BillD Posted August 6, 2011 Posted August 6, 2011 (edited) The vertical slider for windows, if the there is more content for the window than will fit in the visible portion, in Ubuntu 11 and its derivatives, seems to have been changed to an odd-ball thing that is just a barely visible bright spot along the right side of the window until you hover the mouse over it, and then the actual slider appears.Does anybody know how to tweak things so that windows have a conventional slider? Thanks,Bill Edited August 6, 2011 by BillD Quote

Gnome2, Gnome3, or Unity? Quote
BillD Posted August 7, 2011 Author Posted August 7, 2011 (edited) I guess it is essentially Gnome 2 as used in Ubuntu 11.04. Problem is they have gone to what seemed to be called "overlay scrollbars" . . . and I think they are just a nuisance; I have to squint to see the light area where the actual scroll bar will appear when I mouse over it. Makes for an additional step to scroll it seems to me.Thanks,Bill Edited August 7, 2011 by BillD Quote

The reason I asked is because Ubuntu 11.04 defaults to Unity desktop manager.Found the solution: Disable Overlay Scrollbars in Ubuntu Natty Quote

BillD Posted August 7, 2011 Author Posted August 7, 2011 (edited) Well, it appears that I should have done another search after I found out the name for the problem; e.g., "overlay scrollbars" which I put in the second post. I had no idea everyone would not know what I was talking about before I found out the name. But I had no idea it was such a thoroughly disliked feature; I figured people must like it or it would not be there, and I still don't see the point in it.So thank you Securitybreach; you did me a real service there and I appreciate it. As Eric facetiously said "Man! This is why we pay Securitybreach the BIG bucks!" . Great link!Thank you,Bill Edited August 7, 2011 by BillD Quote

Great link!Thank you,Bill No problem, I just searched for "ubuntu disable overlay scrollbar" and it was the first link. I had no idea what the "feature" was called and it would of been harder to find if you had not posted the name of it. Thanks for the compliment though Quote

I use them all though Chrome in Windows, Chromium in Linux, Firefox in both (but less, that's why it only gets a link)! We shouldn't have to stick to just one browser! Quote
saqman2060 Posted August 9, 2011 Posted August 9, 2011 This is really good stuff. Although, I like the overlay-scrollbars, it is good to know how to remove them. Quote

BillD Posted August 18, 2011 Author Posted August 18, 2011 (edited) The link provided by Securitybreach above never did fully remove the overlay scrollbar problem; some stuff related to home still had the problem, so I did another search and came up with several like this: http://mikebeach.org/2011/05/disable-the-o...n-ubuntu-natty/Which also remove the libraries connected with the thing:sudo apt-get remove overlay-scrollbar liboverlay-scrollbar-0.1-0 And that fully solves the problem and does not require rebooting or logging out.I mention this solely to provide a complete and final answer to this thread, should anyone else be bothered by the scrollbar business in Ubuntu, Mint, Pinguy or any other OS based on Ubuntu.Bill Edited August 18, 2011 by BillD Quote
k9wkj Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011 Oh man, thanks for this! Those "scrollbars" are terrible!yeah they sure arewhat were they thinking thats its useful and nice ?i keep ubuntu on the otherside of the room so i dont have to use it Quote
BillD Posted August 19, 2011 Author Posted August 19, 2011 what were they thinking thats its useful and nice ? The only thing I can figure out is that someone was not thinking; they just got an idea for a new feature and put it in without any discussion with anyone else . . . I cannot conceive that many people would really want that idiotic performance. It made scrolling downright difficult in many cases.Bill Quote
