Guest LilBambi Posted August 28, 2003 Posted August 28, 2003 No worries ... quality is always more important than quantity ;)All our members regardless of their level of participation are appreciated That's the beauty of Forums ... you can participate a little or a lot, and that may change from day to day for all of us. Freddy Posted August 28, 2003 Posted August 28, 2003 Is that really a waste? I always thought i was just being nice.I tend to look for threads that discuss a particular problem of interest. Posts that are too wordy or threads full of 'thanks for the links' and other bits of fluff just don't make for interesting reading.I also find some links are to topics already discussed in other newsletters. Guest LilBambi Posted August 31, 2003 Posted August 31, 2003 Lots of interesting reading on the SFNL Forums regardless of your frame of reference Quote
havnblast Posted August 31, 2003 Posted August 31, 2003 Yes I totally agree with you on that. Never a dull moment Quote
Jeber Posted September 1, 2003 Posted September 1, 2003 I had a dull moment yesterday reading these forums...turned out I hadn't hit "refresh" or changed pages for several minutes . Quote
teacher Posted September 1, 2003 Posted September 1, 2003 [ You could also send a PM to the person you want to thank if they've gone above and beyond your expectations... Maybe it is the school teacher in me, but I was always taught to "praise in public, discipline in private." turned out I hadn't hit "refresh" or changed pages for several minutes .JeberI thought I was the only one that did that. The other thing that gets me is I refresh waiting for a reply and don't notice that it has gone to a new page. I try to pay attention but that one usually slips past me.Posts that are too wordy or threads full of 'thanks for the links' and other bits of fluff just don't make for interesting reading.FreddyI don't care about length. If it is well written you can just scan the beginning of each paragraph to see if it is of interest. No one told me I had to read every word. In fact, a few months ago I read every post in the forum. Now I rarely get out of the Linux forum. There is just so much here that it is hard to keep up with multiple forums. Quote

If someone posts a 20 page PDF or article or something, i'll scan it, but i don't have time to read it unless it's something that's really important to me. Or if a see i new subject that already has 30 posts, i might stay away from that one too.It all depends on the day I try to read everything in the forum, but, there is only so much time in the day. volunteer Posted September 1, 2003 Posted September 1, 2003 This is the best forum! You get great help with all your technical problems. The mods are helpful, tactful and polite. A few that post their problems act like they're paying for the help but the mods are still always polite and tactful. True, in a few threads we do have some friendly exchanges that may seem out of context. The humor and camaraderie is well worth it. Ken Quote
ChrisP Posted September 3, 2003 Posted September 3, 2003 I for one have an extremely hard time finding the time to do much more than browse through the forums looking for topics to which I can make a valuable contribution. The reason is that this is my busiest time of year -- so many school districts that are all doing now the things that they put off from September through June -- and now they want everything ready for when the little darlings show up again! It keeps me pretty busy normally, but it's worse this year due to some minor but persistent health issues... Guest LilBambi Posted September 3, 2003 Posted September 3, 2003 No worries ChrisP ... we appreciate your participation whenever you can be here And keeping those lil'darlin's happy and learning is a big job! Quote

With school starting, i almost have no time for here Hopefullythings will calm down a little in a month or two. Untill then, i'm affraid there is no way i could spend the amount of time here that i spent this summer. But, i'm sneeking a peek every chance i get ;)ChrisP: I'm sorry to hear about your health issues. Hopefully they will get better soon. Quote

And they do come first. We look forward to seeing you whenever you can get here. Quote
Freddy Posted September 10, 2003 Posted September 10, 2003 The best way to up the participation is to get the word out, obviously. Start finding other forums and start bragging about how helpfull the newsletter and forms are. Quote
Jeber Posted September 10, 2003 Posted September 10, 2003 can you add an extra digit to the number of my postsCan't help ya' there. Besides, I'm a quality over quantity kind of guy. But you could always tell people that as the post counts only go to a million (and I have no idea if that's true, but then...), you're on your second time around. Kind of like the odometer on my last pickup. Quote

