Where has all the sound gone? Long time

I downloaded PClos live. I couldn't get anything done. The soundchk.sh program, when started, would make the terminal screen quickly disappear, and shut down (this didn't happen in Mandrake). A couple of times, it printed out permission denied, can't process "Great". I was running as root. I coudn't find in the text of the script anywere where there was such a word.I couldn't try a DVD movie, since the live PClos cd had to remain in that drive. And the DVD drive is the boot drive.I then proceeded to try a music cd in the other CDROM drive. This was worse than my regular Mandrake, since no sound came out at all! I tried all the available CD applications. NADA!I also made sure that the mixer(s) were all enabled.The aRts server was doing the same thing as in Mandrake, and giving an error message that the CPU is overloaded and that it is shutting down.PClos only found one of my CD (DVD)drives, when it setup. It didn't find the other. I got the other to play by going into the /dev directory, and selecting it there. Of course, there was no sound!And, just like Mandrake, the microphone worked just fine. So the score is 1 out of 4 for PClos. The mike works, the cdrom sound doesn't. The systems sounds don't, and I have to assume that the DVD movie would also end up being mute, if I could have tried it. Just a thought, are the decription decoders present for commercial DVD movies? I thought that I had them in Mandrake, but I don't know if they are functional.So, this is the results thus far, after staying up for two days without any sleep, to try to fix this missing sound problem. :url: :huh:Good night to you all, I'm going to bed! And I don't care is the sun is shining. Right now, as far as I'm concerned, it might as well be midnight.ONEderer

HI OnedererI am slowly beginning to think it is a hardware problem . . . but let us first check a few things:1). Boot the Live CD with the codes that Owyn posted at the “boot:†prompt you see before it starts up.2). The soundchk.sh script you use is that the one that is native on the Live CD ( very strange it crashes ) or the one Owyn did send you ?On the Live CD you should use the native one.3). In PCLos can you change a few settings: Configuration --> KDE Control Center --> Sound --> Sound System, on the second tab ( sound I/O ) change “Sound I/O method†from “Autodetect†to “Advanced Linux Sound Architectureâ€4). The script you use on Mandrake ( the one Owyn did send ) did you by any chance receive it in Windows and maybe open it there before transferring it to Linux ? ( Windows is highly likely to corrupt the script because it places the “end of line†different )5). Could you post the outcome of “dmesgâ€6).If we want to dig deeper in your hardware are you dualbooting Windows on that system ? And could you run Aida32 or Sisoft Sandra ?:lol: Bruno

