I haven't finished reading this, but I noticed that one thing you did was explain how to make free space on a drive where other installations already live. The beginner's guide assumes that you will devote the whole computer to Arch, and I found the terminology in the setup -- "free space" -- a bit vague and backed out of the install. So that is a useful improvement right there.

"Do you begin to see, then, what kind of world we are creating? It is the exact opposite of the stupid hedonistic Utopias that the old reformers imagined. A world of fear and treachery and torment, a world of trampling and being trampled upon, a world which will grow not less but more merciless as it refines itself. Progress in our world will be progress toward more pain." -George Orwell, 1984

Archlinux users here is a nice tip:You can get an list of you install package by doing as regular user:
pacman -Qet | awk '{print $1}' > installed_packages.txt
and then you can reinstall everything using the installed_packages.txt file as root:
# pacman -Sy `cat installed_packages.txt`

pacman -Qet | awk '{print $1}' > installed_packages.txt doesn't seem to work for me.

Hmm odd   It should work just fine. Awk is installed by default and the rest is just pacman switches. You sure it did not work?Note it does no show any output, it just makes a text file called installed_packages.txt.

And there is no file named installed_packages.txt?Are you in the correct directory?
 pwd
It sounds as though it worked. Type ls after the command finishes.

@ Sue depends on what directory your console is in. You should not have to be root for this work but heck try it as root?@Urmas  The file is called installed_packages.txt

I just tried whereis and locate...there is no file called installed_packages.txt anywhere. Oh, and that command doesn't work as root either, at least not for me.

NOTE: Since Josh's original post is a tutorial which is linked to in the Standard Tutorials area of Bruno's Classroom, I've gone ahead and split off the discussion posts and made a new thread out of them. Josh, if there is pertinent information in any of these posts, please add the info as addenda to the original tutorial, also. Thanks! ~Eric
