  1. http://opensource.com/life/14/2/how-to-get-teenage-girls-open-source Make money and have fun in open source (2014) Women are under represented in the computing world so I thought I would start a thread dedicated to women. The above article is a good read.

    Ubunchu!

Surfin as you do, I chanced upon this titbit, https://openlibra.com/en/collection/search/category/ubunchu_spanish_magazine A magna all about Ubuntu. How quaint, but only five episodes --- hmmmm there must be more. A search threw up this very interesting article about Ubuntu in popular culture media. 2004 to 20.04 LTS: Ubuntu in popular culture Interesting but not that much information on ubunchu. Maybe Wikipedia can help, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubunchu! Plenty of information but no more episodes to read. Only one of the three links at the bottom of the site was any use, English translations (chapters 9-14) Ah ha this site has episodes from 9 to 14 and a link to the first eight found at the original translation site. https://gitlab.com/ubunchu-translators/ubunchu At this site you can download one .pdf file with episodes 1 to 8 in English and Japanese. I use GV for reading PDF's. As to translating episode 15 and the extras it seems that there is some hope as there is still interest as of 2021 at a ubunchu translation site, https://groups.google.com/g/ubunchu-translators/c/q_uISc4czYo So I can get to read chapters 1 to 14 but only with some fiddling around. Can I find a way to easily do this ? Maybe this site will solve the problem, https://archive.org/details/ubunchu-ch-1-11/page/n1/mode/2up So so close but no banana. Only 11 chapters. Maybe someone will upload the missing three one day. Finally one site to view all chapters You do have to scroll through the chapter which is a bit of a pain on a normal monitor. Luckily for me with one click I can alter my monitor to suit such a task. So there you are folks yet another bit of obscure penguin lore. Happy reading folks. Oh yes if you do decide to read the manga then this tip will be useful.
  3. How open source is revitalizing the payphone Neat project.
  4. Facebook, Not Microsoft, Is the Main Threat to Open Source Facebook scares the h3ll out of me. The title of this article is only part of what it discusses. The more frightening part is how FB enables influencing the whole fabric of society with disinformation, and now they are proposing more privacy through encryption which not only makes it easier for bad actors to communicate but abrogates FB's responsibility of governing evil content on the platform (such as terrorist groups) as FB themselves won't be able to access it. Be sure to read that article's comments as they are pertinent and insightful, particularly Doc Searls' one. A prime example of the threat is how Avaaz mounted a massive campaign to take down thousands of "fake news" FB groups who were attempting to influence the recent EU elections similar to what happened in the last US elections. This article at Avaaz is essential reading: We did it - Europe resists!

    FreedomBox

With the impending threat of the EU Copyright Directive, it has become more important to control your own internet use rather than leaving it in the hands of mega-corporations and governments. Enter FreedomBox. This little private server system based on a board such as RaspberryPi https://freedomboxfoundation.org/ https://freedombox.org/ You can build and set up your own or buy a ready-to-go one for €82 It was hard to decide where to put this. Hardware? Security? I figured since it's open source, most of the interested readers would be in BATL.
  6. Introducing Thelio: A new desktop computer from System76 https://system76.com/desktops Windows -----------------only buy them if they are double glazed
  7. Input Club's mechanical keyboards aren't just about producing exceptional products. They're also proof that open source can solve any problem. More about the Input Club https://input.club/product/ This is a full size keyboard they have on offer, well more of a condensed full size, https://kono.store/products/kira-mechanical-keyboard However this is the keyboard that caught my eye and am seriously thinking of buying one, https://input.club/k-type/ They also do a dinky White Fox keyboard and a luverly wooden carry case for it. Too small for my digits and the case is sold out.
  8. Mycroft Mark II: The Open Source Answer to Amazon Echo and Google Home That Doesn’t Spy on You The Kickstarter campaign, https://www.kickstarter.com/project...t-mark-ii-the-open-voice-assistant?ref=7cauwu The current Indiegogo campaign, https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/mycroft-mark-ii-the-open-voice-assistant#/ For those with a 3D printer, https://mycroft.ai/ The Mycroft home page contains more information, A list of current "SKILLS" that Mycroft can do. https://github.com/MycroftAI/mycroft-skills/blob/master/README.md#community-contributed-skill-list I like the sound of Mycroft. Even at this early stage it looks to have some neat and useful skills.

    Peng Pod open source tablet

http://www.linuxbsdos.com/2013/02/15/what-about-the-pengpod/ http://shop.pengpod.com/ Neat. So for $160'ish you get the top of the range PengPod with a case and keyboard and 32 Gb of storage. You can use Android or GNU/Linux. Sounds like a winner to me.

  13. :th_wave2: GIMP on OS X Our own sunrat posted about this in ATL here. Apparently it was released on may 3, 2012, but at the time it was posted on GIMP.org, the Mac OS X version wasn't up yet. But now: Now the brand new GIMP 2.8 is also available for Mac OS X (Snow Leopard and Lion)! Finally GIMP 2.8 is here (GIMPUsers.com) The GIMP.org Downloads page still thought it was 2.6 only for Macs, but when I went to GIMP on OS X, the new GIMP 2.8 was available !!! :th_wave2:
