Patch Tuesday

In case you missed it, in addition to the Microsoft Security Updates today, Adobe had critical updates for Adobe Reader/Acrobat, Adobe Flash Player and Shockwave Player.

I covered everything except Shockwave Player at SecurityGaden, with the direct download links for Flash Player and FTP link for Adobe Reader -- both avoiding the unnecessary pre-checked McAfee scan box..

Thanks Liz. That link takes me to the "install" Shockwave page. I was looking for a way to download the .exe/.msi installer program to my PC and then use that to update the 4 PCs over my LAN.

I doubt you will need it [shockwave] anymore. It was used in the past for websites that offered those silly little games you could play online but almost everything is flash based now. I haven't run across a website that requires shockwave in a long time.

Thanks Corrine! I couldn't find a direct D/L page for Shockwave. Is there such a thing?

Also, Oracle has a Java update: http://www.oracle.co...oads/index.html

No, there isn't a direct d/l page for Shockwave. I agree with Tushman. Shockwave Player has never been installed on this computer and I've never run into anything that required it.

As to the Java update, it didn't include any security updates, which is why I ignored it. I don't have Java installed either. Again, no need for it.

If you are a gamer, you might have it from a leftover era, or for some websites with games.

If you need an update to Shockwave, and IF you actually need it, go here to get it:

http://www.adobe.com...H-GET-SHOCKWAVE

Or if you need another language version, go to Adobe.com and get the link from the bottom right corner of the webpage below the links for Flash and Reader.

If you don't need it, do what Corrine suggested.

If you keep it, it will be on you to keep it updated though. Just like Silverlight, and some others.

I go to the Check Plugins page for Firefox in both Firefox and Chrome (works there too).

Another good one to try is the free OSI (Online Software Inspector) at Secunia.com. NOTE: It does use Java to do it's checks. So keep that updated first!

Yep, all up to date.

I use the downloaded version of Secunia http://secunia.com/products/consumer/psi/

because all but one computer in the house do not have Java installed. (The less I have installed: Java, Silverlight, Shockwave, Adobe Reader, etc. the less patching and updating I need to worry about).

I have Java and Silverlight installed on one computer. I have no shockwave player. I replaced Adobe Reader with Foxit (at almost 14MB) but now am replacing Foxit with Sumatra (at 4.21MB). There is also a portable version of Sumatra, if you don't want to install it.

greets,

warning - keep patched-up (all os & software)

Corrine already posted this information when the bulletin was released. See here:

when did we say flash was going to die?

I doubt that flash will "die" anytime soon. It's far too ubiquitous & popular for that to happen. When & if they come up with a suitable replacement, I'm sure the hackers will find ways to exploit that as well.

C'mon Temmu - did you really think you could beat Corrine to the punch? :bangin:

flash - alive and well and busy doing something on your system. (~i~ did not say, "nefarious.")

har har. :P

didn't html5 take care of that??

Actually, the sooner it dies the better because there was yet ANOTHER Adobe Flash Player Security update today! Adobe Security Advisory: Security update available for Adobe Flash Player

Direct download links are available at the links below without extra add-ons:

Corrine, if it isn't too much trouble could you post the current version number along with the download links? I like to rename the file so as I take it around to various machines on a flashdrive I know which one I'm dealing with. I believe this current version is 11.4.402.265, correct? Thanks.

Frapper, just as an FYI - you can right-click on the installer and get the same information. Many times the software maker will include those kinds of details in the file properties.

Click on the 'Details' tab, after you bring up the file properties window.
