Open Letter to SFNL Forums ...

Scot,A few years ago, I accidentally heard Leo LaPorte mention Fred Langa, on ZDTV's "Call for Help"; (now TechTV, with Chris Pirillo taking Leo's place). I then went on-line and searched for his website, subscribed to his newsletter, after a few issues, paid for the special version - thought: how could anyone ask for more?In a few of these newsletters, he mentioned Scot (can't recall exact dates), and off again to find a web address, subscribe, enjoy, and think...there is more. Somewhat different style, format, viewpoints, et. al., but going in the same general direction: to make the internet experience informative, enjoyable, safe, competent, understandable for all experience levels, and worthwhile. I applaud and recommend you both, in the very highest regard. You have both instructed me to the point, where I can sometimes help others, which I feel is most important of all...thank you.The introduction above, leads to my purpose for writing this: I wish to thank you sincerely for your work, ambition, contributions, and creation of this forum. To me, (and I'm sure many others), but I can only speak for myself, you have brought forth an integral part of the "on-line experience". This forum has got to be the finest...it is an intrinsic meld of form, function, members and moderators; woven with the threads of courtesy, understanding, caring, and desire to help one and all - new and established, experienced and novice. You have chosen moderators that complement your direction, perfectly - though they approach situations from their own perspectives...as they should. Members of forums come and go, but here, I observe, they remain, and look forward to the time they are able to visit. That says it all; I could only hope my limited control of the English language, has made my thoughts comprehendable.Thank you, Scot, moderators, and members of the "finest of forums".(Please excuse grammatical and punctuation errors). In Peace, quint

Hi Quint,That's very nice of you for writing this letter. I didn't wish to reply to this thread much because it is meant for Scot, but just to be clear. Chris Pirillo has left Call For Help since March, and he has no plans going back to TechTV in the future. Now it is Leo that's taking over the show.. Chris said that I should be expected to see him on another network, which I am not sure what it is, but we shall see.A few years ago, my dad got some promotion and received WinMag for free for awhile, so I started to read and like it very much afterward. Very soon, I got myself with a hotmail account and started receiving newsletter from Scot, Serdar, Karen, and etc.. I still do up to this date.

I come from the days of subscribing to the magazine. I agree that all the moderators and Scot are doing a wonderful job. I quit doing forums some time back and it took two times in the newsletter to get me here. I think I am here to stay now.

I'm a little newer to the bunch of ex-WinMaggers... When I bought my computer in summer of 2k and put Win2k Pro on it, I went searching for any and all info I could find about the OS... Found Winmag and Serdar's newsletter... Migrated quickly to Scot/Karen/Fred and have stayed subscribed to all 4 ever since... Don't know how I missed the forum info in the March newsletter, but found it in the April one and have been stuck here ever since!

Well, I'm not going to be much help on the marketing side...I don't remember how I got here (seriously).I know that I have watched forums many times, sometimes waking up in front of my monitor (seriously).Jumping aboard this one was a function of the Newsletter, and who I thought it would draw. Scot and the Mods have done a great job, and my hat's off to them (grab some sunglasses; there might be a little glare). To your new adventure, Scot!

I too am from the old WinMag crew of readers. I really missed WinMag very much and was so excited to find Fred Langa and Mike Elgan online and have enjoyed them for quite a while. Then I found that Scot also had a newsletter, so I subscribed and have thoroughly enjoyed it.Soon after I also found Serdar Yegulalp, Jim Powell, Karen Kenworthy, Jason Levine, John Woram online as well!It is like old home week being able to enjoy the WinMag writers again. I came to SFNL Forums in March from Scot's mention of it in the newsletter like many folks, and have been very happy and proud to be a part of Scot's Forums. Thank you Scot for giving us all a great place to hang out, help folks, get help, learn and enjoy each other's company! :D

Aw, shucks [kicking rock with toe]. Thanks, Quint. It really means a lot to hear those things, and you expressed yourself beautifully.A lot of good folks were mentioned in this thread and I want to provide links to them right here in case you'd like to check them out. So, in no particular order:Serdar Yegulalp's Win2K Power Users:http://www.win2kpowerusers.com/James Powell's The Office Letter:http://www.officeletter.com/Mike Elgan's Mike's List:http://www.mikeslist.com/Dave Methvin's and Martin Heller's PC Pitstop:http://www.pcpitstop.com/John Woram:http://www.woram.com/Karen Kenworthy's PowerTools:http://www.karenware.com/Jason Levine's Toolbox:http://www.jasons-toolbox.com/Jason Levine's PC Q&A:http://www.pcqanda.com/Fred Langa's LangaLetter:http://www.langa.com/Everyone of the above folks worked at WinMag. Many others were part of the crew too, but I don't think I missed anyone who is offering free content on the Internet.Chris Pirillo has also been a long-time friend of WinMag, Windows Insider, and Scot's Newsletter. Chris and I have been reading each other's stuff since the mid 1990s, and have corresponded many times over the years. Also, Thunder is right that Chris left TechTV a while back. http://www.lockergnome.com/You might also like Woody Leonhard's W.O.W. and W.W.W. and other newsletters:http://www.woodyswatch.com/Woody and I go back a long ways. I edited his first column at PC/Computing magazine 10 years ago, and my first book, The Underground Guide to Windows 95, was published as part of Woody's "Underground Guide" series. Woody is knowledgeable about many things, but he is especially knowledgeable about Microsoft Office.-- Scot

I agree with Quint! This is a great place and everyone involved deserves a pat on the back.

*Gasp* I thought he was comming back! I figured he was just away preparing for Gnomedex or something! Not to change the subject or anything, but does anyone know why he left? Thanks Scot for posting all those links! That's a huge time saver!

There seems to be an air of mystery as to why Chris left (and he has left the show) and what his plans are. There are several posts about this in the LG forums if you want to check them out. But no enlightenment yet.

Chris wrote me about it recently, he sounded rueful, but he didn't, of course, explain why. So I don't know either. Frankly, I think it's a good change for him. I'm not dissing TechTV, but I'm not sure the format was as good for Chris as Chris is good. He may do better elsewhere.-- Scot

Fran! Are you emplying that the emperor has no clothes?!!!I had all of the Lockergnome stuff coming in...I even joined the forum for a short time, and I found the whole thing to be a waste of my time! Now, if I was trying to make a living from the Net, I truly believe it would be a different story, but I'm just a Jail Nurse, interested in this cyberworld and in making my box run. I became hugely bored with the whole Gnome thing.By the way, I didn't go to Des Moines.
