The company will now “contribute webOS to open source license” — another way of saying that the code will be available under open source license. HP’s role will be an active one as it continues to contribute development, engineering and support resources.

Next steps include engaging with the open-source community to define the WebOS open source charter and develop a plan for how that will be governed. It will likely run under an Apache-style license.

What does this mean for current TouchPad and Pre owners? Sources tell Mashable that they can expect to receive software updates in the future. In fact, one source told us that this move will accelerate platform and ecosystem development, benefiting current and future users..........

"Do you begin to see, then, what kind of world we are creating? It is the exact opposite of the stupid hedonistic Utopias that the old reformers imagined. A world of fear and treachery and torment, a world of trampling and being trampled upon, a world which will grow not less but more merciless as it refines itself. Progress in our world will be progress toward more pain." -George Orwell, 1984

hmm.gif so is the refurbished TouchPad for $100 worth a shot now?

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. ~C. S. Lewis

Trust me, it is an excellent tablet even before today's news. I have had my 32gb model for about a month and I love it. I have it set up to dual Android and WebOS but I mainly stay in Android. That said, I think that WebOS has a lot of potential even more so with today's announcement. Also, the battery life is excellent. Even with overclocking (1.8ghz max), I still get almost 48 hours of moderate use out of the battery on webOS and about 30 hours on Android.

A HUGE corporation that actually gets it. The best possible solution to the WebOS dilemma. The entire WebOS Homebrew community is going nuts.

Thank You, HP! thumbsup.gif

HP's eBay store will have refurbs available starting Sunday December 11th at 6 PM Central time. 2 per customer limit.

16 GB models will be $99
32 GB models will be $149
Accessory bundles will be available at big discounts.

If I had any money I'd buy two. This is a great device, and WebOS is a great system to build upon.

At about 4:10pm Pacific time it changed to $149. Odd. Is this the normal way eBay Stores does sales?

Yes because there was a set time that HP wanted the sale to proceed. The price you seen earlier was the pre-sale price.
