the potential to spring an epidemic, who do you trust more — the federal agency coordinating the delivery of vaccines in the coming weeks or the company shipping that box with the smile logo destined for your doorstep?

Amazon HealthLake is designed to take tagged information in individual patient records and index it for advanced analysis by hospitals and pharmacies, clinical trial sites and health insurers among others. The information would be tagged according to the existing Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources standard that is overseen by the Health Level Seven International nonprofit based in Ann Arbor, Mich.

AWS is allowing entities to apply for free access to a “preview” version of Amazon HealthLake, in advance of general availability that will charge 27 cents for every hour a user spends in a “data store” analyzing information, along with 25 cents monthly for every gigabyte of data stored in the system beyond a free allowance of 10 gigabytes. The company provides projections for two scenarios of hospital use of Amazon HealthLake that could result in annual costs of anywhere from $2,500 to $6,000 using the services

In addition to tracking the progression of diseases, Amazon says the system can be used to determine whether health insurance underwriters are charging the right premiums for the policies they issue.

It is a great idea ain't it folks. 😎

I'd be ok. Pack up my rucksack with the essentials, add on my Tai Chi sword and saber and woodmas axe, carry the canoe to the end of the garden, walk across the field and sail away down the Pembroke river to the Cleddau Eastuary. 😁

But wait, there's more!

ACCC takes Federal Court action against Facebook over Onavo Protect VPN service

Australia's consumer watchdog is taking on social media giant Facebook, accusing the company and two of its subsidiaries of misleading and deceptive conduct relating to a mobile phone app.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) alleges Facebook claimed its app, Onavo Protect, would keep users' data private, but instead used the data commercially.
