And it is not the only one!

Various forms of Android ransomware have been uncovered in recent months. In May, security experts warned about a strain called Koler, which posed as a porn app. It then sent a message claiming to be from police, telling the user they had broken the law by watching indecent material, demanding they pay a fine of $300.

Also:

New strain of criminal software asks for payment to unlock files on SD cards, but is so far confined to Ukrainian region

I do not think there are any porn apps on google play so the user would have to sideload the app which is dangerous anyway.

I've heard rumblings that a URL in a text message could lead to malware infection on Android. Do I have incorrect information?

That would only work if the user had Unknown Sources checked in the Security settigns, otherwise the file wouldn't be able to do anything.

Unless they found another attack vector, I do not believe it is possible.

This is probably what you are talking about: Worm-like Android malware spreads using text messages

The text message says “Is this your photo?” in Russian and has a link to an Android application package (.APK) file containing a copy of Samsapo.

Same as I mentioned, you have to enable Unknown Sources to install an apk.

Pays to be ignorant sometimes, huh? Look what it did for Steve Ballmer.

Uh... just kidding, Steve (in case he reads here). :)

Glad to hear it! Any OS is vulnerable if you don't set the settings to keep it safe.

Well luckily it is disabled by default and gives a warning when you enable it.
