Scot Posted April 11, 2003 Posted April 11, 2003 You probably have some sort of firewall or other security program that is blocking JavaScripts.-- Scot Quote
owlman77 Posted April 11, 2003 Author Posted April 11, 2003 Scott,That is what I was afraid it might be however even after I disable Norton Internet Security it does not seem to help (I have Add Blocking turned off because it was interfering with Operamail when I tried to view recieved messages). Thanks for the responce OwlmanP.S. I hope to be able to post a help answer some day if ever I feel sure of my self to do so. Keep up the very helpful forum and newsletter. Quote
Raker Posted April 12, 2003 Posted April 12, 2003 I have the same problem & have been unable to solve it,I am running XP Pro Quote
Scot Posted April 12, 2003 Posted April 12, 2003 Owlman and Raker, it'd be helpful if you could give us a list of other programs and utilities you have installed on your system. A lot of different types of programs can potentially cause this problem. If the problem is happening in multiple Web browsers, it's probably not a Windows-specific control or setting. So we need more info to diagnose it. A screenshot of the error message might also help. If you want you can send it to me in email.-- Scot Quote
Guest LilBambi Posted April 12, 2003 Posted April 12, 2003 You might want to check your scripting settings in IE ... they are probably set to disable.... Custom Level probably.Tools|Internet Options*|Security|Custom LevelThen you would check to see what things are disabled ... those are the ones that are probably not loading.I have all of my set to Prompt so I can decide which sites I want to allow them to load on and those that I don't.There are just too many rogue javascripts, activex scripts, etc. out there in my opinion. And many sites that I don't want ANY scripts running.Just a thought. Quote
Stryder Posted April 12, 2003 Posted April 12, 2003 Sorry, but I have to ask.....do you guys have java installed???? Quote
Guest LilBambi Posted April 12, 2003 Posted April 12, 2003 Sorry, but I have to ask.....do you guys have java installed????Stryder --I use Sun's Java instead of M$'s Java VM ... but the WindowsUpdate drives me crazy if I don't update whenever M$ has a critical update on their Java VM....so I just did their new update (even though I have it turned off) ... did you see my post in the WindowsUpdate thread to see the interesting experience I had with the update? Guest ComputerBob Posted April 12, 2003 Posted April 12, 2003 Now I'm confused, too. I thought his browser's problem was with JavaScripts, not with Java. Did I misunderstand the problem? Quote

Well, if you do not have Java installed, you will not be able to run java scripts. I always check the obvious first. As I understand it, the Java VM is for running Java Applets .. you do not need it to run jscripts, otherwise called 'java scripts' - and these can be handled generally by any browser (in varying degrees of success even without a Java VM. Unless I totally misunderstood the original question Quote

Unless I totally misunderstood the original question That's right. Java Applets and Javascripts are two different things that, unfortunately, have similar names. You need a Java VM in order to run Java Applets. You don't need a Java VM to run JavaScripts. To run JavaScripts, you just need a browser that can run JavaScripts; you need to have that capability enabled in the browser settings; and you need to make sure that you don't have a firewall or other security hardware or software that's blocking them. Please forgive me if I'm wrong, but If I understand this thead correctly, then it seems to me that any replies related to installing/upgrading various versions of Java Virtual Machine, are not relevant to Owlman's and Raker's original problem. owlman77 Posted April 14, 2003 Author Posted April 14, 2003 Thanks LilBambi after I started to allow more freedom in the scripts that run the pages seem to open now. Owlman Quote
Guest LilBambi Posted April 14, 2003 Posted April 14, 2003 Owlman --Cool ... You are very welcome. Happy to be of help Please, be careful though. There are some pretty nasty things out there ... and your browsing around the net was probably actually safer with the more stringent settings ... even if it was a nuisance to have pages that open with nothing in them Quote
