Webmail Problem- GoDaddy and MS

Hi, All-

About a week ago I lost access to my main email account on Godaddy. It's my own fault,

really. The past ten years or more I got lazy and started to use webmail exclusively with

several different ISP's. It's been a good while since I last configured an email client, but

it's clear this is where I am now headed. (haven't tried yet)

GoDaddy had their own webmail client for many years. It was OK, quite usable. But

recently they dumped it and went with MS software. When I try to log in, their servers

appear to be loading an online session of Windows Office. When I then try to bring up

Outlook (going strictly by memory, I believe this to be their email client), it takes my ID

and pwd and always returns some error message. I assume what is happening is

the software is looking for active X on my machines? Anyway, they ain't going to find

it because I went all Linux back in 2007. Every one of my many desktops and several

lappies run copies of Linux Mint.

For me, the medium term fix is going to be a return to email clients. Mint has

Thunderbird, which I remember liking. I'm sure it will be all right. Long term, I may be

ready to dump GoDaddy for email, and perhaps eventually for domain registration

as well. I do already have a protonmail account. If I migrate everything there I would

be going from essentially zero (occasional) use, so I would then chip in and join the

protonmail group.

I've also been having some frequent annoyances with my yahoo webmail account,

but that isn't really germane to this discussion. But I do hope to also get my email

client going with yahoo as well.

From what I have described above, does it sound like I have diagnosed the activeX

problem correctly? I suspect I will never be able to do webmail with GoDaddy again,

going forward... Comments?

Thanks, Clutter

P.S. I haven't contacted GoDaddy by phone yet, but am probably going to be

forced to do so, soon. They can give me the new pop server address (or whatever

it is these days). I will need that url for configuring Thunderbird.

I love my T-bird. I've been using it exclusively to access my email accounts for nearly 15 years now.

Unfortunately, you may find, David that unless you have relatively old accounts with Yahoo or Hotmail, etc., you may not be able to access via an email client. I was grandfathered in with Yahoo and Hotmail, but I don't think they offer IMAP or POP3 access any longer for newer accounts. You'll have to check to make sure.

ProtonMail is a great (and secure) option, but ONLY paid version of that service provides the software you'll need to access remotely.

I wish I could advise you on your issues with GoDaddy, but I'm not familiar with their email service.

Anyway, if you can get your T-bird working with your email providers, that would be cool. I have NEVER liked using webmail and have avoided it thus far. I've said this before here, but if T-bird (Mozilla) or IMAP/POP3 access to my accounts ever ceases to be, I would probably sign off from the Internet permanently.

Screenshot says a lot. Thanks, Eric. I definitely am planning on working

with Thunderbird going forward.

I do have one of those older yahoo accounts. Probably ten years or maybe

even more than that. So maybe I have more 'rights'. Have never used other

than the yahoo webmail client, however. So that may still be problematic...

I have free protonmail right now. Had it for a year or two, but little used

so far. That will likely change- and if so, I would definitely step up and

adopt the lowest tier paid plan for starters.

My ISP (Rogers) hosts its email service through Yahoo! and it works fine with Thunderbird. Just be sure to set it up with IMAP. I can do POP3 but it is a bear with Rogers at least.

My Thunderbird recently started refusing to send mail through my Comcast IMAP account; it allows me to receive email without a problem. I think the problem happened after a security update to Thunderbird from OpenSUSE. I know from past experience the problem is almost certainly on Comcast's end, and since I rarely use the account and sent the email from my Comcast account by mistake, I'm not really worried about it.

My copy Of Thunderbird will ONLY send mail using the default SMTP server.

If someone sends me mail on another account, and I click "Reply to", the reply will not go out until I change to the default.

It's been like that for years.

there are a few things that could be in play here. really too many to start playing "which one is it". GoDaddy probably sent you an email about the configuration changes needed.

Another possibility is that the outgoing email port is being blocked by the ISP. so if you are using 25 try 2525.

are you sure that the 'personality' for your non-default email accounts are setup properly for the outgoing email server that you want to use for each one?

As far as I know ... Yes.

I can change the default, at will.

Oooh, I wish! No details at all about configuration. And of course they promised

along the lines of "don't worry, we'll take care of everything". Yeah, right... :w00tx100:

Good suggestion, but are you talking about something that happens when

using an email client? I am extremely rusty on email clients, haven't used

them for some years. Strictly webmail, out of sheer laziness, I guess- plus

the fact that I always had so many desktops running scattered about

the house. It got real annoying configuring clients over and over and over

again...

At this point I have taken no further action. Plan to talk to GoDaddy first

because I need them to give me the pop or imap address or whatever.

I haven't even had a copy of Thunderbird open thus far, to look it over

and try to see how the setup is done.

:sorcerer::fishing:

Clutter hoots and hollers enthusiastically as Thunderbird slurps up 11,831 total

messages (3,937 unread) from GoDaddy's servers. Holy freakin' cow! I had no

idea it was going to be this easy!

Guys, all I did was to open Thunderbird on this old lappie and fill in a few boxes

in the setup that it immediately presented to me. Bam! Tbird next told me

something about MS365 whatever... Anyway, I was given an option to download.

