teacher
I start my adventure in Crossover with Quicken. Quicken is my make or break for going cold turkey on Windows and going with just Linux. I install Quicken and it works great. I went back to install other software and my menu items are gone. I can't get into Quicken or Crossover. I reboot and I then have a Windows Applications menu with Quicken on it. I emailed CodeWeavers because I lost the menu to add programs after doing Quicken. Quicken worked beautifully, except it insisted on bringing IE with it (which doesn't work . They indicated there is a problem specifically to Mandrake that makes the menu disappear but you can still pull it up with the command line of /opt/cxoffice/bin/cxsetup. So I did that and got back into it. I decided I wanted to try some games. I really like Hoyle puzzle games and word games. What can I say, I am a puzzle addict (is that why I am in Mandrake now?). That worked great. So now I have Quicken, IE, Hoyle Puzzle, and Hoyle Word. Wonderful. All works but IE. The Hoyle were not on the list of approved applications but they worked great. Now there are several cautions in the software not to close anything before finished because it can trash Cross-Over. I decided to try Handspring. I don't have the full functionality I want in Linux and this seemed like any solution to keep me from losing my data. I installed and all went great until it was time to sync. Sync did not work. I did not give up because I am still trying the KPilot and the Evolution Pilot. So it is back to the drawing board. Losing Handspring was not a big deal. My hope was to easily sync to the desktop and then try to convert myfiles to KPilot. I come out of cross over and discover I have lost all icons on my taskbar except the desktop and the KDE start applications icons. My start applications menu has been shortened to only a half dozen things. Galeon is gone as are others. I no longer have my command console to do line entries. No big deal. I remember I have accessed the command console through the drop down menus in home so I go there and pull up my DrakeMenu and restore the things off the start applications menu. Almost back to normal. I find task bar settings but I am unable to add back everything that is there. I still need to work on that. I can overcome this so I continue. It lists Photoshop 7.0 as an approved application. I think to myself that I should not do this because I really, really need to spend time in Gimp and really learn it. But since I have this split personality (oh no, where is Jeber?) thing going between work with W..... and Linux at home, I go ahead. Next thing I know it is telling me my CD drives are not configured correctly. Now I have been through many CD configurations getting my sound and everything else to work correctly. Cd's are something I have wrestled with over and over. It asks if it can fix things automatically. I should know better. I do know better but I thought to myself that it even asked permission to make changes first (try to find that in W......). I let it go ahead. Now I have no icons for my CD drives. No big deal. I go to right click on my desktop to add them back. Nothing I do lets them work. I pull up HardDrak (is this the same teacher with a few questions before jumping?) and it tells me the configuration. That still does not work. I know I need to go into command line now and run some things like Fstab and see whta it has done. I guess somehow it really messed up these settings so now I need to fix them. Will I keep Crossover after the 30 day trial? Probably. Will I be very careful when my new computer comes in so I don't goof things up? Definitely. Have I learned a lot? Silly question.
nlinecomputers
Julia,Is Quickbooks 2002 supported in Crossover? THAT is MY killer app that I need in a Linux enviorment.
Bruno
I should have digged up that post where I did tell you:1) No need to completely dump Windows !2) Try to find and get used to the Linux way of doing things, don´t go emulating every Win-application over to Linux !3) Use CrossOver Office only for the Quicken you can´t do without !You nearly had your Handspring working in Mandrake . . why did you not search further in that direction ?Some pupils are very stub****** Hope you learned something. Bruno
teacher
I don't use Quickbooks but Quicken 2002 works great! It just says Quicken on the list of supported programs. Their website is here. I bet Quickbooks would work but you can get the 30 day trial and test it yourself.
linuxdude32
Interesting to read your experiences with CrossOver Office. I mention the "Office" part because they also make a product called CrossOver Plugin for getting Quicktime, Shockwave and Windows Media files playing under Linux. Both are nice products though I couldn't get xover plugin to work with Konqueror (works fine with Mozilla). I'm surprised that IE doesn't work for you but perhaps Quicken is installing a really old version? Office 2000 came with 4. Even put a little IE icon on the desktop (I feel soooo dirty). Did you install IE through xover setup or through Quicken setup?I don't know why you had all the other problems you did -- it must be related to Mandrake, because it works flawlessly under SuSE I'm going to uninstall it soon though, I tried it because I was curious. I prefer Win4Lin for my Windows apps and VMware for trying other Linux distros.
teacher
I started to order plug in by mistake once before I realized which one I really needed. It is the flavor of IE that came out about 1.5 years ago. I have no idea what version since it came on the Quicken Deluxe 2000 Cd. The good news is I have absolutely no intention of ever using the IE. The bad part is Quicken thinks it needs it to register the product. So far, I have been able to ignore that and still do my downloads. Yes, it looks like a dirty little icon sitting on my desktop. I think I need to go remove the icon so my screen looks better!
Hi Julia,You should have a menu somewhere on your KDE or Gnome menusystem that says 'CrossOver', and within it, there shouldbe a 'OfficeSetup' choice. If you are running Mandrake, there is a bug that apparantly makes Mandrake hide theseentries.Either way, you can start this program by hand by running /opt/cxoffice/bin/cxsetupCheers,Jeremy
That was from them so it is a recognized problem with Drake. Bruno
Julia and Jason,Why don´t you people just change the ugly nasty IE icon into something less offensive ??Just a thought . . Bruno
linuxdude32
I have no idea what version since it came on the Quicken Deluxe 2000 Cd. The good news is I have absolutely no intention of ever using the IE. The bad part is Quicken thinks it needs it to register the product. So far, I have been able to ignore that and still do my downloads. In case you're required to register to continue using Quicken (The Quicken Home & Business I bought a few years ago required you register after 30 days or you couldn't continue to use it), you could try installing IE using xover (this might be why it doesn't work right) from an AOL CD - they're usually easy to come by. Just look for an IE subfolder on the CD. I guess you could register it under Windows but that'd be just way tooooo easy! :DThe disappearing menu problem is the same as in SuSE except that it never appears in the first place. I think the problem might be the same, too - which is that SuSE and Mandrake both use custom menus which are in a different location than the default KDE menus on the file structure. In SuSE, if I change from using SuSE menu to KDE menu setting, the Xover stuff magically appears! They have info about this in their FAQ. I'm one of these people that actually enjoy reading FAQs, they're better than horoscopes!
teacher
I could not even bear to bring one of those disks in my house. If I was desperate I could try installing from the XP CD or the 2000 CD or somewhere I am sure. I could even try downloading it.......I will have to think about it. Before, Quicken would not let you connect at all without registering (I thought) so I am wondering if it will go belly up after 30 days or if I can get by with ignoring it. Maybe when my new computer comes in I will install IE first and then Quicken....I would never read a horoscope (against my beliefs) but I do read an occasional FAQ. In fact, I went through all the CrossOver Office FAQs before I wrote to them. I even went through their entire help PDF file. I am trying to learn Linux as fast as I can. I can see I will probably be doing several distros on my new computer so I can get everything how I want it... Just say "Slack" and see who comes running. Bruno - I changed the icon to a tablet, called it explore and stuck it in the corner for now. Like it is in the doghouse..... Maybe I will draw a fence around it, but that would draw too much attention to it. I will just pretend there is an invisible electronic fence holding it in place.... Bruno
JuliaYou can press the litle triangle at the extreme left of your taskbar, this will move it to the side, then you put the icon under there and move the taskbar back on its place . . . . this way it´s just hidden under the bar. and if you need it you can alway reach it ! teacher
Too clever. My taskbar pushes it up out of the way when I scroll it back. It won't let me cover it!
Bruno
So they found me out at Mandrake and fixed that feature that was so handy in 8.2 !! I used to hide all kind of things there ;)To bad ! Bruno
teacher
Deleting an icon on the desktop does not delete it. Right? So why keep the icon on the desktop? Is there a good reason why I should not just make it disappear?

