I get this error when attempting to start the app from the command line:

mousepad: error while loading shared libraries: libxfce4util.so.4: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

What now?

It seems mousepad was moved from the main repos: http://mailman.archl...une/020565.html

And in order to fix it, you must reinstall mousepad from the AUR repos to fix the issue. The problem was that xfce was upgraded but since mousepad was taken from the official repos, you have to rebuild mousepad-git (from AUR) to fix the issue. You need to reinstall mousepad (mousepad-git) to fix the issue due to new libraries in xfce 4.10.

Alrighty, then... Mousepad all better now. I also installed Leafpad in Arch and Slackware as a backup... just in case. Thanks again, folks. I was too aggravated to search for answers last night. I'm starting to get a bit peeved with all this breakage lately in Arch.

Well I would not call it breakage as mousepad was removed because it was also removed as utility from XFCE and replaced by Leafpad:

So yes, Arch implements changes rather quickly although you would of had the issue on any distro running XFCE when they updated XFCE. About 2-3 years from now, Debian will do the same thing

BTW What breakage are you referring to? Abarbarian's problem was due to a corrupted package probably from a bad mirror or something similar.

Well you were using an AUR package so I would not blame Archlinux but the package maintainer (either the package maintainer from AUR or ORacle).

jre7-openjdk is the official Arch package (in /extra), not jre7 since that one is proprietary (from Oracle).

This could very well of been an issue with Oracle as AUR packages are:

No, the problem was the AUR dev had the wrong link for the manually download. He fixed it pretty quickly, though.

Yeah, sorry I forgot about that

Either way you know what I mean, I was just trying to point out that problems with AUR packages are not always the fault of Archlinux.

Well, you're bound to have a break or two with all the updates that Arch makes available in just a week's time frame. That's the nature of a rolling release, though. You don't see breakage in Slackware like that because you only see one or two updates a month in Slack. And in Debian, even the updates are two years old.

Good point but honestly, I rarely have any breakage. Maybe I am just lucky or something

Mousepad-git refused to up date today so I posted at AUR and it was fixed in less than 2 hours  

Did you know that you can have a deep blue or black background to the program.

Very nice!! I did not know that you could choose the background but I do know that it will change depending on your gtk theme. Both leafpad and mousepad are darkgrey with white text on my machine:
