ivan
I am thoroughly unimpressed with MSN Mail, Hot Mail, Outlook Express. All from MicrosoftDo you have a way of making POP3 work with Qwest DSL? Apparently Qwest has a working agreement with Microsoft.I am told that all the Microsoft email programs use http, not pop3. They tell me there is no way to convert, yet some friends have mentioned that it should be no problem to change. To me it is a problem. Perhaps Thunderbird or Courier has a http program that would work?? I have used both Thunderbird and Courier Mail in past and was satisfied. What are your thoughts on this? FuzzButt
You should be able to use any pop3 client on your DSL. The medium is not restricted in transmitting pop3 traffic, likely on port 110. Quest might however block the SMTP port so you may have issues sending email other than to their smtp servers unless your new email account supports alternate port assignments. For example I have AT&T DSL. It comes with a Yahoo hosted email address using their pop3 server, pop.sbcglobal.yahoo.com on 110 and SMTP smtp.sbcglobal.yahoo.com on port 25. I cannot use port 25 without using their smtp server or it does not send. My web host offers 2 pther ports I can use and 587 does work.Looks like the supplied email from quest is going to be an all or nothing thing. Http access only. You might need to set your email up with another host to get real pop3 mail. This page has all of Quest's info on what servers to use and where http://www.qwest.net/help/roaming.html but it is hard to tell if you have to pay more to use it. Some sources say it is $20 more a month for email.Personally I would get a Gmail account and set up your email client of choice to grab it using gmail's pop3 support (pop.gmail.com and smtp.gmail.com) or IMAP support. You can use Thunderbird with this. See http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=38343 for thunderbird instructions.Hope this helps. ivan
Have you tried the new Live Mail?Yes, I have Live Mail, but still not well pleased with it either. Thanks for suggestion, IvanDefinitely PPPoE I'd say. These DSL modems are pretty intelligent now.If the original poster is plugged directly to the modem he can enter 192.168.1.1 in Firefox, and add his userID and password on the modem configuration menu. The modem can handle DHCP and give him a local NAT address (192.168.1.X).