Here is the update while using PClos.I am currently writing this, using PCLOS. I managed to get all the permissions to work ok, and got the sound test to run. The mixer, all volumes are up and enabled. The mike runs. I understand that with XMMS one doesn't need a cable attached to the back of the player that goes to the sound card. The data is changed to digital and out the data cable.Anyway there still is no sound there, but I'm sure that there would be if the music disk was in the bootable DVD drive (it is now being used by the OS disk). Still no systems sounds, and this time, aRts server did not act up, but doesn't seem to make any contributions either.Below, is the results of the test.I had been up for hours without any sleep, and was making some senseless mistakes from being too tired. Anyway I followed your advice and added the commands as suggested when I started up PSlos, and added the same in Mandrake Lilo. Does is make any difference is I used the GUI to do this as opposed to the way that Bruno suggested? He suggested writing it out, and I used the check mark in the Drak Setup section. So for the time being, I'll let you look at this information, and proceed from there. /sndcheck.sh: line 6: needed: command not found/sndcheck.sh: line 9: much: command not foundsoundchk.sh v1.04 - Running Sound Configuration ChecksIdentifying SystemLinux localhost 2.4.23-2.tmb.2mdk #1 Fri Dec 19 02:01:35 CET 2003 i686 unknown unknown GNU/Linuxmodel name : Intel® Pentium® 4 CPU 3.06GHzcpu MHz : 3049.543MemTotal: 773788 kBSwapTotal: 506008 kBChecking Deviceslr-xr-xr-x 1 root root 13 Jan 25 20:09 admmidi -> sound/admmidilr-xr-xr-x 1 root root 10 Jan 25 20:09 adsp -> sound/adsplr-xr-xr-x 1 root root 11 Jan 25 20:09 amidi -> sound/amidilr-xr-xr-x 1 root root 11 Jan 25 20:09 audio -> sound/audiolr-xr-xr-x 1 root root 12 Jan 25 20:09 dmmidi -> sound/dmmidilr-xr-xr-x 1 root root 9 Jan 25 20:09 dsp -> sound/dsplr-xr-xr-x 1 root root 10 Jan 25 20:09 midi -> sound/midilr-xr-xr-x 1 root root 11 Jan 25 20:09 mixer -> sound/mixerlr-xr-xr-x 1 root root 15 Jan 25 20:09 sequencer -> sound/sequencerlr-xr-xr-x 1 root root 16 Jan 25 20:09 sequencer2 -> sound/sequencer2drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 0 Dec 31 1969 soundChecking Driveragpgart : Intel Corporation|82850 850 (Tehama) Chipset Host Bridge (MCH) [bRIDGE_HOST] (vendor:8086 device:2530 subv:1028 subd:0145)snd-emu10k1 : Creative Labs|[sB Live! Here, below, is a copy of DMESG. The soundchk.sh program was taken from an email that Owyn sent me. I got it using Linux off my Yahoo email service. I kept is there to make sure it would be available elsewhere in case something went wrong on this system. What is Aida32, or Sisoft Sandra? I am not familiar with those applications.And yes it could be a hardware problem, but only related to Linux, since this works fine in Win*. The trick is to find out what. An IRQ problem, or a memory overlap? How about DMA? I don't discount any possibilities. Oh, Owyn, today, the keyboard arrows work fine with the browser.So, here goes. HI guy:Let's recap where we are and move on from there. Make sure we are all on the same wavelength.1)The soundchk report you attached still has some unusual error messages. However, the basic info I need seems to be in the report. I have emailed you another copy of the v1.04 script. I tested the copy I sent you on PCLos before mailing. No error messages as seen on your report.2)You ran the test from PCLos. I can see that from the kernel in the Identifying System section of the test.3)You used either "livecd noapic" or "livecd noapic nolapic" to boot the CD. For my information, which boot options did you select. The option did the job in any case. Your sound card is now on irq 3 instead of irq 18.4)You were having problems with your system starting aRts. This problem is gone.5)You do not have a CD audio cable installed on your system. This cable will be required to play CDDA. WXP supports digital CDDA via IDE. Linux does not.6)Your mixer volumes look fine.7)You are using the expected alsa drivers for your card.8)Do you have access to mp3/ogg etc audio files? If so, please try to play them in XMMS.9)Do you have access to midi files? If so, please try to play them in Kmidi. You will need to make sure the aRts server is running for this test. You may also need to change the default IO mode from "automatic" to "alsa".10)Your card supports sound fonts with Kmid and awesfx. However, getting this working is for later. Need to get basic things working first.11)HT/smp is disabled by default in PCLos. I can see this from the single CPU stats in the Identifying System section of the report.

Sonic>>> PClos using Alsaconfig, found my card with no problem and set it up with no problem.Current problem is that by using a live cd, I cannot try to run a movie DVD or try the sound in that drive. The other CD player will not play music, because it doesn't have a cable in the rear to go to the sound card. I understand that XMMS overcomes this problem but right now, it just hangs up and won't work, after I configured Alsaconfig.I'll have to try this in my regular Mandrake, where my drives are free for usage.Thanks for the tip. Keep 'em coming! :thumbsup:ONEderer

You should be able to change your BIOS to boot from the other CD.That way you can test CDDA.Playing DVD's from PCLos requires a hard disk install. See the PCLos tips.The instructions for PCLos, however, should also work for Mandrake.Ummm. Will test the DVD procedure for Mandrake later. However, not tonight, getting close to sign off and I can not boot my test system (which has the DVD) to Mdk92 until some other tests are finished.

Boy, I'm trying to keep up with all this information!Ok, for your statement #3, I used 'livecd noapic'. And I didn't know what 'apic'stood for. Statement #4. I found that the the aRts server was off. I turned it on after.Statement #8 Currently, I don't have access to mp3/ogg audio files, only commercial music cd's.Statement#9 Again, I will have to dig into MS* to find some of those midi files. and in Mandrake, I've already change the aRts server from auto to "alsa", and to 16bit.Cheers!ONEderer

Well, I'm no good in this . . but can not find anything really wrong . . . Can you do the shoundchk.sh script in Drake 9.2 ?? ( now I see you have the noapic . . . . . );) Bruno

Hi all! Below is a copy of soundchk.sh (the latest that Owyn has sent me). This is for Mandrake 9.2, and with "NOAPIC". Hope this helps! Sorry, I could't do the copy/pasting fast enough before the aRts sound server bombed out. There is no output in the test for that. I believe that yesterday, and I forgot the circumstances, that I got an error message that the sound was not making it out to the PCM output.[root@Dell soundcheck]# exec ./sou*soundchk.sh v1.04 - Running Sound Configuration ChecksIdentifying SystemLinux Dell.readyaim.myserver.org 2.4.22-10mdk #1 Thu Sep 18 12:30:58 CEST 2003 i686 unknown unknown GNU/Linuxmodel name : Intel® Pentium® 4 CPU 3.06GHzcpu MHz : 3049.569MemTotal: 773908 kBSwapTotal: 506008 kBChecking Deviceslr-xr-xr-x 1 root root 13 Jan 26 01:48 admmidi -> sound/admmidilr-xr-xr-x 1 root root 10 Jan 26 01:48 adsp -> sound/adsplr-xr-xr-x 1 root root 11 Jan 26 01:48 amidi -> sound/amidilr-xr-xr-x 1 root root 11 Jan 26 01:48 audio -> sound/audiolr-xr-xr-x 1 root root 12 Jan 26 01:48 dmmidi -> sound/dmmidilr-xr-xr-x 1 root root 9 Jan 26 01:48 dsp -> sound/dsplr-xr-xr-x 1 root root 10 Jan 26 01:48 midi -> sound/midilr-xr-xr-x 1 root root 11 Jan 26 01:48 mixer -> sound/mixerlr-xr-xr-x 1 root root 15 Jan 26 01:48 sequencer -> sound/sequencerlr-xr-xr-x 1 root root 16 Jan 26 01:48 sequencer2 -> sound/sequencer2drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 0 Dec 31 1969 soundChecking Driveragpgart : Intel Corporation|82850 850 (Tehama) Chipset Host Bridge (MCH) [bRIDGE_HOST] (vendor:8086 device:2530 subv:1028 subd:0145)snd-emu10k1 : Creative Labs|[sB Live! You need to add the aumix package.$ su# urpmi aumixNext change your aRts setup to not start automatically with the session. Logout and Log back in.Next start a console and as user ie. not as root, run the following command.$ /usr/bin/artsd -F 10 -S 4096 -a alsa -s 1 -m artsmessage -l 3 -fThis should catch any error messages from aRts

From what I can tell, it is still running, and I assume that you want me to keep it running. I also assume that the aRts server will operate automatically when it is needed. Is that correct?$ /usr/bin/artsd -F 10 -S 4096 -a alsa -s 1 -m artsmessage -l 3 -fThere are already artsd objects registered, looking if they are active...... cleaned 5 unused mcop global references.ONEderer

Below, is a copy of the sound produced afer all those procedures that I followed:Yes, I know, it is blank. Just like the DVD movie sound coming out of the speakers. NADA! CD music is fine, and so is the microphone. And to top it off, this is a new installation, and now the machine will not shut down properly. The closing operation has to be finished manually, with pushing the OFF button. So now, it's developed some bad Inodes. I'm going to have to use PClos (if it doesn't mount the Mandrake drives) to do fsck.ext3 to see if I can repair the problems.The command to check errors for the sound server, entered in the command prompt, produces no output from the aRts server.I still dream of the day when I can stop being a Linux fixer-upper and start being a user again.ONEderer :)

