On last update which was kind of big because I have been bad and have not updated the laptop in over 2 weeks, my WiFi quite working.  I tried a magnitude of things with no luck.  So I re-imaged the partition with my last created image and attempted even more updates.  All went well except for Haskell.  I have not rebooted yet (which I need to because there was a kernal update)  Haskell has nothing to do with WiFi that I can see.  This is the errors I received while doing updates.

I received the same errors the last time I updated prior to re-imaging due to WiFi not working.  About to reboot now and see what happens.  ;)

Any opinions, the desktop is completely updated and I have had no issues with WiFi on that.  Strange. ;)

Hmmm sounds familiar....

From my reply:

I had pretty much the same errors this morning and kept messing around installing the packages it was complaining about and such. I finally got it fixed with no errors using:

# pacman -Sy haskell-containers haskell-directory haskell-unix ghc haskell-mtl haskell-utf8-string

Well sure enough, after updates, no WiFi.  The external Alpha Network dongle stays solid blue and if I ifconfig wlan1 up I get no device available???

Strange one.  My desktop set up is the same as my laptop and no issues with the desktop.

Have you tried setting up the device again? https://wiki.archlin...tl8187_wireless

Also, check if the module is loaded:

I recall something similar happening ages ago. Turned out the update had changed the wireless device from wlan1 to wlan0. I just redid the setup/config and it worked again.

The variant of Alpha Network dongle I am using on the laptop is the Wireless N version
When I run lsusb | grep it comes up with
148:3070 Ralink Tchnology, Corp. RT2870/RT3070 Wireless Adapter

When I run
lsmod | grep rt2870 or rt3070, or rt2870/rt3070

I get nothing, just goes back to the prompt.  No message stating it's loaded or not.
Something tells me an update wiped out this driver and I am going to have to reload it.  ;)

My Jim had to blacklist the default driver I think before it would run the ralink one. If I am remembering correctly which one he had to do that with.

I do, that one is currently on the desk top.  In the morning I may swap them out to see what happens.  But I am pretty sure it would be just as easy to reload the drivers for the rtl2870 rtl3070.  My only guess is the last kernel update removed the driver because this driver has been included in the kernel ever sense I started using this dongle.

It may be a bit tedious but taking a backup of the system befor doing a update can be a life saver. Of course some folk do not belive in backups at all.   :th_run-around-smiley:

Well the thing is, I normally do and I kicked myself for not doing so.  I have been busy with so many other things lately that I have been neglected in "MY" computer time.  My last backup was in May and that is what I re-imaged with.  WiFi worked fine with the re-image.  Hopefully this weekend, I can start troubleshooting more indepth.

I'm guessing this is in Arch. However the Debian wikistates the Ralink staging driver was removed as of kernel 3.0, and requires the installation of firmware-ralink and possibly blacklisting another driver. Not sure if it's relevant but it could be worth quickly scanning that page.

Apparently the old driver was replaced by the rt2800usb kernel module. You still need non-free firmware. In Debian you should just have to install firmware-ralink and then plug the device in, the module should automatically load.
I didn't find Arch-specific info, but I'd hazard a guess something similar would need to be done. I'm sure the Archies on this forum may know where to look.

That's why I like automatic backups with rsync/crontab. I do full system backups with Clonezilla or partimage, but even if I forget, cron doesn't so my data is safe.

Well you could always reinstall the rt2870 driver from AUR:  https://wiki.archlin...ndex.php/Rt2870

That said, it looks like the driver should of been loaded automatically:

Quote

As of kernel 3.0, the rt2800usb driver automatically works with devices using the rt2870 chipset.

This is strange, even using the rtl8187 WiFi dongle, I can't get wireless to work.  I can't find it in my notes, but udev shoots an error during boot but it goes by to fast to read.  What is the file I can read that provides you with all boot messages so that you can read it once at the tty?

Either /var/log/dmesg.log or /var/log/everything.log as well as other logs located in /var/log. I would also check /var/log/kernel.log.

BTW You need to be root to read these logs.

Being busy with life, I had not had the chance to mess with the wifi issue on my laptop.  But I got up very early this morning and decided to tackle it.  I figured with no wifi working at all, I would just go ahead and work on getting the on board wifi working.  And yes, I am now up and running on wifi again.  Here is what I did to get it back.
My on board WiFi is broadband  BCM4318,
So I upgraded my b43 firmware by installing

- b43-firmware 5.100.138-2
- b43-fwcutter 015-1

I then loaded the b43 module
# modprobe b43

This finally brought wlan0 back when I performed ifconfig
# ifconfig
wlan0 IEEE 802.11bg ESSID:off/any
		  Mode:Managed Access Point: Not-Associated Tx-Power=off
		  Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
		  Power Management:off
When I ran iwconfig wlan0 up I got an RF-Kill error, still no Wifi,  so after doing more research I found another module that I needed to install:  ipw2200-fw

I then added both ipw2200 and b43 to my modules section of my rc.conf to autostart.
# HARDWARE
MODULES=(b43 ipw2200)

I then performed a reboot and alas, my WiFi was working.

On another note, I also got my WiFi led light to work as well by creating a conf file in my /etc/modprobe.d/wifi-led.conf  <------You can name this file anything you want as long as it ends in .conf
Add this line to this conf file:
options ipw2200 led=1

Hope this thread helps someone else.  ;)

Well that is odd considering the ipw module is for an Intel Pro Wireless card and the b43 module is for a Broadcom based wireless card. Now I am really confused :hmm:

I completely agree, but for some strange reason, that is how I got it to work? :hmm:

The strangest thing about all of this, is besides the video, my Arch Linux setup is exactly the same on my desktop as it is on my laptop.  I have had no issues with WiFi on the desktop even trying both the rtl8187 and rtl2870 Alpha WiFi dongles.  It is definitely a strange issue but somehow I got it to work.

Thanks Josh, but AFTER I make an image of the current partition with everything working, I am going to play around with this some more.  I'm with you, there is no reason that I can come up with why a Intel Pro Wireless module is going to effect a Broadband WiFi.  But even using that module in my wifi-led.conf file made the LED light work as well???  It could be that this particular module is coded such that it works on both??