trigggl Posted September 18, 2003 Posted September 18, 2003 Does it strike anyone else as ironic that everyone who has posted an opinion in this thread is one of the 45 who have over 100 posts? Guess that proves the theory. I guess that means that I need to add my 2 cents.I wouldn't want to shirk my duty of posting to this thread. RandomBox Posted September 18, 2003 Posted September 18, 2003 Avatar Conspiracy at SFNL!It maybe the work of the himself! If you guyz don't stop this shenanigan I may pop a fuse or two!I had to reply just to get my posts up! Quote
FuzzButt Posted September 27, 2003 Posted September 27, 2003 Ok well from one who has 203 at the time of this post I would like to say THANK YOU to Scot.Thank You for setting this all up. A good forum is hard to find. There are many out there that are just plain over run with garbage. This fourm is well moderated and those that do post do so wisely. I agree that many times other boards have the one or two word reply's. These are annoying after a while. I have seen a post in another board with 30 reply's all saing "Me Too". Those are the one's I steer clear of.I hope participation increases. I like the challenge of helping someone through a problem. While I do it in person and get paid for it this is my own way of giving back and asking for help of my own at the same time. There is a lot to be learned from shared experiances. I do have a quick question. Do the moderators here get special post increases by just reading a post? How is nearly 3000 posts possible in 6 months? The other board I visit a few guy's have just over 3000 posts but that is over 5 years. Maybe this is just the new math everyone is talking about.Chris Quote
siebkens Posted September 27, 2003 Posted September 27, 2003 Teach & I & others had LOTS of questions when setting up Linux & the penquin never sleeps! Quote
Jeber Posted September 27, 2003 Posted September 27, 2003 Do the moderators here get special post increases by just reading a post?Nope. And the post count also doesn't include all the PM's sent back and forth. Siebkins nailed it...when the Linux forum took off, I'd see Bruno or Teacher post 40-50 times a day, sometimes more. LilBambi's count is from all over the forums. It varies so much, and for so many reasons, that that's why I have trouble assigning any real value to post counts. More important is what the person has to say. Quote
GolfProRM Posted September 27, 2003 Posted September 27, 2003 If you click on Bruno's profile and hit "View all posts by this user" you'll get that many posts (with 99.9% of them being helpful... I still doubt that the man ever sleeps or does anything outside of this board (with the exception of his trip to France of course ) Quote
siebkens Posted September 27, 2003 Posted September 27, 2003 OK, Teach had a FEW more questions than me, but look where we are now. Teach is a forum moderator for Linux & I'm still just a Mandrake dual-booter & Knoppix wannabe. ----------Bruno, calm yourself, I know that the word Knoppix does strange things to penquins! Quote
teacher Posted September 27, 2003 Posted September 27, 2003 SiebI think you have it wrong. I think it is the Mandrake that does strange things.....or just the word "Linux". Glad to see they are still in your vocabulary. I do ask a lot of questions but I am still learning. If I find out I know it all then I am in big trouble because I then know nothing. Quote
SonicDragon Posted September 27, 2003 Posted September 27, 2003 How is nearly 3000 posts possible in 6 months? There are some really dedicated people here. Sometimes, one problem, install, etc, can end up becoming a 30 page post. Quote
RandomBox Posted September 29, 2003 Posted September 29, 2003 That's it jeber, I think I am gonna go re-register under a different name just to prove you wrong!NOT Quote

Jeber Posted October 1, 2003 Posted October 1, 2003 For a thread about low participation...it's sure gotten a lot of it. Quote
RandomBox Posted October 1, 2003 Posted October 1, 2003 This has been bugging me for awhile, and I must point this out! And this is as good a topic as any to do so:I am noticing that the SFNL forum is NOT getting as many questions about problems with neither Windows OS or Application software for WinOS! *Could it be that MicroSoft is doing such a "grand job" with their OS anymore that no one really needs help?*Could it be that anyone having problems are more inclined to go and dry hump Google for answers?*Could it be that the "computer" has finally become mainstream and is entering the era of becoming an appliance (such as a TV)?*Is what I am noticing here similar at the Linux forums?*I think this is a good thing for the whole computer industry.*I think It is also a great thing for consumers.*I also think that the definition of a geek is taking on a different and narrowed meaning!Sorry for thinking so much! Argh! Quote
