both idc and gartner agree, win 8's not going to go anywhere with we, the desktop (laptop) pc users.  (computerworld, dec 19, pg 5, "pc users unlikely to embrace windows 8"

hmm... me thinks we predicted that...
my opinion: there seems to be nothing of value coming from win 8 ... apparently not even the promised journaling file system that should have been with vista, then 7.
there was clear reason to go from vista to 7 - speed!  better user interface.  

win 8 may be ms's biggest non-event since, um windows 1 or windows m.e.

anyone here itching for 8? rsvp!

Windows 8 reminds me of Windows Embedded.  

Interesting to note that  Windows 8 Developer Preview is NT 6 build:
6.0.6000 = Vista SP0
6.0.6001 = Vista SP1
6.0.6002 = Vista SP2
6.1.7600 = Windows 7 SP0
6.1.7601  = Windows 7 SP1
6.2.8102 = Windows 8 Developer Preview

It's too early for me to say YEA or NAY to Windows 8 replacing Windows 7 on systems here, all of which were originally Vista OEM.

jc, an mvp!  sorry, i just now saw that.

our work did not replace xp with vista.  actually, we pleaded with our vendor to ship us xp machines.
with 2/3 of our machines still xp, and the others (new machines) only on 7 for a year now,
it would be a bad move to go to 8.  way too soon.

If anyone one of us had made a decision on a desktop operating system based solely on the previews of a developer's build, I doubt few people would be using Windows.  Without a doubt, I think you're jumping the gun; it's not even in beta phase.  Windows 8 has a quite a ways to go before it's "final".  As for the new Metro interface, they say you can turn all of that off and go back to the typical Windows Explorer look you're used to seeing.

I just read about "Storage Spaces" in Windows 8. The concept is similar to Linux LVM and was actually in Windows Home Server 2008 but was removed in WHS 2010. Apparently the code is a complete re-write of that in WHS. This looks like a cool feature for desktop PC users.

so has anyone here used Win8 on a desktop screen > 20" for a couple days?
I am wondering how the Metro interface works out on a large screen for an extended period of time. It seems to me that the color and scheme would wear thin in a couple of days in a  large form factor.

Didn't someone from Microsoft (I think it was Mark Russinovich or Steve Sinofsky) announce some time during the pre-Windows 7-timeframe that they were not going to rev the major build number as they had with previous releases as it broke some enterprise customers' LOB apps?
