Greetings to all, I've a wee problem I'd appreciate some help with. Over the last couple of months all the PC's on my home wireless network keep droping their internet connection. I'm not sure if ny router is to blaim or my ISP (madasafish). Take the router out of the picture and connect one computer directly to the modem. If the problem persists, you have modem issues. If your connection stays up, then your router is likely to blame.Kevin

Verizon has the same setup here too in VA. You can disable the routing functions if you want.
I think it has pretty much become the standard. I know both Bell South and Earthlink both have routers built into their modems too. So you just need a switch to connect more computers. At least now you no longer have to lie and say you're connected directly to the modem in order to get them to run the diagnostics.

Yes, Gateway router and DSL/cable modem combos seem to be the way the cable and DSL folks are going. It definitely has it's upsides, making sure there is a hardware NAT in front of the user's computers. But does make it difficult to diagnose the problem by having a multipurpose device like that.Hope you hear back from your provider soon.

  • 3 weeks later...

My connection was conking out repeatedly, seemingly at random starting just around the start of the holidays. I checking everything running in my PC, all my settings, my router, my modem, called my ISP, had a line check done, you name it. Then it turned out my 2 year old had been fiddling with the phone jack.

Yes indeed. Bell Sympatico has had this for a while now. In fact, last night I hooked up one for my neighbour with Bell Sympatico and his has wireless capabilities as well. I think that's their newest modem and it just came out.
At least now you no longer have to lie and say you're connected directly to the modem in order to get them to run the diagnostics.
Hahaha...been there done that. They really don't like it when I tell them I have a SmoothWall router installed. I never call for support because I can fix everything on my end myself, I just tell them that when they call me trying to sell me their own router. After they're done explaining how a router would be beneficial (I let them waste their time doing that even though I already know) they get totally confused as soon as I start going into detail about the Smoothie. :hysterical: Edited by daveydoom

All of those commands are modem to ISP (rather the DSLAM if this is DSL). The reason for thier failure is what your looking for. I'd try replacing the DSL filter on the line going to your modem and unplug all but 1 telephone. I did a search of your initialize error and there are sites all around the world with this issue. I don't know how the phone wiring is in the UK but in my house it was a daisy chain and I changed it to a star layout. I also use 1 DSL filter at the main line direct to the modem's home run and then split off to the telephone's home runs. If it's not a filter then it is a phone company issue or your modem/router.