teacher
After much work, I have my CD drives back in working order. I know now to run if I so much as see a hint of changing these precious file configurations. I will tread very careful when the new computer arrives. Still don't know if I have to get explorer working with Quicken. It really is not critical to this computer.
Bruno
To All:Julia and I had a **** of a job getting her /etc/fstab file back to its original state ( first trying to edit, then I remembered I had a double of it that we copied over the faulty one ), this CrossOver program had messed up the file so badly that the CD drives had becaome useless. Also it changed the contents of the /mnt directory. I do not like programs that make these kind of changes to essential config files ! ( and that is putting it mildly )So you all are warned . . . teacher
The moral of the story. Have a good back up of your fstab and mtab files in your /etc directory. In fact, it is handy for a friend to have them so you can not overwrite them without realizing it. These files came to the rescue in the end. I had to reinstall the files from copies that Bruno had from some earlier work.

teacher
I was squinting and trying to see if it was a buoy or a boat in the distance. I am sorry. We don't say boat around here. It is ship. My students that fish for a living tell me boats float on ponds and ships on the ocean. See what happens when you move a Missouri girl to the beach? I think you are navigating pretty good in Linux. I don't know how you go from distro to distro. It is all I can do to learn Linux. I feel like I am getting a start on command line and how to set things up but there is so much more to learn. I wonder if it is possible to learn it all in a day? I sure am trying.

Watch out for the other guy? Hmmmm. Is there something about me I don't know? I will watch out for all the guys and gals out there. It should be rain tomorrow so I will closely watch the speed and distances. I have no desire to be scraped up off the pavement..(talk about cross-post - three ways).
