In PCLos 9.1 and so far not having any luck getting the printer to work ,, it is an hpdeskjet 940c and it works in md2005le and in xp....
teacher
Have you double checked to make sure you did not knock a cable loose? It should not be any different than md2005!
longgone
the connection is fine.............. the problem is something to do with cups .................
teacher
Cups should be exactly the same. How are you accessing it?
longgone
configure > kde > periphals > printers .............. connection to cups server failed ...
Bruno
Use the PCLos Control Center . . . Like you use the MCC in Drake smile.gif

"could not install the cups printing system" ... was the response I got using the PCLinuxOS control center > hardware > configure printer ......... is there a possibility that it was not even installed during the installation of the OS to the HDD ???
teacher
That is a very real possibility. In fact, if it had detected yoru printer, it should have installed it automatically. That is why I questioned the cable! I would reinstall after checking the cable and making sure the printer is powered on.

According to synaptic, there are 5 pkgs for CUPS, 3 of which are installed. The two that are not should not affect my set-up, one is for developement, the other for serial installation, I am on a parallel port. Once again, the connection is fine as I have printed a test page in MD2005LE ..........................

I'll have a closer look later; I'm on my way out. I get an error message about CUPs and yet I can print in PCLos 9.1 using my networked HP printer.
I have to find my configuration notes to see what I did.

If I run the printer thru PCLinux OS Control Center, I get a CUPs error. When I Open the KDE Control Cener, I used the printer wizard. I clicked the add button and I think that's how I got the wizard. Since my printer is networked, I just kept trying settings IPs and ports until I got the right combo. (I used the same method to quickly set up the printer in my Live Mephos yesterday so I could use Ksnapshot).
At the bottom of my KDE printer window it indicates that it is currently using CUPs so I don't know why the other control center gives the error.
longgone
whichever control center I use makes no difference ,, I get the same response (mentioned earlier) from either one..
teacher
Since it is an hp, you have cups installed and the hardware is ok that leaves hp specific files. I have these hp files installed:

foomatic-db-hpijs
hplip
hplip-hpijs
hplip=hpijs-ppds
hplip-modeal-data
hpoj
libhpip0
printer-filters

Do you have those installed?
longgone
I'll check to see ....
longgone
all listed items are checked ....
teacher
I don't know what to tell you at this point. If you have everything installed, and it is hooked up correctly then the only reason it should not work is a corrupt file. But you have tried reinstalling the program before.....
Bruno
Maybe re-installing cups would help ?? ( but first remove all the config of the printer you tried to add )

Not sure how to do an un-install of cups ... unless it is just a matter of rm -rf cups ...didn't get anything installed as far as printers go so that should not be a problem ...
zlim
I have 3 cups files listed in 9.1.
cups 1.1.23-14tex
cups common 1.1.23-14tex
cups drivers 10.2-2tex (there is an updat 10.2-3tex but since it is working in PCLos and Mephis, I don't want to change anything).

Go to synaptic. Right click and check remove completely. smile.gif

Removed cups "complete removal", it had several other dependencies that went with it. Rebooted and re-installed 2 of the 3 pkgs that Liz listed ,, the .. "cups common" pkg was still installed which leads me to believe that "complete removal" is not quite "complete" ...... anyway ... went to PCLinuxOS control center, selected hardware, selected printer, and waited and waited, and 20 minutes later came to the conclusion that even though it said it was installing .... it was lying to me ... well whats next on the POA ....
zlim
What happens if you try to install it thru the KDE Control Center instead? Use add instead of printer, I think and let the wizard help.

Dale,

You can do

CODE
# printerdrake

to see what is happening. wink.gif
longgone
It won't install it ... "unable to print file client error not found" ... that is the response I get when I try to print a test message .....

Hi Dale . . . in the beginning of this thread you got the above error message in the PCLos Control Center . . . . . . . Is this still the case now with the new packages ??

Second question: are you fully up-to-date ???

cool.gif Bruno
longgone
Bruno...............

nope ... look about 3 posts back ,, it says it's installing but nothing happens ..... as far as I know it's as up to date as can be unless something new has come out in the last few hours ... and "printerdrake" just tells me "please wait...installing ....... but it doesn't do it ...
Bruno

When printerdrake says "please wait...installing ...." are you online at that moment ?? Because it might have to get packages from the net at that point . . .
If not, please remove the printer in the MCC and get online and add it again . . .

MCC ????? ... or PCLinuxOS CC

Bruno,,,,,,

We have a printer ... clap.gif clap.gif ..... however ,,, whistling.gif blushing.gif blushing.gif ... I must offer my humble apologies to everyone who helped on this thread .... it would not have gone on as long as it did if I had been more patient. I was unaware of how long it was going to take for the entire pkg installation (45 minutes) and I was cutting it off after 10 minutes or so...... BUT now it is installed ........

I thank all for their input/help ........ now for audio and video(DVD's).....
