I just find it so humorous that people arguing for Arnold make the case of Clint Eastwood and Carmel. That was the 80s in a town that in the grand scheme of things a poor decision by the mayor wouldn't amount to much. Of course, the people who make that argument seem to think he is still the mayor of Carmel which goes to prove my theory that most people arguing politics use 98% courage and 2% wisdom. (CBS.MW) -- Gov. Gray Davis is toast. Arnold Schwarzenegger is going to win in a landslide.This has become obvious to most people who live in California. The exception has been the press -- "reporters" and analysts alike. On both their front pages and their editorial pages, every major newspaper in California, with the exception of the San Diego Union, has been blatantly supportive of Davis and totally disdainful of Schwarzenegger. The pandering to the incumbent governor by the state's two most influential newspapers, the Los Angles Times and the San Francisco Chronicle, resembles the blind endorsement of Stalin or Brezhnev by Pravda and Isvestia in the good old days of the Soviet Union. And all this in the face of a massive rejection of Davis by what in the end will amount to two-thirds of the voters in a state where Democrats outnumber Republicans by a very substantial margin. The outcome of this election will be determined by those voters who, regardless of party affiliation, are fed up with Davis's performance and behavior.Leaving aside the fact that the Golden State has moved from massive surplus to massive deficit during his tenure -- after all, so have the federal government and most other states -- Davis's total mismanagement of the energy crisis here cost the voters of this state $20 billion at a minimum, reason enough to get rid of him. But what has really put Californians off is his lack of principles arising from his desperate desire to retrain the trappings of power. In return for countless millions of dollars of political contributions, he totally caved in to the Indian tribes and the gaming interests in Las Vegas where casinos are concerned, despite the environmental havoc they are inflicting on the California landscape. In his search for the Latino vote, Davis was more than willing to execute a 180-degree turn on the issue of allowing illegal immigrants to get drivers' licenses. He gave unionized prison guards whatever they wanted in return for their votes. Ditto for the teachers union, despite the continuing deplorable conditions of California's public schools. Not to leave anybody out, he suddenly rediscovered religion. The word that all this evoked from what is now the majority of Californians: "Disgusting!" Yet the California press remains silent.The media on the East Coast haven't been much better in its coverage of this landmark political event. They described it as a circus, as incompatible with the American system of representative democracy. Democracy in actionDirect democracy is neither. To be sure, as the ancient Greeks who invented democracy found out, direct democracy can often be a rough-and-tumble affair. So did Switzerland in medieval Europe. But it's the purest form of democracy. And it can produce basic change despite the opposition to change by the entrenched political establishment. Californians did just that a couple of decades ago with Proposition 13. And the Swedish electorate did the same a couple of weeks ago, massively rejecting adoption of the euro as their currency.Recalls are an integral part of democratic systems of government, and not just as a means for removing politicians guilty of criminal behavior. When a political leader loses the confidence of the electorate, he or she is fair game for dismissal. That's what votes of confidence in the mother of all parliaments -- Great Britain -- are all about. You lose that vote, and out you go even if you had been elected to office just a few months earlier -- as is the case with Davis in California. Few have any illusions that Schwarzenegger will emerge as a philosopher king with a funny accent, but many have the hope that he will be able to at least temporarily pull the rug from under the lifetime political professionals who have been running this state into the ground for all too long.The bigger pictureWhat's happening in California should represent a wakeup call for the political and corporate elite throughout the United States. Increasingly, Americans are becoming mad as ****, and, finally, are beginning to do something about it. They are fed up with governance by a privileged few -- Republicans and Democrats alike -- unconcerned about what their constituents think or want. The rich corporate elite, past and present, who are prime beneficiaries of President Bush's tax policy and who play a key role in the formulation of his foreign policy, fall into this category as does the entire board of governors of the New York Stock Exchange.So look out, guys. We're coming at you and your corporate jets and your limos and your $2 million birthday parties in Sardinia, your obscene compensation packages, your tax loopholes, and especially your smug attitudes. And yes, this is a wake up call to other politicians as well. The people are sick and tired of being taken advantage of and not being listened to. I didn't vote for AH-NOLD ...... but I will support him in his efforts to get California back on track.And if he doesn't do his job, we will fire him as well!
