cybormoron Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 (edited) i'm scratching my head trying to unsort this mess again. 1. main updates unreachable.2. removed main sources.3. added main sources from easyurpmi.zarb.4. still unreachable.5. tried again, it worked. shows current updates available.6. updates also included other packages. i probably should have stopped at this point but i didn't.7. i rebooted into a blank screen. no screens found.one of the packages was dkms virtualbox driver 1.5.4.help!!! alphaomega Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 I can relate with the "no screens found" andborking nvidia during an update. What helps me is:Manually configuring my xorg.conf to use nv(in case I need to get into X and get online to research the problem)...or I'll try...booting to init 3as surunning a urpmi.update -aand if it comes up clean...removing and re-installing the nvidia driver(in my case the dkms legacy one)and running XFDrake to select my graphics cardand re-bootingAt which point...I'm usually back in with nvidia working.Hope this helps...Cheers Quote
cybormoron Posted January 16, 2008 Author Posted January 16, 2008 (edited) thanks alphaomega...putting nv in xorg gives me my x screen. i think i can work a little better with a gui rather than sh prompt, lol.now i guess my next step is undo whatever it is i did without reinstalling.here's what happened. the updates showed up but it wanted to install other packages. i unknowingly had the plf source enabled. (my bad). i went for it without looking too close. i have a loose trigger finger for yes buttons. please see screenshot.so can i just use mcc to uninstall the nvidia driver at this point? everything else seems ok. i have a wonderful 3200x1200 desktop on one monitor that slides over when i touch the edge of the screen. i could probably remove the "TwinView" option from xorg and just use one monitor. alphaomega Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 Again...I can relate...(having a loose trigger with plf enabled)...You should have no problem removing nvidia from mcc...but re-installing it from there...I never do that (I always use the cli for that).Got used to doing it that way...because I find it easier(ever since I first ran into problems using nvidia legacy). And I also don't attempt any updates unless...urpmi.update -agoes through without error.Hope this helps...Cheers Quote
Bruno Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 My guess is that there was a kernel upgrade and you did not install the matching kernel-source . . . Could you do "uname -r" ?? And "ls -al /usr/src" ?? BrunoPS: 3. added main sources from easyurpmi.zarb . . . better use the "add"-tool in the MCC . . . the easyurpmi.zarb should only be used to get the PLF sources. Quote
cybormoron Posted January 16, 2008 Author Posted January 16, 2008 (edited) ok, i'm back in business. i think? i have my dual screens working. i uninstalled the nvidia driver that i inadvertenly installed. then used mcc to reconfigure x server (xfdrake?). i guess the system just went back to the old module. my xorg is different but it works. i guess i just saved my butt from another painful reinstall, lol. thanks alphaomega.about the sources bruno. i just learned what a synthesis list is the other day so i went to zarb to see if a full list is different. probably not a good experiment. i'll remove those lists and re-add from mcc.here's those commands bruno. everything has been working good since my last fiasco. Bruno Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 Glad you're back in business Anyway, from the output of the commands it sure looks like you do have the correct kernel-source for the kernel you are running . . . . so my guess was wrong  Bruno Quote
alphaomega Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 Cybormoron...do you know which nvidia driver you should be using?I know (speaking for myself)...before I knew that Iwas supposed to be using the legacy driver...I tried installing what I thought was the lastestnvidia driver "nvidia-current"...only to have to manually remove the latest and re-install the legacy driver.I notice you have 3:nvidia71xx-1.0-7185.5mdv2008.0/nvidia96xx-1.0-9639.4mdv2008.0/nvidia-current-100.14.19-1mdv2008.0/So when something like this happened to me...I had to remove all the nvidia driversand manually install the nvidia71xx legacy driver...but in my case I used the dkms nvidia71xx driver. And as Bruno mentioned...I also needed to makesure I had the kernel sources installed to matchthe particular kernel I was running.Once I had all that done from the cli...on next re-boot...I was back up and running.Hope this helps...Cheers Quote
cybormoron Posted January 17, 2008 Author Posted January 17, 2008 actually you're probably right bruno, those commands are after i restored the old driver. i just accidently installed a driver and didn't realize it. oh well, i learned how to fix it this time without panicking and reinstalling my whole system. i also put the correct sources back in place. so we're back where we left off in this thread http://forums.scotsnewsletter.com/index.php?showtopic=19989 after mandriva fixed that bad update my system runs good so i just thought i'd leave it alone but alphaomega brings a good question. should i adjust things or just leave them alone? as long as virtualbox works i'm happy. do you know which nvidia driver you should be using?good question ao. i really haven't a clue. i think mandriva one just bundles everything together. my system seems to work ok when i'm not screwing things up so i haven't been too concerned.thanks for help guys. alphaomega Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 (edited) I did an ftp install and it correctly detectedthat I needed to use the old legacy drivers...(because my card was no longer supported in the latest driver)(I did not get all the other drivers)but there were a few times before when it wanted to give me the latest nvidia driverand I had to remove it and manually installthe old legacy one from the cli.I had to read through the docs for the various nvidia drivers to determine exacly which one I was supposed to be using.CheersCybermoronps. I went to nvidia's site to read through thedocs to see if I could determine which driversupports your card...but the site is downright now for maintainance. Will try later.p.s.s. I did see a mention on one page thatthe geforce fx 5200 was a legacy card...so I wonder if you should be using the old legacy driver 71xx? Will double check further when the sites pages are up again. Bruno Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 I have an XF 5200 nvidia card . . . and use the "nvidia-current-100.14.19-1mdv2008.0" driver . . . . ( came installed by default with the powerpack . . . but should be available in the non-free repositories for those that dodn't have the powerpack ) Bruno Quote
striker Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 I use the nvidia FX5200 on the old machine, if needed let me know and I'm happy to post exactly which nvidia version I used on those distros. (for the distros see my profile, it's machine 2) Quote
alphaomega Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 Thanks for the info... I was just curious if he should be using the old legacy drivers (71xx) like I have to with my old vanta card.Nvidia lists the FX5200 as legacy...but I guess it's not that old if it workswith the "nvidia-current-100.14.19-1mdv2008.0" driver.Cheers Quote
