OK, I have been hearing everyone talking about Slackware. I have downloaded all 4 disks.I have been using Mandrake for awhile now and think I wil learn alot more about Linux by installing Slackware 10.0. I was just curious if anyone had any comments for a Linux beginner jumping in and installing Slackware. Is there some package manager for Slack or is it all ./make, ./install? Also, I have a 30gig harddrive. What should I sett my partitions at? Any help would be grealty appreciated. Thanx

You only need the first 2 CDs for Slackware Breach . . . . and a partition of 3 to 5 GB formatted Ext3 . . and away you go :D;) BrunoADDITIONAL NOTE: My favorite quote:

We try to avoid the word ¨newbie¨,  it does no justice to the efforts we, also the beginners, put in to learn a new operating system. I think the wish to learn Linux shows a brave attitude and deserves a better qualification.  --Bruno
That means theat I will be editing the subtitle of this thread . . . :) B)

B) . . . . . that quote was posted for the first time the day I was honored with the moderation job on this forum . . ( must have been May 2003 ) . . . and was posted again every time "that" word appeared on the forum . . ( and that has been a lot of times :) );) Bruno

Hey securitybreach, let's have a Linux install party. I downloaded the first two iso on the weekend and have been waiting to do it. Now that you are ready, I think I will fire up VMware and install, too! :)

30 gigs is mucho space for distros! :whistling: As Bruno said, 3-5GB per distro is sufficient. You just have to be comfortable setting up multiple boots. It takes some getting used to if you are not familiar with GRUB or lilo. Anyway, full install in progress.

I'm not so sure how good i feel about a slack ftp install. I would personally just redownload disk one but... Let us know how it goes either way ;)Hopefully you'll enjoy slackware :whistling:

Running Slack 10 now. No fuss, no muss. Now I just have to get used to the system administration processes in Slack; I'm so used to Red Hat/Fedora. :whistling:

What ?? . . . Did you completely wipe your freshly installed and updated Mandrake 10.1 from your system ??You can easily run both Slack and Drake . . . and if you want a 3rd and 4th distro from that 30 GB drive . . . . . ( talk about burning bridges behind you . . LOL )Really: install Drake and during the install make a bunch of partitions using the partition manager that Mandrake has ( the easiest one around ) . . then after that you can just add the other distro's you like and still have a base ( Drake ) to return to if things go wrong :DAlso, you could run Ubuntu from RAM . . . that way you have the CD-RW free to burn the downloads. ( I know that is to late now, but just so you know for next time B) ):D Bruno

Well, now I have my disc partitioned with Mandrake 10.1 official and the other half empty. I have downloaded 3 different copies of Slack 10.0 Disk 2. Everytime it asks for Disk 2 it says something about missing packages. I selected install everything on the installations. Probably something about Slack any my laptop (Inspiron 8100) I ended up installing Ubuntu for a minute. It was fast but was even more point and click than Mandrake. So I am going to find a one disc install Distro since I have only one more disk left. LOL If anyone knows of a way to install Slackware 10 over the net, it would be appreciated. Thanx :medic:Oh yeah I got 16 gigs to play with
