can you open "event viewer?"
this will test to see if mmc works ok on your pc.

rsvp

Is that something invoked from the Windows Run command? Or tell me how?

Better troubleshooting capabilities with Windows 7 Event Viewer - TechRepublic

Quote

the Windows 7 version of the Event Viewer has been completely rewritten with a new user interface that makes it much easier to filter and sort events as well as control which type of events are logged. In addition, you can now perform some basic diagnostic tasks right from within Event Viewer itself.
Microsoft has stated that they are going to impose stricter standards in order to ensure that events logged in Event Viewer are more meaningful, actionable, and well-documented, thus providing better information for troubleshooting. In addition, Windows 7’s Event Viewer will be the central point of inquiry for all the operating system’s logs. More specifically, those operating system components that store logging information in text files will add events to the event log in Windows 7.
Other new features in Event Viewer allow you to create and save custom views so that you can easily focus in on the problem you are currently troubleshooting, create event subscriptions that can collect information from other computers on a network, and allow you to more easily correlate problems that affect multiple computers and assign tasks that are to run when a certain event occurs.

Easiest way to invoke it is to use the Start box search box, and type in Event Viewer.

I've got it open---what do I look for & why is it pertinent to this case?

In the system logs, you may find your answer as to what happened and why that executable you need is not there.

I'm not sure how to use this as yet. I followed the link above with Recipester. How about this for a plan? 1.uninstall the Windows update which purportedly brings in the executable dsa.msc; then reinstall it & look in the system logs for that date & time? BTW, what would be the event number?

You can try that. Personally, I would follow Temmu's instructions.

I don't think it could hurt to try it though.

i have the admin tools running on my win 7 pro sp 1, 64 bit machine.  don't have a x86 version of win 7 pro to play with...
my domain runs on 2003.

i would start afresh.

1. determine what you are running
1.a. Start, [in search box type], winver - report findings.
1.b. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/827218 -  start [in search box type] system information - report findings under "system type"

2. determine if your os matches this - http://www.microsoft...lang=en&id=7887

3.  download what matches what was reported in 1.b, above. from http://www.microsoft...lang=en&id=7887

all things being right, it jsut installs and runs .

failing that - drop and add pc from/to domain:
computer properties, computer name, domain, and workgroup settings, change settings
drop from domain by selecting workgroup and enter any name
restart

computer properties, computer name, domain, and workgroup settings, change settings
rejoin domain
restart

i have seen the domain loose the pc's password - this is the quickest way to restore that trust relationship.
I tried dropping the domain, then reestablishing it....No change whatsoever.

I'm not sure how to MultiQuote, but I did follow Temmu's instructions as to dropping off the domain (I guess that's the instructions you meant?), but no change as to the availability  of the dsa.msc module. I feel awfully unsure of what/how the event viewer will reveal anything. I don't know what to look for & how it will help me solve the problem, so I feel unsure. .

dsa.msc should be in c:\windows\system32
running event viewer (as i said before) was to test if mmc was running or damaged and not running.

personally, i think you have a damaged win 7 install.

try another pc - sit at a co-workers desk logged on as yourself (i'm assuming you are a "domain admin")
and see if the install runs on that machine.

if you are not a "domain admin" there's precious little point in this exercise.
and by "domain admin" i mean that your "user name"  is a member of that "domain global security" group.

if you can figure a way for me to rdp to your pc, i can look.

Taking your comments in the order you presented them:
1. dsa.msc not in \windows\system32
2. We had a reinstall to a different hard disk on this machine a while back, but I have no other symptoms of anything wrong. BTW, on that hard disk, I did install Active Directory for Win 7 successfully, but I don't remember how I did it!
3. Other companions have either successfully installed this in Win 7 OR they have an XP version in a Virtual XP installed on their system
4. I have used my privileges in the past (I don't think anyone has removed them, for I'm still in the same department!) to: 1. add computers (including my own) to the domain. 2. Add qualified users to the domain with administrative privileges. 3.Our particular group has administrative privileges (without naming us specifically, but as "HelpDesk"). That is the limit: I can't add servers or printers to the system, So I don't think I would lose the above privileges without losing my job!
3. What's RDP???

1. ok...
2. creating a domain or adding another domain controller is done from a server, never a workstation.
3. sure, anyone with a microsoft windows domain from server 2003 and up can do that.  simple.
4. if you can add workstations, you can add servers and printers. (unless some domain admin got overly creative.)
5. RDP - it's a protocol - http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc908 and http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc1151 and microsoft's slant http://support.microsoft.com/kb/186607

friend, you should get your network admin to give you a hand.
or, you could fly me out to your site... but i don't think u can afford me...

many apologies.

after you try loading on another machine, (and it must be loaded before you attempt this, otherwise these features will not be there to choose.)

go to control panel, programs.
on the left, "turn windows features on or off"

expand "remote server administration tools"

expand "feature administration tools"

select at least:

group policy management tools

smpt server tools

storage explorer tools

expand "role administration tools"

select "role administration tools"

de-select hyper-v tools if you don't use it

Thanks for sticking with me sir, when others have obviously given up on me.
As to # 1 on my list---no dsa.msc---I loaded it from another machine of a friend. Then I tried it: Active Directory came up; UAC wanted me to give permission to MMC; "MMC could not create the snapin".
2. Didn't understand your answer to # 2.
3. That's the way it is in our domain. I cannot help users in my own subgroup, change theri passwords, etc.
4. I'd be willing to try RDP, but I'm not sure you can get past our firewall.

I'm sorry sir for not replying earlier. ALL is OK, due to me using The Control Panel to OK all RSAT services. I now have ADUC on my machine.Does anything remain for closing/ending this topic?
