Guest ThunderRiver
About 10 days ago, while I was still on vacation, I watched a few shows on TechTV, and one of them was The ScreenSavers. That specific episode was very interesting. Leo took some phone calls from people with their computer questions. One of the phone calls was this 18 years guy saying that he does NOT see what's soo bad about spam because he is making $1000 bucks per day just for sending out spams. He said that his whole family was being threatened with furious phone calls, but he doesn't see why it is bad to have spam. He even mentioned his email address as dirty@hotmail.com and welcomed everyone to email him. He said that $1000 is out of tax-payer's pockets.Either that's a prank or facts. I found it quite wrong as these spamers making big money at tax-payer's expense. Not to mention the amount of junk mails that waste bandwidth and memory space. For this quarter, I have noticed 150% increase in spam from my email box. ThunderRiver
Guest LilBambi
It's definite that something needs to be done about spammers ... but what and by whom is always the age old question.Government intervention in anything appears to become accessive and ultimately there will be something they didn't think through and will take away yet another area of liberty like the wording for DMCA and Super-DMCAs that could by their very wording disallow things like fair use, and others things, like firewalls, etc., that are absolutely necessary in this day and age.But as long as Spammers find suckers ... even a small percentage of them, it didn't cost them to send it, so it's all gravy. They, like telemarketers, don't care that they are annoying to anyone, they want to make money. The more they do the more they get. That's where we have to hit them. In the pocketbook. If it is not financially viable to do this, they will stop! But how ....
Guest ThunderRiver
hehe.. first of all, thanks for moving the thread to the right place. I could not think of a place that fit around the time, so watercooler was the place I thought might be a good choice.I do remember awhile back that slashdot.org was targeting this spammer (what's his name?...nah no need to mention). He recently purchased this house, and immediately, all the spam-haters sending a bunch junk mails and tons and tons of pornography to the new residence. Oh this spammer is from Michigan by the way, and he is all pissed off wanting to take legal actions against spam-haters for dumping tons of junk mails at his place.and I imagine he wakes up each day to see many semi/18 wheelers parking next to his place to send in "mails"
Martini Lover
This morning i had 84 pcs of Spam. It is disgusting. You cant even delete them quick enough. I use mailwasher, and it helps, put you still have to look at something. I am ready to give up something, including money not to have to give up my time. This is not what Free Speech is about. jbredmound
I am still perplexed; I shop on the web, I wander about and download tons of stuff, and I get NO spam. I mean, I'm not all that careful, except with washing out spyware and cleaning the registry regularly.I am not being oppositional here. We need to figure this out. Do you folks need a new ISP? We have a spam filter on my ISP, and I have it turned off!So what is the difference? Why do I, who spends a lot of time on the web, often "trolling", get zilch spam, and some other guy has got to put up with 84 pics, etc?I really feel bad for the overwhelmed (really), but I don't get the difference in the experiences.Maybe it is something subtle. I fully agree, though, that this has NOTHING to do with free speech.
teacher
I think it has to do with what server you are using and where you leave your address on the internet. My husband was not careful in checking boxes when ordering airline tickets and he started getting spam until I set up some blocks. I, on the other hand, use a junk email for anything out on the internet and keep my real one private. I have had zero on my private email account and my yahoo puts 90 percent of the junk in bulk mail. I still only get one or two spams a week. Glad to hear I am not the only one fairly spam free.Never liked the other spam either
Martini Lover
One of the problem is I use a Hotmail address as my main email address. I have switched ISPs many times over the years, and have used it, my email address, as the one where anyone who knows me can get to me. Although it is not convient sometimes, because there are places where it is very hard, or even impossible to register with a free email address. My current ISP (cable) provides a account, but is so difficult to use I have to spend time to figure out how to delete a message when I do check it. You have been blest when your account doesn't get spam.

These spammers just don't get it. Just like the telemarketers. And now we hear that some spammers are actually getting mad enough to send trojans to anti-spammers! Amazing. They annoy the heck out of folks by loading their email servers/email boxes, and the Internet's bandwidth in general with their foolishness, and they are lashing out at anti-spammers for defending themselves in the Courts and on the Internet! Boggles the mind!
