More Diverging Technology

Recommended Posts

It's said that the netbook was killed by the emergence of the tablet. Now the tablet (at least the Android variety) appears to be on its way out. Google doesn't make them anymore and in fact, Android P will not be supported on tablets.

I've been looking for a tablet lately to replace an old Nexus 7 2012 edition. The grandkids like playing games on it but it's obsolete and won't run anything higher than Android 4.4 without slowing down completely. Pickings are pretty slim unless you want iPad (I don't) or Amazon Fire (don't want that either.) None of the majors have released a new model this year and the market appears to be going over to the Chinese no-names.

The tablet is being replaced by phablet phones, Chromebooks, 2 in 1s and new faster lighter notebooks. I guess most folks want a keyboard after all. There wasn't anything wrong with the netbook that better hardware wouldn't have cured.

Google doesn't make them any more probably because they didn't sell in large enough numbers. Google is concentrating on Pixel (phone and Chrome OS devices).

Android tablets are still being manufactured

I own an older Asus and a Samsung tablet.

The Asus was updated from KitKat to Lollipop and I doubt there will be any more updates. Since it only has a 7" screen, I don't surf on it. I use it to take pictures, read books and watch movies that are on the micro sd card.

My Samsung was upgraded from Marshmallow to Nougat and again I suspect there will be no more OS updates.

Ironically the OS on the phone remains at Marshmallow and has never been updated. It is a Samsung also and newer than the tablet.

I do surf on the Samsung tablet because it has a 10.1" screen.

With the Amazon Prime Day sale on I got a pretty good deal on a Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8 inch. It isn't a really high-end tablet but it'll be better than the old Nexus 7. The Nexus 7 I updated to Lollipop 5.1.1 and deleted all the stuff except for some child games. My 5 year old granddaughter will enjoy it till it expires.

I have quite a few tablets. I don't care to upgrade, though. Mine are all working fine. Here's a pic of my favorite one with a new stylus...
