History and General Information
For those new to the alternative world that is Mozilla, here is a short description of each of the apps that are linked here: Mozilla is the open-source "child" of Netscape. Netscape released the source code to the public, called it Mozilla, and work began. It is a suite of applications: A web browser (Navigator), Mail & News reader (Mail/News), HTML Editor (Composer), IRC chat client (Chatzilla), Address Book and more. If you used Netscape, but dropped it after the 4.x series, then look again. A lot has changed since then. (Netscape 7.2 is simply Mozilla 1.7(.3, I think) that was taken, had a few things added to it (such as AIM and the Netscape artwork) and called Netscape.). Update - July 24, 2005: Mozilla, the Suite, is dead. Officially renamed to "SeaMonkey", formerly the codename, the Mozilla Suite now lives on only through official updates to the 1.7.x product--only security and stability ones, at that. More info on SeaMonkey is available here. Mozilla Firefox is the "child" of Mozilla (or the "grandchild" of Netscape Mozilla Thunderbird is the brother of Firefox, in that it is Mozilla's Mail & News Editor stripped out of the suite and released by itself. Like Firefox, a lot of work has gone into improving the User Interface, and new features are being implemented and polished. Maturing very quickly, Thunderbird is nearing a 1.0 release of its own and gets better all the time. Like Firefox, Thunderbird is the future of Mozilla (making a switch from one giant app to a bunch of smaller ones working together) (Other projects have been split off and are now being developed separately also; Mozilla Calendar is being developed as Sunbird; Mozilla Composer is being developed for Linspire (although available for everyone) as Nvu (pronounced "N View"); and the IRC client is developed as ChatZilla. -------------------- |

SeaMonkey (Mozilla Suite)
Current Release(s): Stable: 1.0.5 Development: nightly builds The SeaMonkey Wiki Page - on wiki.mozilla.org. You can find information about SeaMonkey here. The Official Homepage of SeaMonkey MozillaZine - News about Mozilla, with some good information MozillaNews - Another Mozilla News site (who would have figured from the name? SeaMonkey forums @ MozillaZine -- good for questions you can't answer Mozilla's Roadmap - Where Mozilla is headed. This document now focuses more on the "overall" picture more than SeaMonkey itself. Brendan Eich's Roadmap blog - Mozilla.org's Staff list says: "Brendan is responsible for architecture and the technical direction of Mozilla." -- So his blog is a good place to go for technical information about the direction of Mozilla. Mozilla Suite Home Page -- This is the homepage for the Mozilla Suite. Mozilla 1.7.13 - Former Stable release Note: The mozilla foundation/corporation have stopped supporting the Mozilla Suite. 1.7.x releases are security updates published until the official support ceases completely. The community has begun maintaining the code and releasing new versions under the name "SeaMonkey". They have released version 1.0, and from now on those releases are the ones I will be tracking here. -------------------- |

News Archive:
November 9, 2004 - Firefox 1.0 Released!!! January 31, 2005 - Bits and bytes - The Firefox 2.0 Roadmap was updated recently by Ben Goodger, Project Lead. It turns out March was too optimistic for a 1.1 release. A "Developer Preview" (formerly known as "alpha") will come in March, followed by a "Preview Release" ("beta") in April, with 1.1 coming sometime in June. Remember, these dates are rough estimates. - Ben Goodger and Darin Fisher, both important Mozilla hackers, have been hired by the Google, Inc. They will continue to work on Firefox/Mozilla. - It's possible we will see a Firefox 1.0.1 and/or a Thunderbird 1.0.1 before respective 1.1 releases--if a security/stability issue comes up; such a release would be built off of the 1.0 release tag--no changes would break gecko compatibility - A note on the gecko compatibility remark: Firefox 1.0, Thunderbird 1.0 and Mozilla 1.7.5 are considered equivalent in terms of Gecko version. This means that if you test a webpage in Firefox 1.0, you can be certain it will work exactly the same in Mozilla 1.7.5; a 1.0.1 release wouldn't change that certainty March 8, 2005 - Update - The Sunbird team has released 0.2 - Firefox 1.0.1 has been released, fixing about 17 security issues A corresponding Thunderbird 1.0.1 is expected (as is Mozilla 1.7.6) soon - N|Vu is approaching 1.0 pretty quickly - We might not see a Mozilla 1.8 or any further "official" Suite releases. Stay tuned. March 26, 2005 - News! - Releases all over the place! Firefox, Thunderbird and Mozilla all released security updates, and all users are encouraged to update. - Nvu, from Daniel Glazman, is VERY quickly reaching 1.0, and it looks fabulous. I expect him to also begin giving his changes back to mozilla.org CVS after his 1.0 release. - Mozilla.org Drivers announced that mozilla.org will no longer release Mozilla Suite updates. They have promised to maintain the 1.7.x branch for security updates, but there will be no releases of Mozilla 1.8 or onward. April 16, 2005 - Update - First off, security releases. Firefox 1.0.3 and Mozilla 1.7.7 are now out. The Known Vulnerabilities page has been updated, with the 9 security fixes. - Nvu has reached 1.0 Preview Release status. Chatzilla is up to 0.9.68a. Camino is at 0.8.3. - I've rearranged some of the ordering of the items, to reflect what is "official" and what isn't. May 12, 2005 - Mozilla Firefox 1.0.4 has been released, a security update. - Mozilla 1.7.8 has also been released (to coincide with Fx 1.0.4) June 30, 2005 - Nvu 1.0 released July 24, 2005 Several updates I had lagged behind on: - Updated Firefox and Thunderbird to 1.0.6, Mozilla Suite to 1.7.10, Camino-dev to 0.9a2 - Changed URL for Seamonkey to a more "official" one September 19, 2005 Minor updates again, including fixing the SeaMonkey url, and updating the Camino version (the 0.9 release has been skipped, and it's gone straight to the 1.0 series) January 4, 2006 Updates in all areas, as releases have happened (including Firefox 1.5!) for all products that I did not report January 17, 2006 Thunderbird 1.5 February 14, 2006 Firefox 1.5.0.1, Camino and SeaMonkey 1.0 releases, point update for Chatzilla. -------------------- |
