abarbarian
Ungrateful sod. There is poor old MS sweating cobs to keep you safe an all you do is whine about the bandwith. Tsk tsk.
Temmu
no, not at all, just surprised. windows defender usually updated with that time of the month (2nd tuesday)
Corrine
KB 915597 is the generic Knowledge Base Article for Windows Defender and Microsoft Security Essentials definition updates. The current and last 20 change logs are available here. Windows Defender on Windows Vista and Windows 7 get the anti-spyware, not the anti-virus updates But, Windows Defender updates are most certainly not limited to 2nd Tuesday updates. It is the MSRT (Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool) that is updated on the 2nd Tuesday.
ross549
Yeah, Windows defender, as I remember it, is an anti-malware tool. It gets definition updates regularly.
abarbarian
as I remember it, Yeah it is so easy to forget when you use linux.
Corrine
Yeah, Windows defender, as I remember it, is an anti-malware tool. It gets definition updates regularly. Except for Windows 8 where it is the renamed Microsoft Security Essentials. (See Understanding Microsoft Anti-Malware Software)

I've seen this on my mother's win 7 machine too. Since this is new to me (just took her off XP), I didn't know what to expect so didn't think too much about it. James M. Fisher
Yesterday, I reverted my Lenovo T510 laptop back to Windows 7 (which came installed on it). I had put Windows 8 on it just to see if I could. Anyway, I restored a year-old "Clean" image of Windows 7 SP1, but there was a ton of updates to get up to speed with (not to mention the Lenovo updates)! Strange thing is, I still hear people say that they are unsure if they should agree to all these updates.
abarbarian
Well you do not need all the updates MS sends for 7. The recommended ones are needed, well most of them, but you do not need all the MB's of optional ones. Anyone who says installing Windows is easier than a mainstream linux has no brain or is a fudster.

Guest LilBambi
Windows XP Critical updates and most all if not all Recommended I do install. Optional ones, well I am very picky with those and rarely if ever install those. Every OS sucks as the Three Dead Trolls so aptly stated. Of course, I love all the OSes so for me it is just a comical song that has much truth but I don't let it get me down.

Was not pointing the finger at anything said here. An I quite like Windows, Xp was good for me,7 seems even better. Just that a lot of fudster articles state that windows is so much easier than the penguins to install and set up and run. An yes putting a windows cd in the pc and running through the install is quite easy but that does not give you a "working" pc. You then have to spend a great deal of time and effort doing the updates and finding software and installing it. Which as I found out last month can take nearly a full day when you have a slowish broadband and necessitated more than a few restarts. An I only have a very minimal set of programs installed with this new 7. Compare that to two hours time spent installing Makulu Mate with a full set of programs.Loaded the cd ran the install, hit the update button, job done. If everything's working on Mom's system, I tend to leave well enough alone. I always install critical/important MS updates though.
amenditman
I guess I should boot into my token Windows 7 install and see what all the fuss is about. The only other Windows install in the house is Windows XP for some fun, old games. No updates, anti-virus, or internet connections. zlim
I've had MS get confused more than once. I have four computers running Windows 7. On three of them an update will say optional and on the 4th it says important/recommended. I haven't been able to figure out why and no it has nothing to do with bitedness (32 versis 64) nor Home Premium versus Pro because this happens on different computers. If it was always the same one, I'd be able to figure it out!
Guest LilBambi
Yeah, Microsoft's weirdness in that area can get a bit irritating at times.

James M. Fisher
Or could the rumour be true that MS sends individually tweaked updates to all their Microsoft MVP's to keep up the good name of MS. Yes, we MVPs get the freshest of updates from the MS Update Bakery. Everybody else gets 'day-old' offerings. Edited June 8, 2014 by James M.
