Here are my specs:

Motherboard = Asus M4a79 Deluxe

Operating System = Vista 64bit Home Premium

Hard Drives = Raid 0 (Striped for gaming)

I am trying to upgrade to Windows 7 Home Premium. Windows won't upgrade because it says the AMD AHCI Compatoble Raid Controller is out of date. So I let Windows go out and look for a newer driver. Comes back and says I have the latest installed. Won't let me upgrade to Windows 7.

I currently have this version:

3.100.1540.86

I see a newer version:

3.1.1540.151

is out there, but on the Asus website, I can't locate it. There are some sites that have it, but want me to download their download managers to get it. Curious if there is a website that would have the file I need without a download manager installation.

Even if I update the driver, would 7 even install?

Any help is appreciated. I'm not a noob, but no where near an expert.

Thank you for the info. Does it matter what Raid Controller I download? Meaning, downloading an HP controller vs an Asus? I had been specifically looking for a Raid Controller for the M4a79 Deluxe. So an HP controller driver would be fine?

It's up to you. Here's some info about that at ASUS site. The link is a zip file but apparently you can't link to it directly. It does't work but takes you to the place to download it.

This is the actual file name: M4A79-Deluxe-1804.zip

But it seems you have to choose the right one on that page and it's not clear.

I was able to find the right download file. It is on this page:

http://support.amd.c..._windows.aspx#3

Just need to find my motherboard, go down to the "other" link and there it was. I clicked on the AMD Raid Drivers.

Had to download an Asus download program (it automatically prompted me to do so before running Raid Driver download. It's an ATI Catalyst installer program that checks your system and updates all of the necessary files. Program ended up updating 4 files including the Raid Controller.

All is good. Now let's see if Windows 7 upgrade will work.

Thank you for your help!!

What ASUS download did you have to get and where did you need to get that before you could run the ATI Catalyst installer?

Yes, per our PM conversation, it looked right since it said first that you can get it specifically for Vista with a 700 series motherboard chipset. Which sounded right since your ASUS motherboard specs say:

Chipset AMD 790FX/SB750

Great job!

Good luck on your Windows 7 upgrade!

You are very welcome!

The Asus program was a required download and was automatic when I clicked on the AMD Raid Driver link.

Seems the Raid Controller error will show up when you have striped drives. So when upgrading from Vista to Windows 7, need to have the Raid Controller driver for Windows 7 available on a flash drive or CD. Since I had Vista 64bit, I just needed to get the Windows 7 64bit Raid Controller. When upgrading, the Windows 7 upgrade disk does not have a Windows 7 Raid Controller on it.

After running the Compatibility test during the first part of the upgrade, Windows 7 will give you the Compatibility summary which will include the error. At that point, scroll down to the bottom of the page. On the left side, will be the Load Driver button. Click on it and point Windows to what ever device you have the Windows 7 Raid Controller on. After that, smooth sailing.

Thanks again for your help!!
