Does this happen when you click the middle button anywhere? Just on links? Just on blank areas of webpages? Just on a tab? Just on a an empty tab area space?

If you type
about:config

in address bar and scroll down resulting page there is a

middlemouse.contentLoadURL

maybe this value was accidentally changed. :w00t:

middlemouse.contentLoadURL is "true" by default. For some crazy reason. With that as true, clicking the middle button will (try to) load whatever text you have in the clipboard as a URL (remember, highlighting in linux will copy text to the clipboard!)This setting is the first thing I change in a new install of Firefox. That way, I can middle click on tabs to close them!