I said "what the heck" and clicked it... and... suddenly counting up all these messages.

1500, 1800, 2000, 3000. It stopped at 3,937 unread, which sounds about right

BTW. Then I noticed the total of 11,831. Wow!

I had my GoDaddy webmail set up with probably two dozen or so folders. And my

Inbox was probably around 25-30 pages- anyway, a lot. Emails going back to

around 2008 that were important enough to me to keep. (I have deleted many,

many over the years) I've saved a few mails from you guys, in fact.

Certain of them I felt were important to preserve.

So it looks like 'problem solved'. I'm left with a big mess to sort through

but it will make a good winter project. I'll pretty much duplicate those

online folders in Thunderbird. That's a lot of work, but also a big load off my

mind, as this was my main working email account for some years now.

And I have regained access to the account. Next thing is to send a test

email and see if I have outgoing or not...

The message could not be sent using Outgoing server (SMTP) smtp.office365.com for an unknown reason. Please verify that your Outgoing server (SMTP) settings are correct and try again.

So this might be what you were getting at, crp. Next I need to figure out how

to change an email port, which I assume would be done inside Thunderbird.

I will poke around in there a little...

I was an email victim in the 90s when we kept all relevant correspondemce on a local server at the plant, with software on local machines. Frequently my Outlook would crash, burn and lock me out of email until the IT tech came by. He would issue some cryptic CLI commands and re-enable it.

I considered email to be completely volatile and saved any attached files I got as quickly as possible on my own PC. I still think of it that way. Never have EVER tried to organize it in any way.

I do run TBird because my wife thinks that is the only way to receive and send email. I have a couple of throwaway accounts which I just look at with a browser. They attempt to organize some of it into folders which I just find annoying,

Considering the amount of spam and unsolicited ads I get in email now, I feel it is far less important today then when it was a communication staple 20 years ago.

I haven't used an email client in decades so I probably don't know what I'm talking about because I've forgotten how to set it up.

That office365 part just doesn't seem correct.

Here is a page I found but no dates given so it might be old info.

https://www.godaddy.com/help/use-imap-settings-to-add-my-email-address-to-an-email-client-4714

Maybe something there will help.

I also saw that T-bird has to be IMAP

Good news- I now have two way emailing with my main GoDaddy account.

One small problem remains- I simply haven't gotten to it just yet. Probably

a Port 25 problem as crp mentioned above. Other than that, I do now

have outgoing emailing by using their online webmail client. But not yet in

Thunderbird. I'm still getting that error message when I try.

The problem with the webmail client sort of resolved itself somewhere

along the way. It turned out that NoScript was being protective and

blocking cross site scripts. Enabled a few of those and the outgoing

email just started to work. So no, apparently it is not at all an 'active x'

problem as I suspected.

The other big mess GoDaddy left me with was, despite their assurances

that everything was going so smoothly, that all of my folders got dumped

into my Inbox. That explains why there were 3,400 plus messages in

there. Most of them are from a single radio hobby group I subscribe to.

It's a busy and active group with sometimes even dozens of posts,

and always at least a few per day. I have spent a few hours slowly

moving them all back into the folder they were in before. I'm still

working on that.

GoDaddy and MS even managed to corrupt the header info on one or

two emails. It took a 2017 email and made it look like it had just been

received recently. Weird. Smooth transition? Hardly!

I will have to look into the pop vs. imap thing. That may be right

as well. Just haven't had the time yet. If I can figure out how to look

under the hood on Thunderbird, I'll try to do those things. I haven't

figured out how to access that yet...

OK, here is what I found-

Office365 (Microsoft) - smtp.office365.com (Default)

Port: 587

User Name: (..............................)

Authentication method: Normal password

Connection Security: STARTTLS

This of course is in my copy of Thunderbird which is not

presently working for Sent emails only. Receiving emails

works great.

I think I do see how I would edit this entry to change the

port, but only after I know what I'm doing.

You have:

Server: smtpout.secureserver.net

Port: 465

Connection Security: SSL/TLS

which I believe was the old server address. I'm pretty sure

if one addresses this server name it automatically redirects

to the smtp.office365.com address. I do know for sure the

old webmail url does indeed redirect to the MA address.

Thanks, Clutter

You'll find that you cannot manually choose a port in T-Bird, David. The port is decided by T-Bird based on the Connection Security setting. If you choose SSL/TLS, as Bookmem has above, then your port will auto-magically change to 465.

That is the current server address for Godaddy email.  I just this week did a fresh install of Thunderbird, put in my Godaddy email address and Thunderbird automatically found that SMTP server.  AND IT WORKS!!

I tried a couple of things, as above. I am still having unsent emails,

though the fail message has changed.

I changed to smtpout.secureserver.net. No go. Previously, I had

also tried editing to use SSL/TLS instead of STARTTLS.

So trying with both these changes in effect, still no go.

Here is the error message I am now getting:

Quote

Sending of the message failed.

The message could not be sent because the connection to Outgoing server (SMTP)

secureserver.net was lost in the middle of the transaction. Try again.

BTW my port did indeed change to 465.

Clutter

P.S. I also saw this same fail message when I still was trying to address

the smtp.office365 server but had changed the Connection Security type.
