The development of the next version of Jollix, a Gentoo-based live CD with focus on games and multimedia, is under way: "Jollix 0.3 beta test starts today. New features: Linux kernel 2.6.5; kudzu hardware detection; XOrg-X11 6.7.0; KDE 3.2.2; KVIRC 3.0 Final; WLAN and bluetooth support." New installation documentation in English has also been released; see Installing Jollix for information about how to install Jollix on hard disk. Jollix 0.3-bet is available for download from here: jollix-0.3.beta2.i686.iso (530MB).

Install Guide from LiveCD

This could be an easier way to get Gentoo on a system - will have to download and see how the LiveCD is - kinda concerned with how much is english.

jollix lang=us

This could be a great thing!

Let us know what your experiences are with Jollix Kelly . . . . smile.gif
( Am curious to know if it is as jolly as the name would make you think wink.gif )

I have always liked jollix as a live CD. I have a copy of a version from last summer around here somewhere. Don't worry about English. I don't remember any lanugage problems whatsoever. wink.gif

I liked the LiveCD too, but thought there was language problems, could be thinking of a different distro too. Maybe this weekend I can get to it.
Bruno
This is jolly nice: Jollix !!

Just installed it to HD ( replaced Overclockix wink.gif ) with the howto of JetBlackz: http://simplylinux.punted.net/Installingjollix.html . . . good instructions, easy to follow . . . . . Looks brilliant !

ohmy.gif beat me to it

how is the language Bruno, pretty much all English?
Bruno
Hi Kelly,

It is 100% English if you follow the guidelines of Jet . . . . . no problem !

Using Emerge

With a big thank you to Jet Blackz !

You know you are in the land of gentoo when you learn how to use emerge! It really is quite simple. Just take your time and be exact!

Julia smile.gif
Bruno
Thanks for the encouragement Teach ! . . . . I am planning the "configuring Jollix" tonight wink.gif biggrin.gif

If I downlaod this, I will have to get another distro CD folder!!

*grumbles about the high price of folders as he heads to the store*

I have downloaded this one. Having a few minor problems with it.

1. I can not find the /etc/X11/XF86Config file. It does not seem to exist to edit it.
2. My changes to the keyboard are not staying. I keep needing to change it to US.
3. I have not yet changed the mouse to scroll since I can not find the file!

Will continue to work on this a bit.

Julia smile.gif
Bruno
Hi Julia,

The keyboard thing is simple: in the KDE Control center there are 2 ( or 3 ) lay-outs set up . . just remove the other two and leave the US one. then log out and log back in again . . . . . . ( I changed it to US-int )

The XF86Config file is not there because it uses X.org and not XFree ( remember the licensing issue ? )

cool.gif Bruno
teacher
Well, it looks like I got the keyboard to stay. Now I am baffled as to why it will not let me log in as ¨su¨ since it always tells me the password is wrong. I can go back and log in as root but can not do su.

The directions from Jet Blackz' indicate it has the XF86. I am going to go back and look at the xorg.conf file and see what I can change there. Then I will do the emerge to get my Evolution and Galeon installed.

Julia smile.gif
teacher
Here it the thing to try:

#nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf

In here you will find the lines to key to make the mouse scroll as well as your keyboard configuration.

Julia smile.gif
Bruno
Yep that worked . . mouse is scrolling now . . . .

But I am glad I made a backup of that file before changing it . . . the first time X did not want to start after the changes I made biggrin.gif . . So I could restore the backup and simply repalce the mouse section with the one Jet provided ( copy an paste ) . . . and the Modline for the screen resolution . . . wink.gif

Logging out and back in is not enough to restart X . . you have to reboot !

cool.gif Bruno

PS: I hate Nano . . . used Vi biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Brings back memory of windows enough to make me cry. crying.gif

Well nice to see the pros have gone before me so shouldn't be too difficult for me to get it up and running.

So Bruno and Julia what's the verdict on this distro?
Bruno
LOL . . Johann . . . it is absolutely nice, but not nice enough to convince me that Gentoo is the ticket . . . never liked Gentoo, and Jollix is just showing me I should change my mind on that ! . . . . . I replaced Overclockix with Jollix, and tomorrow I might change it back to Overclockix because that one was far more spectecular ! biggrin.gif

It was fun trying this alternative install method though wink.gif

cool.gif Bruno

It is a nice distro. This is a much simpler and quicker install than doing the full Gentoo from stages. I like the fact that my computer boots much faster with it. I have added it to my Lilo (ignored the steps for Grub) and will keep it around for a while. Some of the quirks I have had will probably be solved by rebooting. I have been in and out a time or two but not since I finished the install. When I installed Gentoo before it was with the old kernel and KDE so it is nice to have it so quickly with the newer kernel.

Julia smile.gif

No joy for me tried to boot the live CD and got the infamous AGPGART module error that has become common with the 2.6 kernel and my i810 onboard videocard will probably have to search for a cheatcode of some sort. sad.gif

Edit:where can I find cheatcodes hmm.gif
Bruno
Hi Johann

Does F2 not give any cheatcodes ?? ( linux noagp ? )

cool.gif Bruno
teacher
You will probably have to go towards the end of this document: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-x86-install.xml and look for an answer. When printed out there are about 27 pages here and on page 16 of mine it has a section for hardware-specific ebuilds and on page 26 it has for "uncommon" hardware. I did not see yours in a quick glance. Otherwise, they do have a forum you can check.

Some codes include:
nofb
smp
acpi
memtest
doataraid
dofirewire
dokeymap
dopcmcia
doscsi
noapm
nodetect
nodhcp
nohotplug
noraid
nousb
ide=nodma
cdcache

If those do not work F2 and F3 give you help screens.

Gentoo has an agpgart cheatcode but jollix doesn't at least according to the list of cheatcodes you get when you press F2.I tried it anyway but didn't seem to have any effect anyway maybe I have to configure X but that I'll have to figure out how to do.

Edit X.org suggests trying X -configure that really didn't help anyway not going to expend too much energy on this one.

#nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf

This would be the place to look to configure X. Of course you can try to use Vi instead of nano (mine did not want to let me edit and save in vi!).

I finally got around to trying this - and I love it - but for the first time ever I have sound problems - I get a high squealing sound from the speakers. Unfortunately if you go to the jollix forum it is all German sad.gif Every distro has always like my soundblaster card. I would hate to install it to only find out it can't be fixed.

There is a english discussion section to the very bottom of the forums might be worth a try. wink.gif

hmmmm thanks for the info - didn't see anything about sound, but I'm sure it can be easily solved if every other distro likes it.
teacher
You have changed your install to English right? Are you using KDE? If so, try going to the KDE center and looking at your hardware to see if your sound is correctly identified. If you want a forum in English, go to the Gentoo forums as it is basically a Gentoo distro once it is installed. http://forums.gentoo.org/ should take you right to their forum. I have not had to ask any questions there so I don't know how responsive they are but it is worth a shot. First though, take a look at your sound and see if it is configured correctly. I have had that happen to my sound once but I can't remember which distro it was at the time.
