ibe98765 Posted January 7, 2004 Posted January 7, 2004 In WinXP, I can right-click on a photo of various formats, select properties, then click on the summary tab to add any info I have about the photo. This works for BMP, JPEG and TIFF. However it does not work (at least on my system) for GIF's. I get a message:Summary properties are unavailable for the selected source(s).Is this a problem on my system or something to do with the GIF format? If it is generic to GIF files, anyone know why? Guest Paracelsus Posted January 7, 2004 Posted January 7, 2004 HHHhhmmmm!! Interesting...Never used that option, myself. But checking the GIF's on my WinXPHome, all the input fields on the Summary tab are grayed-out.Other image formats, as you mentioned, are available for adding info.No idea why this is...But I do not get the message you underscored.System specific?? Jeber Posted January 7, 2004 Posted January 7, 2004 Oh boy, it's one of those guess-a-thons. I love these.OK, my guess has to do with the format. A .gif image is usually a series of several frames. So the system won't let you make a note on only one frame. Maybe it has to do with the way the code is written.I suppose we should wait around for someone with a real answer. But we can keep guessing until they show up. Quote
siebkens Posted January 7, 2004 Posted January 7, 2004 Oooh a guess-a-thon!! I love these. Am I going to win incredible prizes like SNFL credits again?!?This is what I see when I rc on a gif & choose Properties/ Summary (just searched my hd for a random gif): gif-----------------The can't wait for the final answer Sieb! B)edited by Sieb:Oh well, I guess I don't win all of the incredible prizes. When I chose simple in properties/ summary, all was greyed out too. And here I thought I was going to win the BIG BIG PRIZE!!----Will keep trying for the BIG WATER COOLER PRIZE!! Quote
Peachy Posted January 7, 2004 Posted January 7, 2004 Oooh, yes, guess-a-thons! Good one, Jeber. As far as I know there are two types of GIF (Graphic Interchange Format) files: GIF87a and GIF89a. The latter type allows for things such as animated GIFs and transparency layers. Apparently you CAN add comments to a GIF file, but, like everyone so far, I've noticed it's greyed out in XP. Quote
Freddy Posted January 7, 2004 Posted January 7, 2004 Must be an OS thing. Win2k lets you add comments. Quote
havnblast Posted January 7, 2004 Posted January 7, 2004 Should be able to use a graphics editor and than go to save it and add a comment no??The guess-a-thon needs more guessers! Quote
Ed_P Posted January 7, 2004 Posted January 7, 2004 Interesting, with my XP Home version GIF and BMP files are treated the same, no Comments allowed. Can do with JPGs.Not a guess, just an observation. Quote
ibe98765 Posted January 7, 2004 Author Posted January 7, 2004 Interesting, with my XP Home version GIF and BMP files are treated the same, no Comments allowed. Can do with JPGs.Not a guess, just an observation. Actually you are correct (I was wrong in my initial post). BMP on my WinXP Pro only shows info like resolution and frame count. You can't modify that format either. But at least it shows something rather than just the error message for GIF.OTOH, Freddy above says that he can add comments in Win2K. Hmmm? How about on Win98? Quote
Guest LilBambi Posted January 8, 2004 Posted January 8, 2004 Single info tab only in Win98SE when right clicking properties in the Windows Explorer. No summary tab.Is that what you are referring to ibe98765? Quote
Corrine Posted January 8, 2004 Posted January 8, 2004 Here's what it looks like filled out, Fran: Quote
Guest LilBambi Posted January 8, 2004 Posted January 8, 2004 Thank Corrine :)Is that in XP? ... On my XP box for .jpg files, I have a simple and advanced button. If I use the simple button I can edit but the advanced just shows various properties including some of the ones I can change in the simple.I do not have this option available on the simple button with .gif files....all greyed (or in my case, all tanned LOL!).As a side note, I can make these types of changes to .pcx and .psp files as well, but not .bmp, .wmf or .png files in XP Pro. havnblast Posted January 8, 2004 Posted January 8, 2004 That's what everyone else is saying too Fran Quote