Another Update:Boy I've busy to see if I could come up with something!On another forum, they suggested that Dell has been using other chips on the sound card, instead of the emu10k1 chip. This makes it a proprietary hardware, if they are right.When I run 'sndconfig', it reports the right board and as an emu10k1 chip. But it says that the card is not supported by the system. And Mandrake reports it also as an emu10k1 board.Someone on that forum suggested that I run Alsamixer. When I did, in text mode, it popped up, and I set the parameters in there. But when I looked at the top of the application, the header read: SigmaTel Stac9708/11. If that is the chip that is being used, then I'm toast! SigmaTel doesn't make any drivers for its chips and won't support end-users, and DELL doesn't acknowledge nor support Linux. I think that Dell thinks that cursing is probably more courteous than to mention the word Linux. One of their techs hung up on me when I mentioned the "L" word. If it is a non-standard chip, then they must have doctored up WinXP to specially run that chip. But I don't know for sure.So much for research. I'm going to bed. What do you think, based on these facts?ONEderer

They hung up as soon as you mentioned Linux? That does not sound very good for Dell. I would not be anxious to use them in that case. I take it you can not find anything for the SigmaTel Stac9708/11? Just because a company does not make "drivers" for Linux does not necessarily mean that someone out there has not created them. Google Results show where others have successfully gotten this particular card to work. Take a look. You will find some threads where others have figured it out. --Julia :D

@#$% !! . . Why did this not dawn on me before ? We had, a long time ago another member with a Dell and the SB Live card . . . . Looks like he had the same problems . . . . This Dell card is not a real SB Live card . . There seems however to be some hope . . . . they tell me there are special drivers here: http://www.opensound.com/osshw.html . . scroll down the page and you will find: - Sound Blaster 5.1 (Dell) *See README.EMU10K1X* -This is the READMEYou can download the drivers Here but there is a catch:

The evaluation copy of OSS comes with a FREE limited time evaluation license which is activated on the day you install OSS. The software will only work for a limited time. A permanant license key can be ordered here
Anyway Here are the install instructions . . . . . Of course what you could do as well, ( and my advice ) is pull the card and plug in a *real* SB Live . . . . because that Dell one will keep on giving you grief with each new install and each new distro you want to test.Adn, I don't know how much $ the licence is, but a new card might be cheaper in the long run . . :D Bruno

Excellent idea. Sound cards, including Sound Blaster, can be found very cheap. I think you ccan still pick one up for under $20. Of course, if you want something fancy, you might have to pay more. :D --Julia :(

My model of my DELL is exactly the same as the link that you put in your post. It is a Dimension 8250. Now, what I found was that there are some drivers and codecs available on the internet, but they all require to patch the kernel, and to compile everything! There is not a single one that is binary ready! And that compilation is not easy, and a lot of it. I saved some of what I found on my hard drive, but kinda leery to tackle that problem.Other news: I found that I have on my hard drive, a module called 'ac97**'. It is a codec for the SigmaTel Stac9708/11 chip. Outside of calling 'modprobe' or 'insmod', what else do I do to try the effects of this codec in this machine? What must I remove, and how? But I still suspect that the kernel has to be patched, unless the codec module takes care of the whole thing. I got the codec in there now, and a DVD movie is running. But, still no sound!The codec shows up in lsmod. And from what I read, it is supposed to be usable with either OSS or Alsa, and emu10k1.And, where do we go from here? I don't want to go shopping if I don't have to. And how did the other guy solve his problem? :huh:Cheers!ONEderer :'(

Ummm.May be able to pretest with PCLos PV5. It has a "livecd snd=driver" option to force use of a specific sound driver.Need to do some research first on Sigmatel and available drivers from PV5.Later.
