I think there should be a difference noted between "used by most" and "most popular". I'm pretty sure I am safe in saying that GNOME is the default install UI for the majority of linux devos.

Semantics, eh? Now you're getting just too complicated for this old penguin. ;)

The end of KDE? Maybe some people hope so, but I doubt it.

I just hope his leaving won't adversely affect Dolphin -- he was the guy behind it. I use different DEs/WMs on different days, and I like 'em all, but Dolphin is my preferred file manager no matter which environment I happen to be using.

I agree.

I don't think there is a right or wrong GUI to use for Linux. It sometimes depends on the venue (desktop, laptop, netbook, tablet).

I like KDE but Gnome has gotten better in recent years but they are not the only ones out there by a long shot.

LXDE and xfce are great too as are many others. Some even love Unity. Just depends on personal preference and need.

The beauty of Linux is the diversity of the choices.

@Eric if you haven't tried out Mageia 2 you might want to take a look at its KDE implementation. It has very much a classic simple KDE feel with less of the KIckoff/Rosa desktop/plasmoid stuff you see in Mandriva or SUSE.
I had a bit of trouble adding applications launchers to the bottom panel but I eventually figured it out. You have to unlock the launchers then when you get the application running you can right click on its icon in the panel and check "leave icon when not running" and it'll stick there. Bizarre but at least you can do it.
Never thought I'd say this but given a choice between Mageia 2 KDE 4 or Gnome 3 I'd take KDE.

I agree with you Fran and that's why I think Windows 8 is headed for trouble - trying to make all its users work the same way regardless of the hardware they have.
I am certainly no fan of the basic Gnome 3 shell but Linux Mint is doing a great job of building the Cinnamon desktop on top of it.

I agree about Windows 8. Will be big trouble for desktop users and many laptop users too.

My wife is a real technophobe, She used Windows XP happily for years, and I've had few problems getting her used to Xubuntu or Linux Mint. She seems to have made a successful adaptation to Windows 7. But looking at Windows 8 made me shudder, so I quickly decided to get a new machine before Windows 7 disappears. Some things just aren't worth the aggravation.

i started with kde, and originally thought gnome not to be for the true believers.
however,
since the interesting oops with kde last year, i would have said then, that kde was going down, fast.

1. i no longer think kde is going away. far from it.
2. i have (through use) discovered gnome to be a fine de.

i've also used fluxbox, a minimalists approach to desk-topping.

I'm sure both Gnome and KDE are here to stay, because both are extremely customizable and either the distro packager or the end user can eliminate the excessive stuff. Mageia has done this with KDE and Linux Mint with Gnome.
I have to say that the Gnome developers have done a better job mucking things up with Gnome 3 than the KDE gurus did with KDE 4. And I say this as a long time Gnomie. I found basic Gnome 3 to be an ugly experience, but have been rescued by Linux Mint Cinnamon.

If I recall I started with Mandrake 6 or 7 and KDE I went to Gnome a short time later and prefer it over KDE I used SuSE versions starting with a version 4 and used the commercial versions of Suse until I believe it was 10.1 Had a major crash and lost everything so Ubuntu had just came out and used it until a couple of years ago. Use mostly Windows 7 Now but still dabble a bit with Linux. I will stick with Gnome, Cinnimon and Xfce.
