I purpose a contest of sorts

Recommended Posts

I purpose a simple contest.Choose the latest version of your favorite browser. We choose 6-10 random Websites We open them in different Tabs and and then place your favorite browser on the task bar.Let your browser (with open tabs) run in the background for 30 minutes and then snap a screen shot of task manager. Then post your favorite browser's memory foot print.Lowest memory foot print wins this non-official contest.

hmmm, but isn't the operating system used going to throw a wrench into it?Be just a good overall thing to see I guess - the more variants the better

Are we minimizing the browser window? Are we including explorer.exe in iexplore.exe totals? With plugins installed, with Firefox extensions? Will the sites use plugins (Java, Flash, etc)?

Isn't it more of a specific program memory management thing. I got that under 6MB foot print with 51 processes running, total memory in use at 569MBs with one process pegged at 99%...If you think it would give you an advatage, I'll load more programs like PS CS2 and Dreamweaver 8 up to 1GB in memory...I'm using stock IE7 beta2The browser window is minimized on the task bar.We can have just your favorite open or any range of programs loaded into memory.Just iexplore.exe *32 for me.The sites can use whatever you want to test on... no plugins or as many as you want. Awfully quite out there...Time to sweeten the deal...I'll add a text line to my SIG that your favorite browser kicked my favorite browsers tush in our informal contest. I'll eat crow for 30 days! How can you resist? We all talk the talk with our favorite browsers... how about we walk the walk? Edited by Marsden11

This IE v. FF (MS v. open source also) thing with a few of the members is really turning me off to this forum. This isn't simple discussion anymore. It's a couple of zealots that can't see the other side of the story.

'twas not aimed at you, Fran.I mean in general. There are those, like you, Fran, and hopefully I fall into this cetegory too, that do have civil discussions about our browsers and OS's (I'm personally partial to FF and XP Pro) but to post derogatory pix in your sigs and make a show of zealous verbal (typing) diarrhea is way overboard and detracts from helpful discussions. Why can't it just be known that one will shine better than the other in some areas while lagging behind in others. This thread is a perfect example.

whew, had me worried there for a minute and thanks tbird. :)I agree, you would definitely fit in with that category. It is most important to have civil discussions about our browsers and OS's. ;)

People debate sport teams, political parties, men, women, etc all the time. It's human nature I guess. I don't see anything wrong with the current debate over browser stats. People have had biased sigs here for sometime. Noone says anything about all the Firefox sigs and avatars. It appears that MS bashing is OK, but support not so much. The attitude of the forums is clearly stated here: http://forums.scotsnewsletter.com/index.ph...ndpost&p=149677

People are going to use what they like best. Right now I am on Firefox, running Vista. Sometimes I am on Xp running Firefox or Vista running IE 7.0, Or on a Linux Distro running Opera. I also have Flock and IE 6.0.So what if Firefox or Opear is faster or IE 7 is faster, what are we to do with all of those extra milliseconds of time difference. The diference in speed is neglible, some say they have problems with memory in Firefox, I do not on any platform. It could be the extensions thedy are using.Well that is my rant for today-Hapy Browsing.

I don't get what testing beta browsers in a beta OS proves. Really, I don't get what testing this at all proves, but testing unfinished browsers and/or unfinshed operating systems (insofar as either can ever be "finished") proves even less.

The Off By One web browser "may be the world's smallest and fastest web browser with full HTML 3.2 support. It is a completely self-contained, stand-alone 1.2 MB application with no dependencies on any other browser or browser component. For Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows NT, Windows 2000 and Windows XP.Now, with a tabbed browsing interface."The 35Mb Firefox was running simultaneously.

Since I can't run IE7, I selected FF 1.5.0.3 and Opera 8.5FF with 10 tabs, 6 that Temmu mentioned and 4 others thrown in for good measure is using 73,340K. Opera running a bit shorter, timewise and having 9 windows open is using 69,052K.Is this gonna convince me to change my browser? HAH! Will I install XP so I can try IE7? HAH!Is this little p****** contest a waste of time? probably. People are very entrenched in their choice of software. Rarely do they want to change unless a) something breaks b ) the software doesn't do something that they need c) the cost appears too high for the perceived value of the product d) the software won't work with the current OS or certain hardwareI started closing tabs to see what would happen. It does give back the memory. I droped to 46,000K. Then I shut down completely and fired it up again. My home page is MyWay and I have a script running. When it starts up, it starts at 29,000K. I never had any idea of the numbers because I never bothered looking. Now I'm curious as to how little is used if the start page is blank. Edited by zlim
